Game of the Year 2016 Countdown: #1

After spending the last four days counting down our picks of the Top 25 Games of the Year, we've finally reached our number one pick.

After spending days locked in fierce debate, our global team of GameSpot editors and video producers has finally assembled a ranked list of the 25 best games of the year. Our list is informed by an array of tastes and preferences, reflecting our team's diverse gaming backgrounds and opinions. We've spent the last four days counting down our picks, showcasing an abundance of games ranging the biggest triple-A offerings to the smaller indie experiences. WIthout further ado, here is our choice for number one.

1. Overwatch

Despite being another entry in the multiplayer shooter space, Overwatch becomes something different every time you play it. One match is a battle of attrition. Another is an unstoppable assault. Another is a tug of war between staunch defenders and vigilant assailants. You can snipe from the balconies of a Japanese rotunda or defend your team with energy orbs as you invade the frozen climes of a Russian factory. Overwatch is a shooter that contains a multitude of smaller shooters within its hectic sphere.

Now Playing: Game of the Year 2016: Number 1 - Overwatch

No Caption Provided

This is due in large part to Overwatch's cast. From a renowned Russian champion to a rollerblading Brazilian DJ, Overwatch contains a variety of international cultures and funnels them into distinct, personality driven characters for a diverse and lively cast of heroes. If you play as Ana, a mother who has come out of hiding to aid her friends, you'll be watching over your team, healing comrades with medicinal bullets and biotic grenades. Play as Reaper, on the other hand, and you'll be phase-warping from ledge to ledge, flanking opponents and shredding them with your dual shotguns. There is no one way you must contribute to your team's success: Overwatch is bold and balanced enough to let you play how you want.

The shooter's map design is the sturdy glue holding the disparate characters together, and a masterwork in the craft of multiplayer arenas. Choke points become virtual battlefields. Sightlines create lethal opportunities for skilled snipers. Varying elevations necessitate constant situational awareness and increase the verticality of already intricate maps.

No Caption Provided

Through colorful, intricate character design and stellar sound mixing, Overwatch creates a vocabulary of its own, wherein characters are recognizable from a distance, and the phrases "Justice Rains From Above" or "It's High Noon" are both cause for the opposing team. Overwatch is a game that unfolds as you go, and the more you play, the more you'll master the initially simple mechanics of each character. More importantly, you'll learn how to counter each character. This is a shooter that rewards players willing to decipher its intricacies.

But perhaps the most amazing aspect of Overwatch is how well each of the aforementioned parts contributes to a fantastic whole. It reminds us why shooters can be so thrilling. Overwatch ran the risk of overreaching when it pulled inspiration from numerous shooters throughout the years, yet it found a way to balance it all. It found a way to encourage dozens of different playstyles. It found a way to craft the best shooter in a year full of superb shooters, and in the process, became the best game of 2016. - Mike Mahardy

Uncharted 4 was 100 times better than Overwatch. Uncharted 4 should've been #1, and Overwatch shouldn't even be in the top 5.

Meh. Should have gone to Uncharted. Very enjoyable play through, not every game needs force that multiplayer only game play. While Uncharted has MP a real game developers skills and talent should be based on its ability to tell a good story with great action and characters and tack on a MP mode that isnt the games only feature. Whats funny and mildly off topic, it looks like No Mans Sky didnt even get a mention and was considered worse than "7 days to die" and that game was a horrid pile of trash, but still fun to play once you got past all the weird glitches. I still enjoy playing it from time to time

@jasonb520: I agree. Overwatch is an overhyped. Played the beta and it wasn't fun. Everything in the game has been done. UC4 was a great game and a great end for Nathan Drake.

Stale game modes, obsolete heroes, and a ludicrous micro-transactions gambling system drag Overwatch into a repetitive rhythm that's only fun for the people making money off this "been-there-done-that" shooter.

I'm not surprised.

Congratulations to Overwatch. I have no interest to play you, but still, congratulations.

Btw, this has nothing to do with one of the characters being gay, is it...?

Meh not surprised Overwatch won. Objectively it has the works to earn it.

Its just a pity the majority bent over to the game's utterly atrocious lootbox system though, its actually worse than the real money auction house because of how subtle a rip off the whole thing is.

