Game Of Thrones Actor Drops Out Of LOTR: Rings Of Power, Role Recast

Sam Hazeldine is taking over for Joseph Mawle as the orc leader Adar in Season 2.

Amazon Studios has announced seven new cast members for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, including someone new who is playing the orc leader Adar after a recast.

Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones' Benjen Stark) played Adar in The Rings of Power Season 1, but he's dropping out for Season 2. Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders) is coming in to play Adar for the next season. Amazon did not provide any explanation as to why Mawle is leaving The Rings of Power.

Mawle himself commented on the news on Twitter. He said he feels honored that people liked his performance as Adar. But he's leaving Rings of Power because he feels it is his duty to "explore new characters and worlds."

"Wishing all the best to the cast and crew for S2. I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines," Mawle said.

New cast members for Season 2, which is now filming in the UK, include Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen "Zates" Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, and Nicholas Woodeson.

"We welcome these wonderful actors to our 'fellowship' and look forward to telling more incredible Second Age stories in season two," Amazon Studios boss Vernon Sanders said in a release.

The Rings of Power debuted in September and reached 100 million people globally, Amazon said. The creative team has five seasons mapped out, including the very last shot.

As mentioned, filming is underway on The Rings of Power Season 2, but Amazon has not announced a release date or plot details for the next season. Season 1 ended with a major revelation about a particular character, and Season 2 will dig into this, but beyond that, the plot is a mystery.

Season 2 is filming in the UK, which is a big departure from Season 1 that was shot in New Zealand, where Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies were produced.

I must be the only one who prefers this show to House of the Dragon which is also dull as shit compared to Thrones.

He was the best character and the only good thing about the show. The show surprised me though, it was way worse than i expected.

@chillingnaire: Shocking how uninteresting it was, given the production value.

Says "they didn't want to pay me enough for what they were asking me to do" to me. Pretty much the same story in all industries everywhere nowadays.

@jaykobwerdnahs: And the messed up part for me is that companies have been hitting record sales numbers for the past 10, dare I say 20 years in all entertainment fields. But the entertainment industry has been at an all-time low when it comes to paying actors/workers.

Like, where the hell is the money going? Are they using it as firewood?

@illegal_peanut: I've known the stage manager of a certain major theater in Toronto for 10 years, and my sister has done everything in the industry for the last 20 years, so I can tell you production and manufacturing costs have shot through the roof recently. I can't speak for the US, but in Toronto a lot of filming permits are dependent on the use of Union contractors, and those guys charge through the nose. You could use non-Union guys, but the quality of the work is no where near as good unfortunately. And then COVID hit and costs shot up even higher because everyone thought they deserved more after not being paid for over a year. In other words, that money is going into production. I don't like unions much, but that's not really a bad thing when you think about it. Now your average mook can make a decent wage as opposed to the people who dress up and say a few lines for an hour or two of shooting. Seriously, my sister gets like $1000 working on a few costumes for a month, but she got $2000 just to say a few lines for 2 hours of shooting. Sadly, it's way, WAY harder to get roles in movies and shows.

@Barighm: The whole point of unions is to give all us mooks a decent wage and benefits, so if that's a good thing to you then you ought to know that you actually like unions.
