[UPDATE] Epic Games has clarified that vehicles and a new map could come to Fortnite: Battle Royale some day, though nothing is locked down as of yet.

"The team is focused right now on delivering the map update to players this week. While we have nothing to announce right now regarding vehicles or additional maps, the team dedicated to delivering all kinds of new content to players on a regular basis, and wouldn't rule anything out," a representative told GameSpot.

Now Playing: Fortnite Battle Royale - Update #5: Incoming Map Update

The original story is below.

Gears of War creator Epic Games' popular, stylized shooter/building game Fortnite has passed a new player milestone. More than 40 million people have downloaded the game as of January, the studio told Glixel. This is up 10 million from 30 million in December.

Epic wouldn't provide any details on how the 40 million downloads are spread between the paid Save the World version and the free PUBG-like Battle Royale mode. Whatever the case, 40 million is a massive figure, the likes of which many games never come close to reaching.

The interview covers other subjects as well such as under-the-hood improvements to make the game look and run better and more. You can read the full interview here at Rolling Stone.

Battle Royale's map is getting big new update this week on PS4, Xbox One, and PC that introduces new points of interests such as new named areas. Additionally, the map's biomes will be divided up more clearly with the aim of helping players distinguish them. "The swamp feels swampier, the mountains feel more mountain-y. Really, the different areas of the map feel more unique," he explained. For more on the changes, check out the embedded video above.

Typical GS posters didn't even read the article.

Being a F2P download, and its most popular mode also being free helps heavily with that player count.

No official description towards how many put money towards Fortnight screams volume. Games popular, but not that profitable, otherwise Epic would be bragging about it.

People 'buy' PUBG, they "download" F2P FN. Nothing to see here.

When pubtoons(fortnite) dropped it was a buggy mess. I had to redownload that trash 4 times before they ironed out all the bugs. So 40 mill isnt impressive. Give me the download stats or F off.

I wonder how many of that 40m were like me playing pubg on pc so this peaked my interest on PS4, I downloaded it played 1 game and deleted it, I think I’ll just stick to pubg on pc and x1x for all my battle royal needs thanks. Before anyone starts PS4 pro is my preferred platform so no I’m not an elitist or an Xbot I just think that fortnight looks and plays like something that belongs on Nintendo, that’s not a slight against Nintendo either I loved Zelda on my switch.

@Leefx:

Yeah, its pretty sad that the gaming community has become so toxic that people feel the need to defend their platform choices.

@obiroid1: You mean you don't understand that I was deliberately typing in the way people do to make fun of fanboys? Also Star Wars has capitals and it's I'd, not id. Do you know anything about the English language?

Pubg, fortnite, and h1z1 are all good to me. It's a good variety to the battle royale type.

@santinegrete: No you can not play the "Save the World" mode for free, only the Battle Royale mode. You will be able to "in 2018" they're saying, but I've no idea when. I'm waiting for the same thing.

Completely addicted to this. The building mechanics are so simple and instant, which adds a layer of strategy when getting into a gunfight you can't get with other shooters.

Things that I can't comprehend regarding this hobby... how the hell twitch and "youtubers" became so popular. And these kind of games that revolved around building stuff (the survival crap, the minecraft effect). I really don't understand, it's so fucking retarded. Maybe I'm too old for his hobby... I never imagined back in the 90's playing my Super Nes and etc... that this hobby would "evolve" to something so pathetic. Maybe it's time to let it go, lol

@gleencross:

"how the hell twitch and "youtubers" became so popular"

You need to look at this from other angles.

Some people prefer to watch games than play them. That's why Telltale is popular, and other story games with little effort, would also state because of those 'Story Gamers' they may watch someone just to know the plot for free essentially. And without demanding input or memorisation .

And while I would rather play a game always. I know many that like to watch streamers. . and guess it's a preference thing. Best not to judge others for what they enjoy.

"And these kind of games that revolved around building stuff"

RTS games involved building, and to be honest modding has always been popular on the P.C. platform. Creating is cool.