But eh I'm not gonna fight it because Blizzard is god, I'm a pleb, I suck, ggez4q etc.

Gratz on the reward!

I admit I can see the rationale behind giving Overwatch GOTY. Sales figures support it. But then again, COD's always have high sales too. I just feel this is the beginning of the end for games with an emphasis on single-player and actual stories. We are moving into an age of MP-focused gaming and away from games with much emphasis on character development and story-driven gaming. Witcher 3 was a bright point but I don't see games of that type and quality being very regular anymore because development and testing is much harder for rich open world games of that genre than shooters. I would have rather seen a game like Dishonored 2 or at least Titanfall 2 which has good MP plus a decent campaign being rewarded with the award. I fear there will be a steady stream of MP-focused Overwatch type games from now on.

@Tomcat2007: Yeah there are going to be a lot of hero-based games now trying to grab a piece of the dollar pie Overwatch is munching on, much like there was a ton of MOBA's before this and a ton of Call of Duty clones before it and WW2 games before and so on.

Fact is though that with all these trends we still got amazing single-player games alongside them and this upcoming one is just that; yet another trend. We're still going to get single-player experiences because they still are successful, just look at how well Final Fantasy XV and Doom are doing.

And I mean, its not like we have a whole bunch of story-based single-player games to look forward to this year, most of the upcoming PS4 exclusives are just that.

@koospetoors: I guess I just don't see the trend that you see of continuing to get all these great new single-player games. Yes, we got Final Fantasy XV after over half a decade, and Doom had a fun single player campaign but at the end of the day Doom is still really just a space-themed COD. I'm not really saying any of this is right or wrong. Demand drives games. Overwatch is a game that sold well and represents the best of its genre and deserves accolades. I just look at last gen where around now we had already gotten 3 Mass Effects, 3 Bioshocks, multiple new Zeldas, a new Elder Scrolls, 2 Dragon Ages, multiple Borderlands, more JRPG's, etc. This generation has been pretty dry in getting games like these, other than HD remasters. I fear the trend will continue into the next generation which will be even more focused on the simplier to develop money makers like Overwatch.

the only 2016 game I bought was Doom.....eh, I was suckered into No Man's Lie, didn't buy into the hype but it still looked cool but I assumed it was exploration not resource management.....I haven't even taken the game out of the box yet......

i spent more time on MMO's and Fallout 4 than anything, literaly I was on F4 up to September then went into MMO's then came back to F4 in November.....

I even played some Civ 5 and Stellaris this year....I guess you can say Stellaris is the only other game I bought this year....I grabbed Civ 5 last year....

DOOM was awesome, great single player, not so hot MP.....

Glad to see PKM Sun/Moon outside of the top 25. What a lackluster game. Trials are horrible and gimmick.

In other hand, FE Fates deserved to be in the top 25. Solid FE game, despite the average story. The gameplay is one of the best of the franchise.

My personal GOTY was hands down the Division. It clearly has some balancing issues, but the friends I have made have kept me coming back day after day. The only games that have broken my year long trance have been: uncharted 4, titanfall 2, telltale Batman, and fire watch. Quality games that I just couldn't slog past the first few hours of gameplay, but recognize they were good games; battlefield, call of duty infinite, watchdogs 2, and deus ex.

Science says the most effective way to provide a shotgun blast of dopamine into the veins of a player is to let him experience "backflip-pew-pew-wallrun-evade-block-riposte insta-kill"...so, let's make a game that maximizes this and cut out everything else.

Next year, they will launch a game that directly injects dopamine into your spine. You will be able to feel extreme pleasure while flopping like a beached fish on your couch.

Game over, watch.

@quinnd6: How so? Tastes in games are completely subjective, just like music and movies. I mean sure I understand if any of the aforementioned media were utter abominations loaded with bugs and such, but I'd argue a lot of the games mentioned and not mentioned are of high quality in different respects.

The only thing left is to vote based on either popular opinion or Gamespot editors personal opinion. Besides, all opinions on "best of the year" titles should be taken with grains of salt.

The Last Guardian was my personal GOTY, but Overwatch made it into my top 5. I love the game, but I definitely do not think it is the GOTY. Also, having INSIDE ranked so low is mind boggling. That game is incredible, and a lot better than most of the games you ranked above it.
