Free release of MechWarrior 4 approved

This is great! I hope Mechwarrior 5 comes out soon.

And then, Shattered Steel 2!

2011 and I am still waiting for Mech 5.

@Freakin_Out And everyone else: You can get MechWarrior 4 at mektek.net. You'll have to download their thing called MTX to dl the game (they use torrent, and MTX is what they use for the torrent), but it's well worth it, IMO. It does run on 7, and it even runs well on my laptop.

Its tweaked just fine.. even has wide screen abilities. As part of their deal to release it for free they got permission to update the code and make modifications. Runs like a champ under XP, Vista and 7 without modification.

if the free Mechwarriors game is not tweaked to run on modern machines it is going to be a b+++h to get it up to run. I do not have to wait for it being I still have all my CDs relating to Mechwarrior. What I would like to know is the status of the new mechwarrior game.

@ax23000 You're right, some games are worth $5, my problem with Nintendo is that they are famous for repackaging the same 'ol content a hundred different ways. Did you buy Super Mario 3, Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Advance? They don't care how many times you buy it, they will find a new and exciting way to get you to buy it again. Sure their virtual console games don't need to be free, but they could offer you a bit of a discount for buying such an old game, that in all liklihood, you have played before.

@Travis281 - Just about every company out there sells old games--why single out Nintendo? And since when did something being old mean it should instantly be free? I suppose I should blame movie studios for selling King Kong, Citizen Kane, etc. Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, and many more NES games are easily worth 5$. Hell, Nintendo could have charged substantially more and still had strong sales I suspect. Don't get me wrong, I love that this game is coming out for free. But that's a gift from the developer, not a right. Any company should feel free to sell games they own--no matter when the game was developed.

So where can you DL this then i used to own it. :D

Some companies release games from 10 years ago for free while Nintendo continues to charge $5 for their games from 25 years ago.

/Cheer I love this Game Been playing it since the Pencil and paper days. Was very Sad to see that the old Fasa interactive was bought by M$ and changed to there own inhouse studios. Way better than Robotech.

It's so great to see really good games like this have additional lives as free content. I'm over thirty, and I hope that I'll be able to download lots of the great games of my childhooh for my own kids. I think it also bodes well for future developers to have a sense of the history of gaming and gameplay. These old games offer tons of features and ideas that I think could enhance the developement of future titles.

Good on MS for doing the right thing! I have all the Mechwarrior 4 stuff already, but it'll be good to get it digitally on my laptop. Hell, it should run great on a netbook! Hopefully they tweak it to ensure compatibility and make sure it runs good with widescreen monitors though.

I have almost all the mechwarrior games, including 2,3, 4, and mercenaries.These were fantastic games and no other robot game even comes close. I hope they release Mech 5 eventually.With todays graphics and destructable environments a new mech game would be amazing.Can't wait!

wow free before its licensing runs out, ya dont see that much in a game. Only costs about 2 quid for the game and the black knight expansion and a 2 more for mercs

Original game size- 600 megs. User made maps, mods and patches- 500 gigs. Free is good. Mech 5 is in the works too if I remember

That is awesome. But nothing is better then playing Mechwarrior in a Tesla 2 pod.

a new DX10 and rumerd Physx capable Mechwarrior game is in the works. The trailer (suposedly taken from real in game footage) looks awsome.

@Gor-Tak Bit you're missing is that M$ was the publisher for MW4, and that they own the right to make computer games about the Battletech setting. Why would this studio need M$ "approval" to release it for free for PCs? The company is not owned by M$, nor is the IP AND no one needs permission to develope for the PC platform. What am I missing? And a decent mech game is desperately needed for consoles.

I remember playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries back when I had my crappy s**ttop that could barely run it =P I still loved it though it was great fun. Nice, well done Microsoft, I miss FASA studios because I loved Shadowrun.

Microsoft should have bought the rights and sold it on XBox Live for $5. lol!! I'd rather play it on my XBox 360 then the PC. I did play and beat MechWarrior and MechWarrior 2 on the PC many, many years ago. Both games were awesome for their time. I wonder when this will be released for FREE Download?

MechWarrior 2 was also one of my first PC games. Flight sims brought me into gaming really. But, I remember seeing Mech 2 running on a PC in my Fort Carson PX, and it was one of the coolest things I ever saw. I am looking forward to playing Mech 4 for free, and will be counting the days til its true successor is released. This news is great. @Zloth2 Chill Zloth! PC games are the ONLY ones that stand the test of time. There are communities out there still playing PC games from the nineties, and going strong. The PC gaming community is BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than any XBox or PS3 online community out there. Far more helpfull and newb friendly. You don't have to deal with those pesky pre-teen, puberty fueled a-holes that XBox Live and PSN are littered with. Good PR move MS. It is about time you took one for the team ;)

Well this will be totally worth a download. I have really fond memoires of Mechwarrior Mercenaries.

Personally I never liked Mech4....Mech2 and to a lesser extent, Mech3, were amazing however. I do hope releasing Mech4 for free isn't the end of Smith & Tinker's contribution to the franchise's longevity. The news blackout regarding the Harmony Gold situation has tested my optimistic nature.

I had Mech Warrior 2. lol. Good times. That was like my first experience with PC gaming.

SWEEEEEET. Do get it, people! And do get the community mods too! There are some mods with really rare Mechs on the Internet.
