Following Bethesda Acquisition, Xbox Is Primed To Reclaim Its Identity As A Console For RPGs

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media is official, meaning we could see a lot more RPGs launch for Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass.

Now that ZeniMax Media is officially owned by Microsoft, Xbox is welcoming eight game studios, including Bethesda, into its family of first-party developers. It's a move that feels in-line with everything that Xbox has been doing since 2018, as Xbox slowly reclaims its old identity as the home for western role-playing games (RPGs), a role that it hasn't held since the days of the original Xbox and Xbox 360.

Back then, the Xbox brand was known for being the place to play console ports of western RPGs, a genre that traditionally had only released on PC and hadn't fully been embraced by Nintendo or PlayStation yet. This association between Xbox and RPGs was lost with the Xbox One generation of consoles, but thanks to the many acquisitions that Microsoft has made, it may be one that we see again with Xbox Series X|S. That association will only help Microsoft in this console generation, both in moving Xbox Series X|S units and selling Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions.

Now Playing: Bethesda - Official “Here’s to the Journey” Video

In June 2018, Microsoft acquired Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, which is now working on a brand-new Fable. Later, in November 2018, Microsoft announced it had acquired Wasteland developer inXile Entertainment, following up that it also acquired Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment. Both studios are also working on upcoming RPG projects for Xbox; inXile is still a ways from announcing its game while Obsidian has revealed its developing an "epic, first-person RPG" called Avowed.

Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media adds Bethesda Games Studios to its rapidly growing list of first-party Xbox Game Studios. And though it's still up in the air as to whether or not Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI will release as Xbox Series X|S console exclusives, both are at least coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. In fact, all of the aforementioned RPGs are scheduled to come to Xbox Game Pass on day one, given that they're first-party titles.

The total reach that Microsoft has over prominent western RPG developers can technically be extended to include BioWare as well. BioWare's publisher is Electronic Arts, and EA's games appear on EA Play at a discount (and sometimes early) for subscribers. EA Play is now bundled into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at no additional cost, adding a ton of RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Inquisition to the evolving service. At this point, the only major western RPG developer that Microsoft doesn't have an official partnership with is CD Projekt Red. But if we're willing to put on our tinfoil hats and theorize for a moment, there does seem to be some sort of connection between the two that maybe could become an official partnership. CD Projekt Red's The Witcher series first came to consoles through Xbox (The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on Xbox 360), and the developer has participated in Microsoft's press conference for both E3 2018 and E3 2019 in order to advertise Cyberpunk 2077. Maybe Cyberpunk 2077's poor reception at launch has sullied that relationship between CD Projekt Red and Xbox, but it still makes you think.

Even ignoring that intriguing possibility though, Microsoft's recent acquisitions will allow Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to access some of the most prominent upcoming RPGs for less than their total retail cost. And with game prices seemingly set to rise--Sony is already selling a few of the PS5's games at a higher retail cost than what most PS4 games are priced--the savings on a per game basis could be significant.

I don't think this is going to have any bearing on the first year of the Xbox Series X|S lifecycle--hell, I'm not even convinced we'll see the impact within two years. But provided these games are well-received, I could see Xbox being regarded as the console to choose if you're a fan of RPGs, especially those made in the west. Sure, RPGs are still going to appear on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, but I assume both consoles are going to continue dominating the Japanese space.

This gives Xbox something that it has long since lacked in terms of its first-party exclusives: an identity. Everyone knows you go to PlayStation for those single-player, blockbuster movie-like experiences, while Nintendo prioritizes making enjoyable complexity out of simple mechanics. Through Playground, inXile, Obsidian, Bethesda, and, in some part, EA and BioWare, I think Xbox can establish itself as a platform for different types of role-playing games. If your favorite thing to do in a video game is create a character and then live their life, it's looking like Xbox is where a lot of the biggest names in the business are going to be.

And creating a space where RPGs thrive is only going to attract more of them. It's a position that has worked for Xbox in the past--you had to own an Xbox or Xbox 360 in order to play Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (for a year--it eventually made its way to PS3), both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (for a period of time), Deus Ex: Invisible War, The Witcher 2, and the Fable trilogy on consoles. The Xbox and Xbox 360 made it possible to play a type of game that was previously exclusively made for PC, and Microsoft can do the same now with Xbox Series X|S and the studios it's acquired.

