First Footage of Valkyria: Azure Revolution Airs Online

Action-RPG gameplay replaces series' turn-based mechanics.

A gameplay video providing a first look of Sega's Valkyria: Azure Revolution has made its way online. The demo, which is included with the Japanese release of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, was streamed by Twitch user Hamachin and archived on YouTube by AllGamesBeta. Watch it below.

The 40-minute video offers an overview of battle, focusing on both close quarters hand-to-hand attacking and taking out enemies from a long range. There's also a boss battle with a mech towards the end.

As previously announced, Valkyria: Azure Revolution is in development at Media Vision, the team behind Valkyria Chronicles 3 for PSP. Based on the video, it seems the studio has decided to move the series away from its turn-based roots and create an action-RPG instead.

The game is set in a world where the Rus Empire has rapidly expanded thanks to an industrial revolution. This was instigated by the discovery of a mineral called Ragnite.

As of yet, Valkyria: Azure Revolution has not been announced for North America, Europe, or any other western territories.

Very sad sight seeing the Valkyrie Chronicles series turning into a action rpg instead of continuing 1-3 turn base strategy - my favorite genre.

Still, I do enjoy the universe that VC is in, and dearly pray it comes out with a good story. SRPGs, allow for such great storytelling.

When I saw the princess in the frock throw a grenade, I laughed hard - that was such a preposterously amusing sight. XD

Also, she has terrible pathfinding, as can be seen in this moment of the video.

Having seen the video, I think that the gameplay is actually closer to Dragon Age II and Inquisition - which is not exactly a good thing either.

When I noticed that a player character can hit more than one enemy with a swing of a blade but can only shoot at one target at a time with his/her gun, I have the impression that the gameplay might have some issues of disparity between its individual elements. Specifically, in this case, why bother having a shoot-out when cutting up fools is more efficient? It seems like any shoot-outs to be had are only there to set up "Good Situations" before jumping into melee combat.

It's just like a Musou game. :/

What irks me more is those YouTubers who are defending the game and how different it is from the previous ones. It's a spin-off, they say. Well, it's still a bad direction for the series if a spin-off focuses more on second-to-second action instead of planning and positioning.

UPDATE: I take back what I said about the game being a Musou game. It's not entirely about running in and cutting up dudes.

I still don't know what to think. I don't like the turn-based gameplay going away, but I was alright with the Final Fantasy games straying from its classic gameplay.

The combat reminds me a bit of Rogue Galaxy.... could be fun. I feel bad for all the fans that were hoping for a turn based strategy sequel though.

Are you fucking shitting me...... What a shame, either they have taken a generic action shooter rpg and decided to skin it- poorly- with Valkyrie Chronicles to make a quick buck or they have lost their friggin minds -Sadly no matter what has happened that pushed them to this decision .. we all lose.

This constant push toward everything fps or bro games is a joke.

Gameplay looks really awkward. But there will be a feedback questionaire for people who played first demo followed by a 2nd demo later on, just like episode duscae.

Wow WTF.. that looks terrible. It's like they've put zero budget into the combat and just made it a shallow button masher.

Disappointing, why do AAA developers (especially Japanese) think no one wants to play turn based games anymore? I'm tired of the excuse "now that we have the processing power we can make the games people really want to play" instead of charming or original gameplay, all we get now are action games and shooters or a blend of both!

@fanboyman: You'll have to look to indie/crowdfunded games for your turn based fix now.

@indojimbo: I agree, I'm hoping I'm stuck in a dream world and I'll soon wake up. Since they're still in development hopefully SEGA will read what's being said around the web and realize that they are going to alienate and destroy or dwindle their fan base of Valkyria Chronicles if they release the game like this. I played the PS3 version of VC1 and will be buying the PS4 remastered version of VC1 for that turn-based style of game play as well as the pace of that style of game play. As others have said, this looks to be more of a button masher ARPG rather than any kind of strategy turn-based hybrid game like VC1 for the PS3 was. If they do in fact release it this way (as shown in this video) I for one won't be buying it. Sorry SEGA, ya blew it with an ARPG.

Yeah.... That looks bad. Nothing about the combat looks fun. I was disappointed that they went away from the turn based tactic combat, but I at least hoped it was for something good. This doesn't justify the change.

