Forza Horizon 5 Breaks Xbox Records

The racing game has already reached 4.5 million people and it sets a launch record for Xbox Game Studios.

Forza Horizon 5 is off to a fantastic start, it would seem. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed on Twitter that the racing game has already reached 4.5 million players across console, PC, and the cloud.

Forza Horizon 5 also becomes the "largest launch day" for an Xbox Game Studios title (though the title it dethroned was not revealed), and it hit a peak concurrent player figure that was 3X bigger than Forza Horizon 4's peak concurrent record. "Thank you players and congrats to [Playground Games]," Spencer said.

The executive said Microsoft's multi-year investment into opening up Xbox games for more people through PC, the cloud, and Game Pass is now paying off in a big way. "Forza Horizon 5 shows that promise coming to life," Spencer said.

Unlike past entries in the series, no one needs to buy Forza Horizon 5 outright to play it. The game is included on Game Pass for Xbox and PC, and it's available on mobile phones and tablets, too, through the cloud. You no longer need a console or PC to play many of Microsoft's Xbox games. Spencer has been saying for some time that Microsoft no longer measures success on a unit sales basis for games or systems, but rather, the company defines success as having more people playing Xbox games wherever they are, on whatever hardware they might have.

Given the very strong start for Forza Horizon 5, it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft's next big game, Halo Infinite, performs in the market. Not only is the game included with Game Pass, but the multiplayer element is completely free-to-play, so its potential audience is massive.

GameSpot's Forza Horizon 5 review scored the racing game a 9/10. "Forza Horizon 5 is another meaningful evolution of the series as opposed to a reinvention, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a case of more of the same," reviewer Alessandro Barbosa said. "Even when it is familiar, Forza Horizon 5 makes small, but thoughtful changes to its established blueprint that hones in on the people behind the cars in a way that the franchise has previously just glossed over."

On PC for me this games crashes after each event, changing cars, things that create loading screens. Sometimes it crashes randomly. About 4 times per hour or more for the 2 or so hours I tried it. Hoping for a patch.

@harharbinks: Can play on pc or tablet in the meantime? Or isn't it a cross purchase game?

I just bought an X box series X. I still haven't set it up yet ( the reason I bought it is I already have a PS5 and an LG CI 55 inch 120hz TV, and this is the opitimal gaming set up for money and performance). But a driving game? Yawn.

@dmblum1799: There’s much more than just driving. I am not a huge fan of driving games myself but this arcade type of playstyle can be major fun.

@phili878: "There’s much more than just driving".

99.9% of this game is driving.

@thecupidstunts: actually 100% is , but what I meant was the different types of events, although you drive in them, you dozens of times drive differently and uniquely unlike NFS games for instance where you just have different car types and always drive the same activities.

Hard to explain but driving games beat shooters on consoles.

@thecupidstunts: He means it's not your traditional race from point A to B stuff. There's fun off-beat modes online like a zombie mode where you have to infect the other teams, capture-the-flag, etc. Plus, you've got stunts and stuff. It's not your typical gearhead game, but it can be that too.

Although the game is exactly the same as the previous version with a few new goodies and perhaps a fair amount of better visuals (not much better but noticeable), I must confirm, the game is good.

Reaching lvl 50 soon and still some drive left before taking my Forza break.

One noticeable difference is the AI is more difficult. I used to be a highly skilled driver before, now above average can already cause major headaches.

Really stoked with the game so far, although having played every Forza title ever, this is the first one with bugs on launch day. I'm on Xbox Series X and there are loads that haven't been addressed with a patch yet, which is quite disappointing. So far I've noticed these; can't switch radio stations, convertible tops don't work on all cars, can't reach the Forza network at all, and shifting gears switches between manual and auto a few times during festival scout missions. none of these are game breaking, but they should have been resolved by now.

I wonder how 3rd party companies make money with Gamepass.

I had 2 years of XBL Gold stacked and did the $1 promo where it changed my Gold into XBL Ultimate. So I got 2 years of Ultimate for a buck. Plus I have another 2 years that came with my Series X (haven't activated it yet though)

@Vodoo: I don't know of course since I'm not involved in this particularly, but my guess based on other busniess deals and company thinking I've had irl through work my guess is 3rd party gets a guaranteed fixed compensation from microsoft and then either another fixed sum or a small % based on milestones f ex the number of players playing their specific game on the service, probably with some clause that it has to be for atleast a set period of time etc. Or they can get compensation in other ways such as lower cost for them to publish all/some/specific title of their games on a say xbox or another perk like that.