The fact that all of these RPG studios are making games that will be available via Xbox Game Pass is a huge boon for Microsoft. Xbox Game Pass already has a fairly impressive line-up of games for its price--there's a reason we've repeatedly called it the best deal in gaming--but it doesn't change that a lot of the best first-party studio games on the service (Sea of Thieves, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, State of Decay 2, Gears 5) are game-as-a-service titles or multiplayer-focused games with relatively short single-player campaigns. Getting a few over-40-hour RPGs increases the overall value of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, both in terms of just giving you more actual game to play for the same relatively cheap monthly subscription fee, and in fulfilling a market that is currently a bit lacking on the service.

Of course, acquiring ZeniMax Media does include studios and genres beyond Bethesda Game Studios and RPGs, but I think it's Bethesda's prominence in the genre that will help move Xbox Series X|S units during the platform's lifecycle, especially when Microsoft's other RPG-focused studios are taken into account. We'll have to wait and see how all of these upcoming games turn out, but I for one would welcome the return of the association between "Xbox" and "role-playing games."

@Pupchu: That is not true, xbox and xbox 360 was out of the gate one of the best places to play incredible WRPGs, JRPGs, and CRPGs. Like KOTOR, Jade, Silver, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, FAble, Eternal Sanata, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Morrowind 3 and Oblivion, Fallouts.

Yes, the ps2 and ps3 eventually got those games and also they had way more rpgs but at least Xbox was selling to a wider audience then just FPS and bro games.

@Pupchu: Okay, xbox did not have a single genre reputation, but literally NO console or platform wants a reputation as a single genre console. Xbox was known for always pushoing a diverse, interesting library of games until the .... 8th gen and part of late 7th gen when Don Mattrick openly predicated that consoles would die and that social games like Farmville and phone games would exist, with console surviving on motion controlled games.

Xbox definitely was a console for RPGs and diverse games across the board. This is why so many are excited that MS is making strong moves into publishers with a diverse lineup. Moving away from a monotone library of games. And in my circle and the many many gamers that owned an xbox or xbox 360, if you wanted some of best and most exciting RPGs of the day... xbox reputation preceded them.

@Mkherkzen: They did during late 7th and all of 8th gen, and that is why the fell so hard. And sold so many fewer consoles then the xbox 360, including emerging markets, and big markets like the EU. It has always been about the games, and you want more then just the fps and bro games.

Yes at one time XBOX had the must have RPGs.

But yeah now the xbox library is kind of like Han Solo's- quote

A magical power holding together good and evil, the dark side and the light? Crazy thing is, it's true. The RPG, the JRPG on xbox — all of it. .......... It's all true.”

They are primed to take over the world with that purchase lol. It stopped me bothering with a PS5 at launch anyway. I'd rather put the money into Xbox and Gamepass for the forseeable future.

I've owned but consoles and can say this Xbox fans are wishful thinking too assume that popular titles like fallout will become Xbox only due to them buying the gaming company. Microsoft is in it to make money they are not going to throw away 6+figure profits just to stick it to ps fans. Lol there is a reason that most top tier games don't have exclusivity anymore in fact the trend has been moving away from permanent exclusivity because games cost too much to make and its down right stupid to limit your revenue. Yes there will be exclusive games in the future for Xbox. But major titles like fallout and elder scrolls that have huge following on all consoles will most likely stay in all those consoles. The only change will be that they will hit Xbox first .

@talos48: I kinda agree. Take SquareEnix, that Sony has bought nearly 40% of its stock over 2 decades. SQE is killing it, as well as Atlus, which Sony owns shares in. After a game has saturated the market - your platform- might as well release it later on, or with lesser features, or if your like (Sony v xbox) more then twice the hardware sold, then a simul-release. Go ahead and release it on other platforms as it will increase your sales, when you expose other people to your game and then have it timed exclusive on your platform. Win win.

Also do not forget ... that since that corp owns shares with that publisher, they are also making money even if sold on another platform/console.

@talos48: that does seem like the most likely scenario, specially for already announced titles like Elder Scrolls 6...

But it does depend on how big PS5 market share is, vs Xbox Series + PC + xCloud on Android, and other factors.

They are probably not committing with any exclusivity because it is not decided yet. The consoles didn’t even launch yet

@talos48: its anything but wishful thinking. Contrary to this weird notion that they'll definitely make these games for competing platforms to recoup the acquisition price...investors with big Microsoft positions aren't going to just green light a 7.5 billion acquisition and let the acquired studios keep plugging away at software products for competing platforms without any scrutiny. A decision on which, if any, Zenimax titles appear on a competing platform definitely has not already been made and it will be done on a case by case basis almost assuredly and only if its definitively a fiduciary responsibility to Microsoft stakeholders.

