Games Are Announced Too Early | Spot On

With the news that the new Perfect Dark game is still years away, Tam and Lucy discuss why announcing games early can do more harm than good

A new Perfect Dark was revealed at The Game Awards way back in 2020, but a recent report from IGN has indicated that its release is still years away, despite Xbox's Matt Booty saying that he played it recently.

This isn't the first time this has happened. In fact, there are many games that have been announced and then gone missing in action. Often, this can do more harm than good, and yet it still keeps happening, which begs the question: why? On this episode of Spot On, Tam and Lucy discuss the dangers that can arise when games are announced too early, and why publishers and developers do it regardless.

Spot On is a weekly news show airing Fridays in which GameSpot's managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest news in games. Given the highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle of the massive video game industry, there's always something to talk about but, unlike most other news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic as opposed to recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

I think it’s just a way for devs to say “we’re working on something. Please don’t close us down. Look over there!”

Man, sooooo many games announced that never saw the light of day. Starcraft Ghost. Scalebound, Silent Hills, Star Wars 1313, Fable Legends, Rainbow Six Patriots, etc, etc. If I had a dime for every game announced that never came out I'd be loaded. Seriously. Yeah, they DO announce games too early. What are you going to do? Put a pre-order in for 7 years from now? Man, c'mon.

I did. For Star Citizen! BUT I did it fully knowing that it might take a while before I get to play a finished product (even if I never did, I was happy to invest a few dozen euros into a project as ambitious as that). Then again, the persistent universe is already so massive and detailed that it surpasses many other AAA games out there, although personally I'm more interested in Squadron 42 that has a story and characters. No way I would do this for something like CoD or Battlefield which basically simply repeat the same old patter again and again and again and again...

I have fewer issues with early release announcements than I do with Early Access.

yeah, they hype it too early and later says the game still in the beginning stages years later - just to kill the hype for their fans.

Time kills us all.
No need to make it angrier.
No need to fat shame it.

Next time you hug a new born, know that time will KILL them.

I'm not convinced it hurts anything at all. Maybe it hurts feelings when a game is cancelled. "Disappoints" would be far more apt.

Suits getting involved and driving everything to the mediocre center, creating wholly unnecessary bloat by blowing so much on vapid, ineffective marketing, and then being unwilling to take risks because of this environment which they have created - that hurts games and the industry. Naughty Dog telling us there's another Uncharted or The Last of Us on the very distant horizon doesn't hurt anything.

People demand their games NOW, much like toddlers, as if creating a Zelda or Resident Evil or GTA that is enthralling is easy. Games are rushed even when they hit a development plateau, are released as incomplete buggy messes, and give rise to the newest cottage industry of the post-release redemption story, which in most cases is a work of fiction.

In order to keep those meddling suits at bay, developers have to be able to say "Did you see how gamers responded to that announcement? Have faith in us!" That means they need to periodically tell us what they're working on. I mean, let's be real, even after Andromeda and everything else that's happened at Bioware, when I say "Mass Effect" right now, how many boners did those two little words produce? It's probably five years out yet, and in truth it probably will suck. But Liara. And the Geth. And certainly, somehow, Shepard. Boner. Don't lie.

In the case of Perfect Dark it was obvious the "announcement" was just to buy time. This was back when Xbox practically had no first party games in development beyond Halo Infinite (and you know how that turned out). Same thing with Fable.

I'm not sure whether games announced to early, or whether certain developers/publishers go through more changes now that pushes the development of certain games back, sometimes years. The "poster child" for this is Ubisoft, and specifically Skull & Bones. That game began as an offshoot of AC and got delayed and delayed because personnel changes, and Ubisoft's new focus on live service games, sent the game completely back to square one (multiple times.) It seems like this happens more often than it used to, or maybe we just read about it happening more often than we used to.

It's also a side-effect of games taking longer to make than ever. Can't really announce a game too early when it only takes one or two years to develop... but when it takes 6 years to make, at least wait until you've built the game's foundation before you announce it. And then, show us that foundation within one year. Then release the game within the next year. Otherwise it just comes across as stock price manipulation, like mentioned in the video. But I guess it works if they keep doing it...

