Game Developers Choice Awards to honor Miyamoto, Tetris creator

Nintendo's mad genius to get lifetime achievement trophy; Alexey Pajitnov will receive casual-game pioneer prize.

Last week, CMP Media revealed the nominees for the 2007 Game Developers Choice Awards. The awards, which are held in conjunction each year with the Game Developers Conference, are selected by members of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). The two most nominated games were Okami and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, followed by Gears of War and several offerings for the Wii, including The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii Sports.

In addition to honoring specific games, the ceremony will award several game-industry luminaries for their cumulative bodies of work. This year, the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto will receive a Liftetime Achievement award. Over three decades at Nintendo, Miyamoto created the Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and Legend of Zelda franchises. Most recently, he helped design the Wii console and several of its most popular games.

Other award winners are as follows:

Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov will receive the first Penguin Award for "diving into unknown territory." Pajitnov created Tetris in 1985 while working for the Computer Center of the Moscow Academy of Science in the Soviet Union.

Sound designer George "The Fat Man" Sanger will receive the Community Contribution Award. Since he entered the industry in 1983, Sanger has helped create the sound effects and soundtracks to more than 250 games, including Wing Commander and ATF.

Game retailer, designer, and writer Greg Costikyan will receive the Maverick Award for "taking risks by experimenting with unconventional methods." Costikyan is the founder and proprietor of Manifesto Games, an online store where independent designers can hock their low-budget PC wares.

The 2007 Game Developers Choice Awards will be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on Wednesday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be emceed by Tim Schafer, head of Double Fine Productions and designer of Psychonauts.

What does "the penquin award" mean? I love Tetris and never really thought of it as "Diving into unknown territory", I always thought of it as a evolution of psychology puzzel games.

Yeah, Shigeru Miyamoto! In the lyrics/words of that old commercial advertising Nintendo Power back in the early ninties, "You've got the power, Nintendo Power!" And Yeah.. It IS GOOD to see game developers getting their due props, just like other-media artists. And to ALL the game developers reading this, "You Rock in Surround Sound Stereo!"!

It's good that game developers get recognized in similar manners to artists in other medias.

Is this their first lifetime achievement award? If not then who got the award before Miyamoto? It doesnt make sense to give other people the award before Miyamoto who is probably the oldest developer that is still extremely busy to this day. I guess weirder things have happened. The Rock Hall of Fame inducts a lot of unfamous bands before mega bands like Pink Floyd.

i havn't been keeping up with this awards ceromony, (to be honest, this is the first i've hear of it) but wouldn't Miyamoto win this award every year? Who else has a name in the video game industry? I doubt the lifetime achievment has ever gone to anyone else

Does anybody know what Pajitnov is doing these days? I heard he was a programmer at Microsoft, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. Is he still working in the games industry?

I wonder what Miyamoto's house looks like, is it all cluttered with game ideas and warp pipes or is it funky colours and full of barrels! (I bet he has a 109" plasma tv to play some zelda on)

I'd never heard of Manifesto Games before now. I'll have to bookmark this page and come back to check it out later... The recipients mentioned in the article are seem quite worthy of the awards being bestowed upon them.

The headline is sort of misleading. It makes it seem as though Miyamoto is the creator of Tetris. I was like, "wha?" :)

Schafer ought to get something. If more people actually bought the stuff he's created, they'd realize that he's a rare creative genius too.
