Fired Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Director James Gunn Defended By Hellboy Star Selma Blair

"You have shown strength of character more than most anyone I know."

On Friday, it was reported that director James Gunn had been fired from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney following the resurfacing of tweets he made several years ago. Gunn's departure led to a swift response from his Guardians star Dave Bautista, and Bautista has now been joined by actress Selma Blair, who has tweeted a passionate defence of Gunn. [Update: The wider Guardians cast has voiced their support for Gunn.]

Blair, who is best known for movies such as Hellboy and Legally Blonde, wrote to Gunn on Twitter, thanking him for his friendship and for his support in her decision to speak out about the abuse she alleges against disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.

Now Playing: Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Director James Gunn Fired - GameSpot Universe News Update

"I thank you for your talent, your decency, and your evolution as a man," she wrote. "You propped me up when I was in a scary place, and guided me towards the decent and right thing to do. You have shown strength of character more than most anyone I know. You understood."

Blair followed this with a second tweet, in which she linked to a Change.org petition asking Disney to rehire Gunn. She added: "Because if people are punished despite changing, then what does that teach people about owning mistakes and evolving? This man is one of the good ones."

Guardians lead actors Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana also responded to Gunn's dismissal from Vol. 3, but in far vaguer terms. Saldana stated it had been a "a challenging weekend," and that she was "pausing myself to take everything in before I speak out of term." Pratt, meanwhile, simply tweeted a Biblical quote.

The tweets that led to Gunn's dismissal date back almost a decade, and saw the director joking about topics like pedophilia and rape. They resurfaced online via conservative website The Daily Caller, and Disney was quick to sever ties with him. In a statement, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said, "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."

Gunn offered a subsequent statement in which he took responsibility for the tweets and accepted Disney's decision. "My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative," his statement read. "I have regretted them for many years since--not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.

"Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse."

The news emerged in the midst of San Diego Comic-Con 2018, where Marvel was not expected to have any major announcements. Gunn himself was set to appear at SDCC on Friday during the Sony Pictures panel to promote a new project, but Sony subsequently pulled this announcement from its schedule.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had been set for release in 2020, though Gunn's removal could affect that. The events of Avengers: Infinity War stand to have a potential impact on the film, though Avengers 4--due out next year--could always make further changes. Without saying how, Gunn had previously teased that Guardians 3 would be "very different."

No crimes committed. He's not being charged with anything. Alright.

But most jobs don't require crimes to be committed for anyone to be fired -- and Disney had valid concerns: why would a business whose primary market is children continue to employ anyone who has become known for jokes about sexually abusing children?

They decided that the negatives associated with his alleged decade-old Twitter "humor" outweigh the positives of his worth as an employee. So they cut him. Boo-hoo.

However, I am for Disney re-hiring him. Not because his tweets were written years ago, not because he hadn't committed any actual crimes, and not because I'm a fan of anything he's ever done. (Haven't even watched anything he's ever been involved with, AFAIK.)

I'm just for Disney re-hiring him because I don't actually like Disney very much, and would look forward to them getting as much flak for re-hiring him as they've been getting for letting him go.

Can't say it any better than she did. Gunn didn't abuse anyone or commit a hate crime, he made some shock tweets back when his job was shock value. He didn't deny it or hide from it - he left the tweets, after all. He admitted it was stupid, he was just going for shock value back then, apologized for it, and assured everyone he grew up and realized it was time to be a better person. Everyone around him has vouched for him - past and present.

To drag a guy through the mud after he admitted his past mistakes and acts as a decent, selfless human being is counter to what we teach our kids. He owned up to his classless shock schtick from back in the day, apologized profusely, and has been a positive guy since the tweets in question with the support of a ton of peers and coworkers. Ending his career over it is an overreaction, to say the least.

I'm beyond tired of everyone just instantly blaming the "SJW's" on every little thing, without even knowing the facts.

And to those who claim that freedom of speech is dead, you are totally wrong. You have the right to say whatever you want. However, you do need to be prepared to own your comments, (and the consequences), if it's inflammatory, off color or illegal.

This is foreshadowing what happens in a society that doesn't understand social media and repercussions for your mouth.

This internet doesn't forget. A fact that many young people drinking today (or with less than acceptable points of view) could learn from if they want to succeed later in life.

@rmiller365: There should not be a world in which you express your personal opinions, obviously within reason and it affects your professional life. Me personally i don't support a lot of the gay laws and whatnot that happen nowadays, but i dont hate gay people, but yet i've been called a bigot or hatemonger for my views, why? Am i not allowed to have an opinion and let it be known without fear of repercussion just as those who are gay and support gay rights? Why is the same right not afforded me?