And it isn't as simple as game xyz on the most platforms possible = more revenue, which = better for Microsoft stakeholders. If that were the case they'd just be like f it, let's sell all of our first party IPs on as many competing platforms as possible! New Halo metroidvania for the Switch coming right up!

There is a very, very real probability that the decision is made that it is in Microsoft's best interest to keep TES and Fallout on PC/Xbox platforms through Gamepass. This is an undeniable objective fact and not an expression of opinion.

@lawgun: Minecraft is a different case coz it was already on other plattforms before MS bought Mojang.
MS didnt pulled the plug coz of existing deals and contracts.
The same for Wasteland 3,Outer Worlds and the upcoming Psychonauts...there was already closed publishing deals made and MS had to respect those deals.
Any new game from now on is in MS' hands and it will be interesting to see how that puns out

@sladakrobot: Doesn't explain how they CONTINUED to put it on new systems beyond the existing contracts AFTER they bought Mojang. Or explain how they also shipped Minecraft Dungeons to the competing PS4 and Switch when it was never on those before.

I can totally see Microsoft continuing to offer established, big multiplatform games to competing systems (one of the most likely reasons they are keeping the Bethesda publishing arm active, more likely to have SONY agree to have them on their system if they appear to be published by Bethesda instead of having the Xbox Studios name emblazoned on a startup screen. But new and some of the AA offerings I can totally see becoming exclusive to Xbox and PC, I even expect Starfield to be one of these (especially given the rumors that SONY was seeking some sort of exclusivity for that title as well). Either way Microsoft wins.

@dlCHIEF58: i see Minecraft like a phenomenon and outside of console wars. It is pretty much everywhere(pc,consoles, schools, hospitals, sports). That is why Dungeons was a no brainer or any future spinnoff imo.

What i want to say is that it is not granted that every Zenimax game will be automatically a multiplattform game. MS has a saying in this and while i believe timed exclusivities will be a thing in general, some titles might be exclusive to xbox and pcs if it benefits

No, I should've started that with a massive laugh at the idea, but I don't want to undercut my statement that no, even with zenimax it is still the 3rd best console for RPGs. The switch being far and away the best.

@jdz: Depends on what kind of RPgs you like wRPGs or jRPGs. I love Western and my son loves Japanese RPGs so he uses the PS4 mostly and I use the Xbox more. We both use Switch and PC, but he finds a lot more RPGs on the Switch than I do.

I never will understand what people see in turn based grindy RPGs, but to each their own.

@amoo2: it's funny because I remember when I was a kid I thought if the west made RPGs they would be so much better than jrpgs, but I've played a ton of both and WRPGs just don't have the same caliber of stories. And they are so much less fun (imo) to play.

Probably because jrpgs all have parts of the game where it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a nice release valve.

But for me it's less about the grind and all about the story, and I have yet to play a WRPG with a very compelling story. Mass effect has been the closest, and even though I LOVED Fallout 4, the story was very...meh.

Persona 5 makes them look silly by comparison, and I was not a persona fan before playing 5. It is just hands down the best RPG I've ever played in every conceivable way. Gameplay, style, music, fighting engine.

But like you said. To each there own. It's cool you get to game with your son. Hopefully when my daughter gets a little older I get to do that too.

AT BEST...Xbox has never been higher than the third choice of any RPG enthusiast.

Mods make PC the automatic always number one choice.

Microsoft's catering to dudebros and shooter types and sports, racing TV types has always meant that narrative driven gamers have not been the target market.

Not being the preferred console platform - by about ten miles - of other more standard JRPG titles like Persona means this headline is just an abject, total, complete fail. (That would be Sony btw.)

The headline for this is pure fanboyism.

@BeefoTheBold: I'm not sure why you brought up PC's when in the title it says it's the best choice for consoles. Bethesda RPG's and other Western RPG's have done very well on consoles, so for Xbox to have the biggest western RPG makers thus makes it a great console destination for RPG's, I don't think that's really disputable.

The headline is fine, your comment is pure PC elitism.

I am holding off 12 months at least before buying an expensive Sony console just to play a few exclusives and very limited backwards compat too.

Even the Series S is a better buy than PS5 right now.
