The 2005 edition of the World Cyber Games has officially kicked off and will continue over the next four days in Singapore. The tournament collects the best gamers in the world, through a series of regional qualifiers, and brings them all together to decide the best in several games.

The number of cyberathletes reached nearly 700 participants this year, with representatives from 67 countries vying for crowns. The total value of prizes and cash rewards this year tops $435,000, the largest purse since the WCG began in 2001.

San Francisco played host to the 2004 WCG finals, where the Netherlands beat out Korea for top honors by taking home gold medals in the Project Gotham Racing 2, FIFA Soccer 2004, and StarCraft: Brood War competitions. Next year, Monza, Italy, will host the finals.

Among the games features in this year's competition are Counter-Strike: Source, Halo 2, and Dead or Alive Ultimate. For more information on the competition, check out the official WCG Web site, where subscribers can watch a video stream of the event's highlights.

I dont' think these type of events are as popular in the U.S. as it is in Asia or Europe. I volunteered at the WCG 2004, and I was kind of disappointed at how many people showed up. The auditorium was full outside, but not many people bothered to watch the actual event.

So is this like the olympics of gaming or what. That's great. I would love to have a shot at that. Even if you don't win just being there would be an honor.

CS:S ousting 1.6...? o_O What is the world coming to when we trade precision (read: that thing that means the pros have skill, not just luck) for graphics?