Sure, they will lose a few sales, including mine. But they will gain new great hordes of dumb mmo-addicted button-mashing clickfest experts, there are a whole bloody lot more of them than us.

@Orontes13: I agree but that market seems saturated, there's a lot of competition, Sega would be wise to stick with a niche audience.

@fanboyman: Hell, with the shear number of sales on the ps3 in USA and Japan, as well as on steam their niche audience made them a ton of money, now someone decided to flush it down the toilet.

Crying is all I see in the comments. I wish gamers would stfu and reserve judgement for when a game actually releases.

But no go ahead and cry about something you literally just laid your eyes on 10 seconds ago.

Morons.

@Rushaoz: How would you feel if they took one of your favorite game series and then just decided the long awaited sequel was a completely different genre and they removed everything you loved about the game other than the look and title? That's how most people in the comments feel right now.

It may end up being a good game in the end but most are wondering why this is even titled as a Valkyria game other than to get sales from past fans.

@bacontophat45: For the record I think change is good for sequels, you don't want to play the same game but with just a different number slapped on to it, however I expected a GOOD change, this move to the action RPG style of game play is just another game that saturates the already bland library of current gen JRPGs, again I fail to understand why Japanese developers decided that action RPG is the way to go and that tactical or turn based RPGs are something to be shunned, I mean if they were gonna make it action the least they could have done is make it GOOD, this is just basically "navigate to one area" "mash attack button to kill enemy" "repeat".

@Dark_sageX: I completely agree. Change is good in in moderation. Making adjustments and changing how stuff works and expanding/ adding features can be good. Changing the genre and focus of the game is almost always bad.

@bacontophat45: To be frank, I was a little pissed when they moved the series from PS3 to PSP (especially since I don't believe they released the third game in NA). Hell, a lot of people were pissed with what they did with VC2 (focusing on a military academia with younger characters as opposed).

@bacontophat45: I understand how you feel and have actually been through it. (Final Fantasy everyone? The change from X- XII was massive) I'm not saying people shouldn't be concerned, what I'm saying is they should lay off and reserve judgement because they have no idea how the game is actually going to turn out. I was very concerned with classic turn base combat being changed from what it was in FFX to what it was in FFXII but in the end guess what? I absolutely ADORED FFXII and it turned out to be one of my favorites in the series. I'm just saying people get their panties all bunched up too fast and and too early. Settle down, have a cup of coffee and just wait for the final product to be released and make your judgement then.

@Rushaoz: I see what you mean there but this is a bit different. Final Fantasy is a series that's loved because of the stories and adventures it brings you on. The combat is important but comes second the everything else so even though FF12 was such a big change mechanic wise it still had the adventure and charm of the old games and that's why many fans loved it anyways.

Valkyria is the opposite though the love and charm was almost completely on the battle mechanics. It had a unique and fun SRPG battle mechanics that was challenging at times and made you think about your moves. It had a cute story that tied it together but it wasn't most peoples main focus. Remove the combat and you remove most peoples reason to play it.

Even if the new one ends up great it will be played for a completely different reason than being a Valkyria game and most of the fan base will likely be different.

@ArchoNils2: @bluefox755: Yeap. I played the first game, and I do agree that all the cunning player needs is upgraded Scouts to rush over to and capture camps, maybe Shocktroopers to go up tougher paths and Snipers to pop the heads of enemy officers in the first turn or second.

The other classes and especially the tanks are so hopelessly useless, because they can't cover ground quickly and can't reach enemies early on to eliminate before they can pose any trouble.

There are many other shortfalls that the sequels do not appear to address. Consequently, I don't think that the series is "deep and strategic". I have played more sophisticated turn-based tactical titles.

Goddamn it! I was really looking forward to VC 4 or at least a AAA version of VC 2 and 3 but nope they're going to take a series known for it's unique turn based/ shooting/ rpg hybrid gameplay and F$king change the very thing thatmakes it unique. Now it looks like a generic JRPG as if there aren't enough of those in the market.

Well my hype has gone down significantly, graphics and animations look so basic and bland and from a game play perspective looks like to be a button masher of some kind with (from what it looks like to be) lack of strategy.
