GameSpot And CNET Discuss The Future Of Games At CES 2021

After a massive 2020 for games, can the industry sustain and grow the momentum?

2020 was a gigantic year for gaming. Due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic that kept people in their homes, the time and money spent on gaming grew dramatically. A recent NPD study said four out of five consumers in the US played a video game in the last six months, propelling the industry to new heights in terms of total players and time/money spent on the activity.

But just how much did the industry grow in 2020, and can the gaming industry sustain the momentum and keep growing? These are some of the questions that GameSpot and sister CNET will discuss during a virtual panel at CES 2021 later this month as part of CNET's Thought Leadership Panels.

Panelists include GameSpot's own Lucy James; NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, who has been at the forefront of analyzing data and releasing reports about the health of the US game industry, along with Among Us developer Victoria Tran; video game journalist and co-founder/host of Kinda Funny, Greg Miller, will also appear on the panel to share his thoughts and insights.

You can watch the panel on January 12 at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET. The event will stream on CNET and on CNET's YouTube channel.

For more on CES 2021, which is taking place virtually this year due to the health crisis, head to CNET to see their list of top six trends to expect.

The gaming industry has shown an 8% + year over year over decades growth since the 80s. It has went through a death of video games, the end of the arcades, the personal home computer, the internet, Sept 11, online gaming, social media, mobile, 2007 world wide recession, motion control fad, continued wars, Brexit, and a WW pandemic. But as steady as the flow of time the video gaming industry just keeps on going. Like the printed word, radio, tv, and democracy - it is too late to put gaming back in the bottle.

While it may spike and dip, and ebb and flow with generational consoles, the path is always rising over time. Video gaming is less about a kids past time, with acne faced kids rabidly pressing buttons on an arcade machine, it is a valid art form, a way of human kind to express themselves through shape, sound, and story. Will gaming continue its momentum ... of course, maybe not as fast as this WW pandemic has allowed, but it will continue. Because just like a moving book, or a fearful story, or music played from an instrument, gaming evokes emotions like any great form we as a species have felt or known.

Here watch this: leigh xp, FF7 R play YouTube. See this girl's visceral heartfelt reaction to this scene, one that I felt way back in 97' and now a whole new generation, gets to experience and enjoy.