So 3rd party has to make an educated guess if they will earn more or less than not allowing it on the service. They will earn less money on each player that would otherwise buy the game at full price regardless if it's not on the service, but they will get money they would otherwise not get from the people who didn't even have the game in their sights and just tried it out because it would be at no extra cost for them since they already have the service.

This might also open those gamers eyes to that companies other titles or maybe create a new fan of the franchise for future titles etc. That is also the way it works with having a game on many platforms and Microsofts own thinking when expanding their games beyond xbox. I as a pc gamer would never ever buy a complete and limited ecosystem like xbox that for me is all and all infierior to what I already have, and does not add anything but access to very few titles not available on pc. But now that their games are available to me I'm more than happy to shelf out some cash on games that I find interesting including any potential dlc etc on those games that I otherwise would not spend any cash on at all. So they have added revenue by adding new customers such as me, willing to buy the games, not willing enough to buy their hardware for those games though.

So the educated guess is basically will they get more profit overall by the end of the day by potentially cutting costs, adding other business beneficial perks for them and adding more customers and selling additional content/games to more customers than they loose by earning less from the customers that they already have hooked and that would buy the game at full price anyway.

The more people on the service, the lower the risk of loosing money and easier for more 3rd party to allow their games on there. Just like the more options customers have for access to a game the more potential purchases a game has.

Some companies wait and let the hooked customers pay full price and once the initial purchase rush has dwindled they put it on there to try and "double dip" and hook new customers. Or like Sony, they let the few that would buy a PS5 for a game get one, and they get the cash from their top titles, and then 1-2 years later when the sells slow down they release them on pc and it gets another big bump from those not willing to buy the PS5 for the game.
I know the last bit has nothing to do with gamepass but the thinking is the same.

@Vodoo: Oh they make money and we are just looking in from the outside and do not know the nuts are bolts and I am thinking it is the income split such as and this is only an example 20/80. Ethier way it goes those developers need something to play on and it will cost one something as nothing is free. If they push a whole lot it does not matter what the split is with some exceptions.

Awesome for Playground, they are definitely a premier studio for Xbox. Game is absolutely brilliant. This just makes me more excited to see what they are doing with Fable.

Decided slightly last minute (Monday night) to buy the game pass early access as I’ll buy the add ons anyway and it’s definitely one of the best racing games I’ve ever played. This and gran turismo are going to keep my racing happy all next year

Great news, but not surprised. I don't play this genre and I played it for a few hours last night without even realizing it. Honestly, this might be my game of the year because it's so well done.

I'm also the same as you, not really all that interested in racing games. With FH4, I lost interest after a month or two, but FH5 is so polished and the visuals so amazing that I wouldn't be surprised if I play it on more occasions. Great job to all the developers. You know they're super talented, when they can make a fan out of someone whos not even into the genre in the first place.

@blaznwiipspman1: I'm like you, I'm not a fan of racing games, but for some reason, the Horizon games suck me in. They are fun, period. I don't really care what genre a game is if it's fun, that's the whole reason for playing games. FH5 is just flat out beautiful as well. The scenery is amazing, the cars look awesome, and being able to design your own paint and vinyl jobs can keep even creative types who really don't like racing busy for hours and hours. I'm not surprised at how successful it has been.

Its a really fun game but i hate that i have to tweak every car that i am going to use just so i can do hard corners, with every race having a mandatory 2 to 3 hard corners. Other than that its a fun game, great music and pacing.

@s1taz4a3l: Maybe you can check out the most popular tunes (also paints) from the community for your car/s.
They are for free (aside from the upgrade parts you need) and if you happen to like a tune, keep following the creator...he/she might have other tunes for more cars.

This game is a serious GoTY contender.

I haven't felt this much pure joy playing a game since the original release of The Ocarina of Time.

So I got this game. It's fun..I like it. But I just don't get the overall hype lol. To me this is very similar to Need for Speed Heat...almost the same game. Car handling seems to be on point though.

yes, its a racing game like anything else with tournaments and missions and all these records you have to break etc. Its a bit different from NFS because that focuses more on street racing. The real reason for all the hype is that the game looks so stunning, and beautiful that it stands above everything else. A few times, I couldn't tell if the picture from a real life scene, thats how amazing the visuals are. On top of that, its clear that playground games put a TON of effort into making the mechanics of each car as accurate as possible. I can easily tell the minor differences in each car, just by driving them and im not even a racing fan in the first place.

Not surprised at this. It's the best driving game i've ever played. Playing this with a wheel is altogether a different experience, I'll never play a driving game ever again with a pad, played for 8 hours straight today hardly got up from my seat. Honestly didn't expect to be this hooked when i fist started. It's so good.

It's a shame that players on PC Game Pass have to uninstall every program on their PC in order to get this game to launch properly. Broken, indeed.
