Game Of Thrones Creators Announce Their New HBO Show

Confederate will begin production after the final season of Game of Thrones wraps.

Game of Thrones still has another season to go after the current one, but showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have announced their next show. The pair will return to HBO for Confederate, a dramatic imagining of an alternate future America that sounds every bit as provocative as their fantasy hit.

Benioff and Weiss will begin production on Confederate once work on the final season of Game of Thrones is completed. HBO have released a synopsis for the new show, which reads: "Confederate chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution.

"The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone--freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall."

In a statement, Benioff and Weiss explained that the concept for Confederate had existed for some time, and was originally considered for a movie. "We have discussed Confederate for years, originally as a concept for a feature film," they said. “But our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There won't be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world."

Benioff and Weiss will serve as writers and showrunners on Confederate. It currently has no premiere date, but with Season 8 of Game of Thrones yet to even start production, don't expect it for at least a couple of years. There are also several Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works, but Benioff and Weiss will not be heavily involved in these.

Glad it isn’t taking place in the past. Alternate timelines/realities are always fun, but some shows in the past few years have been mediocre at it.

I'm interested in learning more about this show. I understand the setting and all, but who is the lead cast and what will the story actually be telling?

Sounds absolutely fantastic. If they can even make it even a fraction as good as what Harry Turtledove and other authors have done then it would be great.

This is already trending on Twitter and the response is typical. Seems just like The Man in the High Castle on Amazon. I'm certainly interested and hope the slaves start whooping ass in the first episode

@Iamkalell: They might go with the there is no clear bad/good guy or they’re all bad/good in their own way approach.

Eh no thanks they ruined some good plotlines/characters in Game Of Thrones and the best ideas came straight from George RR Martin or his books.

@gamingdevil800: Its true that the show cutted a lot of content but somehow I believe its because of HBO and not those two. If they actually followed the books page by page, the show would have needed at least another season or two and probably they decided its too long. As for the changes in the compared to the book, some of them are great:

1. Arya and Tywin meeting probably gave us the greatest dialog in the show, not to mention the dept that the characters got from it.

2. Shireen Baratheon dead although very scandalous, it definately shocked everyone ... something like the changed finale in the Mist compared to the book.

There are probably some others which I forgot..

@gamingdevil800: that's exactly what I was thinking. Only reason why Game of Thrones is successful is because George RR Martin is the mastermind behind the whole project. He wrote all the books. They're using his ideas. Headline is a little misleading " Game of Thrones Creators" lol