I remember when games got announced less than a year before it's release, it was weird, but it kept the hype fresh.

Oh, come on now. They don't announce games too early.

We've only been waiting since 2008 for beyond good and Evil two.

Which was back when Gears 2 and Resistance 2 came out. And the Wii was every gamer's punching bag for jokes.

I personally have no idea why they announce some games so early myself. It actually hurts the IP and the company. Because if they announce anything that isn't that game. They get hammered by fans negatively and lose all good faith.

Like when everyone was waiting for a new Metroid Prime. And they gave us that molten hot garbage "Federation force". Or when everyone was waiting for a new Splinter Cell, and they gave us a Splinter Cell DLC for a mobile game no one played.

And if done too frequently, you can end up like Microsoft, who promised a whole bunch of exclusives last gen just for them to can most of their projects, and lose the faith of most reasonable and logical gamers. From "Re-core", "Crackdown III", "Halo Infinite", and "Red-fall" being either just okay or just terrible. To canceling games like "Phantom Dust 2", "Scalebound", "Conker", and "Fable Legends". And the funny thing is, people really wonder why Xbox is selling over 10 million fewer consoles then PS this gen.

@illegal_peanut: I mean I know 'why' they do it, and the argument it hurts the IP is not really there. But you are right... crying wolf, over and over again, does negatively hurt a 'developer' over time.

Why-- well no matter what you create- music, books, movies, games.... developers and studios are hyping their creation as much as possible, sometimes years in advance. Even nonfiction book authors are projecting their suspense novels long before they even have their plots set. I should I know, as my families business is in printing and we work authors, and game studios, even engineers for bridges, not even approved. Back to the why... because they are trying to get the best % deal from their publishers..., producers, investors, etc.. IF your next (mass media project is high enough profiled) you as the artist/creator/studio/etc can ask for a bigger cut. All about the money, always.

Why it never hurts--- Basically, fans of every kind have memories of goldfish. Mass global media since the beginning of time, cater to the lowest common denominator -mostly idiots. Yeah, you may have % of superfans, angry that Kayne has not dropped that album he promised in years, or that Tom Clancy's publisher put out tons of books penned under his name, with the constant promise of his next book- is just around the corner. Constant rumors of the 'next' Elders Scrolls game, because when it does finally come out, people forget whatever happened before.

Yeah, crying wolf constantly can get fans burnt out. OR worse, you promise one thing and deliver something totally different or underwhelming. Like final fantasy games that are not numbered, Crystal, Worlds, etc... that never seem to pick up fans. Still though, it doesn't really hurt. Because a 'fans', are usually the smallest % of consumers, paying customers, to make a product successful. Their rabid interest at the beginning is helpful in hyping a product, but ultimately you want the huge global market to get involved. Take Pokeman Go AR that made 8 billion, only a few were 'fans' the rest were new customers that got caught up in the sweeping fad. Fans are only useful for hyping up the larger mass consumers- whether they have a pos+ or neg- opinion.

Many of the publishers will produce a product riding the name of a successful brand. Like Gears of War tactic, clearly a separate game with a coating of gears. Same with the Midnight Suns, whose story could have been The Charmed sisters on WB/CW, then Marvel super heroes. But marvel heroes just sale better. Putting out a mediocre product time after time, is the worst though. But if you are a publisher, and things are looking rough.... they are going to wh0R3 that successful IPs name out, short term profits are more important than long term fans. Always.

As a consumer, all we can do is judge a product based off of its performance per $. I mean, I still get the itch every time a FF or dragon Quest comes out, but even though I wait for the reviews and never buy anything at launch.... the rest of the globe is just too dominate and buys whatever garbage comes out regardless.

But again, it never seems to hurt an IP announcing something early, a garbage game time after time, does water it down. Eventually.

They're not changing up an article series that gives them a crap ton of comments and views.

Besides you act like they don't have a point. Or, it's illegal to criticize anyting.

Only some games are announced too early; some (such as Actraiser Renaissance) aren't announced until the day they come out.

Game Studios make announcements as early as they possible because of pressure from investors always seeking new product, innovation, and most importantly, new revenue streams. That’s what keeps the dollars flowing, so don’t expect changes anytime soon.