@khadafi: Lots of things happen in this world that are unfair. Like others have said, Everyone is free to express their opinions as long as they do not intervene on the rights of others. The concept is lost on some. An opinion on a restaurant or religious view is all good until your view tries to prevent others freedom (Example:you cant get married because I dont like it!)

But My point is is that ALLLLLL your opinions are now permanently documented on the internet so If If its something that you feel that strongly about by all means take a stand on it. Just be prepared to maybe NOT get that job you interviewed for or that Promotion you didn't get because others dont share your point of view.

I read the tweets, and while some are just "dafuq?" inducing, none of them really make me think he's some child predator that's hiding in the bushes waiting to pounce on any child that crosses his path.

He was just some guy with a twisted ass sense of humor that was obviously taken better 10 years ago (as evidenced by the fact that no one made this much of a shit storm about it). But in today's world...everyone is offended by f'n everything, and will take any and all opportunities to drag someone down and make them a monster in some form or another.

And just some food for thought, it took 10 YEARS to find something of this nature from Gunn, ten freaking years. I mean, I say stupid shit every 10 minutes. So to me, it shows an obvious change in the man's mentality and what he says.

I'm also convinced that the popularity of Guardians wouldn't be what it was without his direction. I mean, just take a look at some of the other garbage from Disney recently. *coughStarWarscough*

@R34Vegeta: It's not really about the tweets. I find it hard to believe Disney didn't already know this about him. These people do their research. More likely there is a clause in Gunn's contract that awards him some form of significant revenue sharing if he directs a third movie and Disney wanted an out. Or maybe they don't like the direction he has in mind for the third movie, but the clause prevents them from firing him without a good reason.

@Barighm: The optimist in me is saying "Disney wouldn't do that!" ....then the realist/pessimist kills the optimist, stuffs its body in a dumpster and walks away, and then I think "Yeah...yeah they probably would."

I wonder who cared enough for those old tweets clearly intended as crude bad quality humor to make the head of gunn fall and spin. Hope it wasn't a SJW nutjob.

@santinegrete: the person Who dug up Gunn's old tweets is actually a nutjob who once made a tweet about how date rape isn't a real thing and the only way you can have sex with a women is to force it in.

@CallMeDuraSouka: So that guy is an actual rapist for telling a crude rape joke, but James Gunn isn't an actual pedophile for telling crude pedophile jokes? You're gonna have to explain that one to me.

@santinegrete: It wasn’t what you’d call a SJW, don’t jump to conclusions. It was the opposite. Major far-right conervative propaganda machine. I;ve read speculation that it was done to punish Gunn for anti-Trumo statements but I’ve not found proof of thus.

The fact that he is being punished for words from a decade ago. Words that were intended to be humor. He didn't say "let's go rape <insert persons name here>". Were the jokes crude and in bad taste, sure. But that same humor doesn't stop Disney from allowing deadpool comics to be printed.

And once this purchase of fox goes through, are they are going to fire all the actors and writers from the deadpool movies for the jokes they wrote and said?

Also one thing I've seen mentioned a few times is how gunn was around 40 when he made those tweets and should have known better. If you think a 40 yr old doesn't still make mistakes and learn and grow, that only shows a lack of experience and wisdom on your own part.

Also the tweets were made in what, 2008? Twitter only became released to the public in 2006. Did anyone really think Twitter would be what it is today? And is it really fair to hold this against someone who was coming into a brand new age of media. I think some people seem to think social media has been around forever and just think that everyone knew then what we know now.

And if you sit here and say you have never made a mistake or posted something dumb on social media you are either a liar or have never lived.

@darthbluntsaber:

BS. Did you even read his tweets? The guy was opening joking about pedophilia. His tweets were about little boys touching him, kids peeing on him, and incest. The guy should raided and everything he has should be looked at. Comparing this to deadpool is ridiculous. Deadpool is a fictional movie locked behind an R rating, his guy was in public view saying it for kicks to anyone that would listen.

Disney is in the right here.

Those below saying the past is in the past... this guys thoughts haven't changed in 10 years. It takes a sick person to even think of this stuff. This guy is just as deranged now as he was 10 years ago.

It's sickening this is being defended by anyone. People need to learn free speech doesn't mean "I can publicly say anything i want without repercussions!".

@Bossdog421: Did you even read what you said, he clearly chose carefully how to "joke" about it, all I can read from your comments is that what little boys would do to him aka reverse incest or basically shotacon stuff. There was no indication of him doing anything, that only he would be in the receiving end. Also it was just a fucking tasteless joke that he made 10 years ago. Get a life and mind your own life before deciding what type of jokes someone can make, it's kinda late to whine about it, like a decade late. Stop being a douche and be a human.
