Gamescom Preview: What To Expect From Xbox, Game Announcements, And More | Spot On

Between Xbox's biggest booth ever, Opening Night Live, and the other booths on the show floor, there's plenty to be excited about.

It's our favorite time of the year and not just because temperatures are finally starting to cool down. It's Gamecom time, folks!

If the dozens of fantastic games launching over the course of the next few months weren't enough to look forward to, brace yourselves for a whole lot of announcements, reveals, and deep dives courtesy of the Germany-based video game trade show. In this episode of Spot On, Tam and Lucy discuss what games they are most excited to see on the show floor, as well as what they suspect Opening Night Live has in store for us. From Monster Hunter Wilds, Star Wars Outlaws, and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, to more niche titles like the aptly named Squirrel With A Gun, there's a lot to chat about and even more to get excited for. Here's a quick overview of the content you can expect to see from GameSpot in the coming weeks, as well as plenty of titles to add to your ever-growing "want to play" list.

Spot On is a weekly news show airing Fridays in which GameSpot's managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest news in games. Given the highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle of the massive video game industry, there's always something to talk about but, unlike most other news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic as opposed to recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

I wonder if Assassin s Creed Shadows or Zelda Echoes of Wisdom might be playable.

Or Metroid Prime 4, but maybe too early for a playable demo of Metroid Prime 4 now.

Civilization VII is something i personally look forward to. :) I played Civ V a lot (A LOT!) and some Civ VI more recently too.

" From Monster Hunter Wilds, Star Wars Outlaws, and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, to more niche titles like the aptly named Squirrel With A Gun, there's a lot to chat about and even more to get excited for. "

Two of the four games mentioned are made in Sweden. Outlaws is made in Malmö and Indiana Jones in Uppsala, i think. It is okay if you have not heard about the cities and only know about Stockholm.

Malmö is typically known for soccer, and a high crime rate. It is a small city compared to american cities (400 000 citizens or so) but with a very high share of immigrants compared to other nordic cities.

(We also have a city named Västerås, almost like the fictional Westeros from Game of Thrones.)

A couple of days ago I was actually thinking about Gamescom, and it hadn't even occurred to me that it's about that time again.

It's been probably close to a decade ago now, but I can remember a point there where it seemed like Gamescom would really become the successor to E3. It seemed like we were getting a lot of information from the event and it was something I looked forward to for a couple of years.

Nowadays, I'm still glad that Gamescom is around and kicking - especially after E3 shut down and a lot of the gaming expos aren't what they once were. I'm also someone who likes print media, so hearing that Game Informer shut down was kind of disappointing recently as well. Surely some gaming magazine can weather the storm and remain popular, and likewise some gaming expo.

But it's hard to worry or care as much as the years go on and I get older. And the industry has in large part moved away from these grandiose showings to do their own digital shows on their terms. Do you know how long it's been since the last time I actually thought about Gamescom? I think quite a few years, if I'm being honest.

I'm not saying one way or the other is better though. To me, they're all just events, whether they are digital or are presented at big expos. And hopefully great news comes out of this Gamescom just like any other event, that lots of people can look forward to.

@rewgle: Gamescom is more of an event for the public. My guess is they have an easier time getting the economy to work with all the regular gamer visitors who are not press, media or part of the gaming companies. Maybe Gamescom are able to charge less from game companies if they get more income from regular visitors.

I think E3 was closed for the public, and still i think over 100 000 visitors went there just from media and the companies. E3 was quite huge at its peak.

Sony and Nintendo skipping the event. Again. Not sure why they keep doing this. Any time a company has a chance to showcase their products, they should do so. Business 101. Even if they show nothing new, the Suits should make their presence mandatory. Not sure if its another case of Big Head Syndrome or the lack of enthusiasm for their latest State of Plays. Kind of like the huff they got into when they did what turned into their last E3 show. It was a bizarre show and whoever came up with the format and itinerary for that show needs to switch careers. Guys with bamboo hats, playing odd instruments. Making the entire audience get up and change venues to even more bizarre ones. They put all of their effort into the atmosphere of the showrooms and little thought into their showcase. Then they get got all uppity because people didn't love what they did and gave E3 the finger.

@bdrtfm: The whole business seem to be saving money right now, or most companies anyway. Maybe it is not the right time to spend a lot on events.

I think they reach their audience (both media and consumers) quite easily through the internet shows anyway. But actually trying out a new game or feeling a new game console or game pad..hard to do just online..They could release demos or send special demo discs just to media. But going to an event might achieve a bigger reach maybe..

And you never know about what could happen at an event. Small developers could try to reach out to big companies and show their products and try to gain more interest for them. They might even strike a deal or two. Maybe it is easier to "get a foot into the door" as an indie developer in an actual event.

@bdrtfm: To be fair Nintendo and Sony both do their own thing drawing in bigger crowds then the over rated e3. Xbox is dead, it's doin what it can for its last hurrah per say to try and stay in the game. They will make MAYBE 1 more console and then be a subscription only service that is junk in my eyes. I want to own what I pay for. That's why I still buy blu rays, books, and even cds. Xbox is in a panic mode and they are trying to cover it up by show casing their 1 maybe 2 exclusives and then adding the last few exclusives they have on nintendo and Sony products. because that way they get more sales. Xbox as a brand is hopefully and finally going away. Let it be the Netflix of games they are so proudly pushing for and let nintendo and Sony continue to succeed until another company comes along and makes a competitive console that is actually descent.

@mediastupid1: I think Xbox had the best "not E3" during summer. A lot more new interesting games from them than from Sony or Nintendo.

In short term and if you just look at games, Microsoft might have a nice year.

In a longer term..maybe they are a bit disappointed because they thought Call of Duty would get them the one big exclusive they needed to get more players to go from Playstation to Xbox. But they instead now needs to develop Call of Duty games even for Switch.

I think Xbox might stick around as a games console as well as a cloud streaming service and subscription. They are broadening their market but not getting out of consoles. and Xbox is arguably the console with best value for money too, if you are okay with playing games in 1440 p.

Game pass used to be very cheap but it is getting kind of expensive now. Especially the ultimate version.
