GameSpot GamePlay Episode 47: Floaty Butt

Developer Mike Bithell joins Kevin, Carolyn, and Tom to show new GameSpotter Walter Lopez the ropes. Or in this case, the barbed wire.

Is Don Mattrick the savior Zynga needed? Will Thomas as Alone developer Mike Bithell drop hints about his upcoming project? Is Tom Mc Shea more than host Kevin VanOrd can handle? All these questions and more are asked, but not necessarily answered, in this week's podcast.

Also, new GameSpotter Walter Lopez gives away a special prize (you have to listen to find out what it is and how to win!), and Carolyn Petit wards our English guest from Kevin's clearly Amero-centric point of view. Explosions! Guns! Flags! Wieners! It's an Independence Day tradition to alienate the British.

I agree with Tom on Assassin's Creed. The combat is extremely boring to me and just feels like quick time events without the cue.

Just finished listening to the podcast on my way to class. I always listen on my half hour drive to school and it often lasts me a day or two depending on traffic. I had to make myself not listen while sitting at home so I can have more enjoyable drives. Really gets my day off to a good start.

Loved Thomas Was Alone and played through it in one sitting and recommend it to anyone that would enjoy it.

It was great having Mike on the show, especially since I played and loved Thomas Was Alone since the last time he was on.

And if Tom wanted insightful comments this week, how about "This new Ryan Davis-less world effing blows."

I don't get the hype around the Division too. The core gameplay mechanic seems very similar (if not identical) to the one from Ghost Recon: Future Soldier which was a horrible nightmare.

I love this show when you guys have developers on. It is great to get perspectives from both journalists and developers; the conversations seem to be more expansive. Unrelated, but I'd like to request a Shaun McInnis appearance if possible. And while I'm requesting things, what about having Tom Magrino on as a guest?

Tom,, when you move in make sure you empty all those cardboard boxes asap, I didn't and had 4 or 5 for almost 10 years in cupboards and the loft.

Somehow I associate the relationship between Kevin and Tom to that of an elementary school teacher and his student. Which means that it's actually one of my favorite things about the show!

I think the explosion sound track quiz would have been easier if Kevin also gave the quotes in the review/article that contained the word explosion. I liked the idea, but honestly there are way too many games with explosions, surprise surprise.

I am also ambivalent to the integrated multiplayer in single player idea. It is interesting, but I enjoy playing by myself. Well, it will ultimately all come down to execution and I'm keeping an eye on how they will turn out in the upcoming batch of games. But yeah, not too excited.

I have to agree with Tom and his opinion on AC. The combat is terrible and the platforming is way to easy. So glad that someone else realizes that.

@slikjohnson I've been waiting for them to revamp the core mechanics since I finished (and enoyed) AC2. Sadly, it seems they're stuck doing the auto-play formula until the sales drop off.

@TomMcShea @slikjohnson Well I love AC series not for the gameplay though, to me it's more of interactive museum(not historical though) than a game, so I always play the damn game myself rather than watch the videoes.

It's not a big deal, but just to correct a little example that Kevin gave . Actually the multiplayer component of Killzone coast 14.99, I don't see a point buying this since the full game, multiplayer and single player, coast 20.00.

The multiplayer that's free to play is from Uncharted 3.

Didn't Demon Souls do persistent online/integrated online thing before Journey? - also with those - not too much is lost if you go offline. Is there any game that has integrated online/solo campaign before Dark Souls? Would be interested to know!

@DarkFrankhs The difference between Journey and Demon's Souls (there's only one difference!) is that multiplayer happens organically in Journey whereas you access it through deliberate actions in the Souls games.

hahahaha Tom cracks me up with his harsh comments and negative attitude sometimes

Kevin: Assassin's creed 1 was great on it's own terms and then they turned that into a fantastic series...

Tom: And then they dropped it off a cliff and spat on it...

@Sun-Tzu-GE Funny part about those comments is they are both right. Kevin wears rose colored glasses when it comes to that franchise though. I look at that game like I look at LOST. The writers say they have the whole thing plotted out, but really it's just a sketch. If you were just to play only the Desmond parts from the whole series, it becomes a convoluted mess at the end of Brotherhood with zero to little discernible direction and even murkier ending. It was terribly disappointing to me since the REAL story was supposed to be Desmond's tale.

@jazilla @Sun-Tzu-GE That's exactly what I've been saying last year.I think the whole thing went to shit after Patrice Désilets left Ubisoft. And after he was replaced by someone else...Let's just say that it was like bringing a sitcom writer to finish George R. R. Martin's book.

Tom, I actually like Dead or Alive for its gameplay, *in spite of* of all the fanservice that Team Ninja is so known for. Heck, my favorite character is Gen-Fu, who is about as unsexy as they come in that game (unless stocky old guys turn you on). Anyway, there's a good fighter underneath it all.

Another good podcast overall. Mike Bithell was great (again). Only one thing: the ESRB ratings description theatre? Eh... not so much. It was sort of fun when people actually did voices, but at this point it's pretty much just boring. On the other hand, you can never have enough metacritic over-and-under... that's always a good jumping-off point for discussing multiple perspectives on a game, obviously, which is usually good fun.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and of course the Dark Souls Appreciation Hour is always good! :-)

Is Tom ready to start a Dark Souls religion yet? Sounds like he's getting there. I'd join.

@AtheistPreacher Yeah, I might have been too hard on DoA. It does have that fancy counter system. Still, the franchise just revels in gratuitous sexism. Shame.

Oh, and I wouldn't create a Dark Souls religion. Rather, it would be a covenant.

Floatbutt? Never heard that term before and yet this episode did cover some good topics. Thomas Jefferson is a dirt man because he took the credit for the filter in the light bulb when in fact it was his assistant created it. His assistant was black so that's why Jefferson was acknowledged as it's creator. So great job guys, see you next time :)

Ohhh so it's US only for the contest, eh? I guess your not getting your insightful comment this week. Although it was a great show, keep it up! Also don't feel bad about Quebec, they get left out of all national contests, but they have so many more perks of their own.

Kevin really enjoyed making up words this time around. Irregardless, I think the whole idea of always online games has a lot of potential. I agree Dark/Demon Souls does a good job of incorporating it into the single player, but I think that a lot more can be done. I'm really looking forward to The Division and Destiny. They look like Borderlands with better gameplay, and Borderlands was always better playing with another so I think they show great promise. That being said, I don't think people should be punished for wanting to play alone. As long as everything scales accordingly, I don't see why a single player/multiplayer universe cannot coexist.
