Nintendo's next generation games system is codenamed NX, the company's chief executive Satoru Iwata has revealed.

Iwata said that the hardware project represents a "brand-new concept", but didn't elaborate further. The announcement came moments after Nintendo revealed plans to bring its household games and IP to mobiles and smartphones.

Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday, Iwata explained: "As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX'. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."

It is not clear whether the new hardware represents new strides in the handheld or home console business.

However, the new platform appears to be developed in unison with a new membership (or perhaps subscription) service that will unite Nintendo's home consoles, its handhelds, as well as mobiles and PC.

Iwata clarified that this new membership service will "encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs."

He added: "Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses."

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that it would be closing its Club Nintendo membership program by September. The loyalty program launched in 2007 and supplied free gifts to owners of the Nintendo DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. At the time the company claimed it was "working hard to create a new program." It appears this new membership service will be its replacement.

wonder if this is going to be their PS now, or amazon fire, roku etc... play 3ds games with subscription to your tv. :/ if theyre not intended to compete with consoles, and theyre not trying to do away with the wiiu, and they want it to compliment all systems... then a remote play or streaming device would fit that category. gah

<< LINK REMOVED >> If VR really is a feature, I'd expect it to cost at least $300. I'd buy it ASAP. However, I doubt that a handheld could possibly be able to use VR on its own. The unison between it and other devices though, it might create a catalyst that will allow a form of VR to take place. It's interesting to think about for sure.

the wiiU hasn't been out for that long has it? I barely use mine, just waiting for Zelda and the occasional Mario game. That's all i use any Nintendo system for. The other games just don't interest me or come out on ps4 as well. Same as my xb1. My Call of Duty Limited Edition came with COD (the Kevin Spacy one) and I bought halo master chief collection. I'll play Fable when It comes out as well but that's it. I just got the COD edition XB1 cause it looked cool.

the wii was there best selling system of all time a lot more than fan boys purchased that system numbers don't lie playstation 3 88 million units sold xbox 360 88 million units sold wii 140 million units sold also the big n has always made money on there systems when the ps3 came out they were selling them at a 300 dollar loss per system the 360 sold at about 87 dollar loss per system. I'm a sony fan boy and even i know this

<< LINK REMOVED >> The Wii sold just over 100 million units, it's behind the DS and original Gameboy in terms of highest selling Nintendo game systems. The Wii sold like it did because it was the right product at the right time in capturing the attention of the mainstream, casual market and was basically a fad. But yes, Nintendo has always played it safe with their consoles and not taking an upfront risk with the loss leader approach.

Sony screwed up big time last generation.

Nintendo 3DS - Nintendo is currently winning. (not counting mobile phones)

So yeah. Handhelds will be Nintendo's for a while.

I just bought the NEW 3DS XL and I am happy, like, bought the right car happy because I waited. I am a fan of Nintendo but before buying the new 3DS I was not impress by their last 3 console. what nintendo has going great is their games and their seal of quality that 70%+ of the developer market should learn from. I am hoping this next installment will bring me and others back to lovely moments the company gave me and my friends on the Nin64.

The nx won't be out for years, and the main appeal games of the wii u are the ones from the past 9 months and the ones coming out this year and next year, and likely more to come as well. I'd recommend getting a Wii U now instead of sitting around waiting 3 to 4 years for the nx, and playing games like the upcoming Starfox, Zelda 2016, Super Mario 3d World, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Zelda Windwaker HD, etc

The gamecube and wii u were simply bad ideas and badly executed, that's all there is to it. But systems like the 3ds/ds/wii prove that nintendo is more than a capable company.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The gamecube was an excellent system that was simply unfortunate to go up against the first xbox ever (and more importantly, Halo, arguably the best shooter of all time) and the most sold console ever the PS2. It held more than its fair share of amazing games from all corners of the Nintendo franchise universe, it just didn't blow the competition out of the water like the Wii did.

The NES, SNES and N64 really only had SEGA as competition (with sony poking in with the PS1). But the gamecube went up against the beginning of the microsoft consoles and the peak of the sony consoles. It's hard to compete with both of those at the same time and put out numbers that the Wii did. The ps3 and 360 were ok, but the Wii was simply a better console and microsoft and sony weren't able to ride off of their previous console or premier franchises hard enough to beat it.

You do realize that Sony doesn't make much of a profit from the ps4. and the little profit it does make is to pay the debt. Where Nintendo has zero debt and a cash surplus. Sony wont be around in 15 years. but Nintendo will. Sony TV's are extinct and so are the Sony Vaio.

Its almost like ppl ignore the obvious for the sheer fact that they hate sony/microsoft. grow the **** up yo seriously. its just a console its not like sony is gonna come to your house and force you to use any of their shit.

BTW: Sony and microsft arent going anywhere, hell even nintendo needed to look for an outlet for their games because the wiiu sales are failing horribly. by selling nintendo games on mobile soon. do some research before you start bashing. Nintendo is doing so bad they cut their uppermanagement and are selling their games on someone elses medium, something tells me and anyone else with any sort of buisness sense nintendo is very and i mean VERY scared.
