Future Fantastic Beast Movies Are Not Guaranteed - Report

Major franchise decisions hinge on The Secrets of Dumbledore's performance.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which is due for a stateside release on April 15, will reportedly be make-or-break for the franchise. According to Variety, there's no screenplay for a fourth installment and Warner Bros. executives are waiting to see how the film performs at the box office to give the green light.

Warner Bros. pumping the brakes at this point casts doubt on whether Fantastic Beasts will complete its ambitions as a five-film franchise. But the franchise has been beset with a steady stream of setbacks, so this film proving to be a pivotal juncture for the series does not come as a total shock. The film was repeatedly delayed by COVID and was repeatedly tied up in controversies stemming from its principals.

For example, in 2021, Mads Mikkelsen was called in to replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald for this film--and the latter actor was paid an eight-figure fee ($10 million or more) as part of his exit package after reportedly filming just one scene. Ezra Miller, who has a key role in The Secrets of Dumbledore, was recently arrested for disorderly misconduct and harassment. And has also been widely publicized, Harry Potter author JK Rowling herself has become a problematic figure exhibiting discriminatory behavior, frequently offering public support of anti-transgender rhetoric.

"This is their Star Wars franchise. You expect more," exhibitor relations analyst Jeff Bock told Variety. "This is supposed to be a crown jewel, and it's not behaving like one."

Nevertheless, The Secrets of Dumbledore has been performing well in China, where it opened last weekend. Converted into US dollars, the film there took in roughly $9.7 million--a massive take considering all movies in Chinese theaters combined generated $15.5 million for the weekend. This, also, despite the film being censored--the removal of six seconds of dialogue referring to a gay relationship between Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Grindelwald (Mikkelsen).

The third movie did next to nothing to expand the world, the lore or the characters. We ending the movie at basically the same point that we started.

Looks like this is the weakest opening yet for the franchise. Only took in $43 million in the US, and $71 mil overseas, where the movie has been out for over a week already--making its to-date total $193 million. And the thing costs $200 mil to make.

No way Warner Bros. is gonna make 2 more movies when each one so far has had diminishing returns. This franchise is dead in the water.

More then anything, they need better movies/stories. While the first one was just okay, carried largely by Jacob and Queenie actors and magic in the early 1900s USA. The second movie was a baby diaper dumbster fire, where none of the acts I -III carried each other, way too many side characters introduced and given no importance to the main story. It was if, 3 directing crews shot parts to the whole film, and editors were left to wonder wtf to make of it. Red herrings galore and Porpatina, Lestrange and Newts love triangle was as bungled as can be, so heavy handed.

So ... is there any way to turn this series around....., As not based off a book but screenplays by Rowlings, Murray, and other producers. Rowlings cannot write a screenplay, and/or the treatment given to the story afterwards does not work well to film. Film-goers really do not give a hoot about the actors, Rowlings political beliefs, or Deeps marriage.... they just want a good story and movie.

This series was only supposed to be 2 movies at the beginning way back 8+yrs ago, but because the first movie did well despite mediocre reviews, it has expanded out with noobvious clear path. It really should depend on this 3rd movie, if it sucks and no one watches it.... then let it die.

Hey the actors are old enough now for some sequel movies to HP, maybe those might be good.

And holy crap is the incels out in comments below. Don't these people have pictures of empty egg cartons to send to women with active careers.

@jenovaschilld: Having a follow-up trilogy to HP with the original cast all grown up is not a bad idea. The issue would be that Rowling needs to put out new books, describing the status of the HP world.

@kutraz: Agree, these screen plays written by Rowling, with others and producers just do not work. Write the novels, adapt them to film, is the best bet.

I would like to see a massive loss of magical powers, throughout the wizardry world, panic runs wild throughout all of the schools of magic, world wide. The families of Ron/Herm, Potters, and especially Draco Malfoys kids, in a 'modern family style', have to deal with it. Magical creatures begin to cut loose without wizards to keep them reigned in, and government goes into havoc trying to deal with it all. The magical school of magic, Hogwarts may have the secrets needed to solve it all, and since they kept the kids who lost their magic enrolled.... a muggle child, geta caught up and enrolled into the school by accident, and helps to save the wizarding world.

Yeah, I was a fan.

The fact that their box office takes are diminishing is probably just one of the factors, I'm guessing.

From my understanding, Depp and JK have done nothing wrong.