@RSM-HQ: I know this is a late answer, but whatever... I understand the concept of games focused on storytelling, hell, Metal Gear Solid is my alltime favorite game series. Saying that, it's one thing if you stop and watch a cutscene, another thing entirely is to watch a random guy playing rocket league and being obnoxious, talking loudly about things that makes no sense, not related to the game at all. I witnessed my young cousin watching this kind of content (he is 13 years old) and I couldn't comprehend, this kind of shit is considered "entertainment"? Youtube opened the way for average people to publish their own stuff and it is really ugly for most part, but I can take a blind eye for poor production value and lack of professionalism everywhere. I just find amusing how the general public gets entertained with trash. Not saying my taste is better or any of this pompous crap, I love american sports for example and most people in my country think their leagues are trash, lol It's more about the lack of class and any significant production value that can justify the final product. I still remember a bad violinist in the early years of youtube, average talent to say the least... Then, she started to cosplay videogame characters, looking "cute" with cheap cosplay while playing their violin, dancing around like a retard... that was it, huge views numbers. It's perplexing how gullible and stupid the videogame fanbase is, that's my point. Back in the nintendo vs sega days, we lived in our own little neighborhoods, having discussions with friends and etc... When the internet opens up the gates, goddamn, this simple hobby became something ugly.

@gleencross: You could have stuck with "whatever" and your point would have remained the same level of relevance.

And that's not sarcasm, I agree to a point.

I not only get your point of view, I also relate to it as someone who enjoys playing games, 'I' do not watch playthroughs and streams. Gaming to me is enjoyable and wouldn't trade that in for watching anything really, I don't even watch many movies or television shows.

The difference however, is to accept some of these people don't like playing games. No one person is the same and we all have different interests.

@RSM-HQ: That's a very mediocre point of view. "No one is the same, tastes can be different", etc.. You don't say Sherlock? The point here is about alienation, not taste. Why did you think the majority of the watchers are kids? Do you really think a 13 years old brat knows anything about the perception of taste? There's a huge issue regarding lack of education among millennials, they have the internet at their hands, but they used it for stupidity. The internet was supposed to be a source of information, not something like that... not so long ago we witnessed two world leaders trading insults on twitter, a youtuber filming a dead body, twitch users streaming for 48+ hours straight and dying in the process, etc.. How can you not see how wrong this shit is? You give the tools to uneducated individuals to spread their own content, that's the result.

@gleencross: I got to "brat" before giving up reading your reply

So. . Is any of that attitude necessary? And what makes you think kids are not buying games with sales for games being higher than any generation of gaming ever?

Seems to me you're being negative for the sake of it at this point, just to stir an otherwise formal reply; despite me agreeing with you to a degree.

You don't have to like something, but your perspective of what's fun and entertaining is just that. Yours. Furthermore, why do you care what others, many of a younger generation as you consider, enjoy?

Seems other opinions and taste only annoys you for whatever reason, and add that towards your dismissive attitude, this discussion has no relevance in continuing_

@RSM-HQ: Relevance? Don't be pathetic dude, I'm just training my english. I don't really care, it's just puzzling to me. At least I try to comprehend behaviors that look weird to me, not just accepting a mediocre pov of "taste is subjective".

@gleencross: I hear ya but there's still so many classics-style new games to enjoy! Dark Souls is very close to SNES games in terms of difficulty and action...Zelda is still around and kicking, and if you liked old SNES RPGs, there's still a lot of JRPGS on ps4 such as persona and Tales.

The new styles are weird to me too but there's still something for everyone..

@gleencross: play more traditional new games, find a hobbie to complement. Don't worry, so few games to invest cash on will pay that.

I played this as an alternative to pubg...and I HATED it. It's too cute, and the building mechanic doesn't seem a good fit. I know, I know...opinions. I just didn't think it belonged. Takes away tactics such as getting the high ground, or running cover to cover.

@demi0227_basic: I actually tried this before PUBG and I hated it as well. Then I was like to my friends there's no way i'm buying PUBG now if it's anything like this game. They urged me that it's not, it's totally different. So I reluctantly tried PUBG, and was shocked at the difference. I went in thinking it would be sh*tty but came out having a blast. The two games have the same concept yet they are different.

I don't know, maybe it was the atmosphere, seeing car pursuits while people are hanging out the window shooting them. Fortnite put me off to buying PUBG for a while until I was convinced otherwise. Glad I got the game, it does need a lot of work but I can see why it's popular.

@demi0227_basic: I agree. I tried it too. I was absolutely turned off by going into a building to take cover only to have someone instantly build stairs up to the windows and shoot me from behind. A firefight begins out in the open? Instant cover is popping up. It's just so weird to see that happening.

@og_gamerzzz: Not at all. Whoever suggests vehicles clearly hasn't played the game enough. At most, the game needs a speed boost potion and even then, it has to be carefully implemented, in a game where travelling time is NOT an issue.

Why do people want cars so bad when the map is so small? Need some quick travel? Go rocket riding or find a bounce pad.

@shinspikes: Exactly. This is a great decision by the devs. This game is face paced enough to not need them. PUBG is extremely slow paced, outside of gun battles, so you need them to get around.
