GameStop Announces Losses Of $673 Million, But Believes Its Future Is Bright

Here's a look at how GameStop is doing these days.

Video game retailer GameStop has reported earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter and fiscal full year, and the results are not pretty. Before getting into the numbers, it's important to note that GameStop's fiscal Q4 and fiscal full year were one week shorter (13 weeks in the quarter compared to 14 and 52 weeks in the year compared to 53) than the previous year due to the way in which GameStop collected its numbers and data last year. As a result, GameStop's sales numbers were likely to take at least a small hit in part to having one fewer week of sales.

With that out of the way, GameStop announced fourth quarter sales of $3.1 billion, which is a decrease of 7.6 percent. The key contributors to the downturn in sales were a tough comparison to an extra week last year and the timing of the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. While there was an overall decrease in sales for the quarter, US store sales rose 3.4 percent while international stores saw revenue decrease by 2.9 percent.

Now Playing: Next-Gen Console Reveals Coming Soon, Predicts GameStop - GS News Update

New hardware sales dropped 9.8 percent in the quarter. The Nintendo Switch was a bright spot, helping offset the decline in Xbox One X sales. That was always going to be a tough comparison for Xbox One X given it launched during the previous fiscal year, and consoles typically have huge opening numbers and then taper off. New software sales for GameStop in the quarter dropped by 7.8 percent, while pre-owned sales fell further, by 21.3 percent. In terms of growing businesses, GameStop's accessories sales rose 18.8 percent (thanks to controllers and headsets), digital sales rose 4.7 percent (thanks to digital currency), and collectibles sales jumped 3.1 percent.

Overall, GameStop posted a loss of $187.7 million for the quarter, which is worse than the $105.9 million loss that GameStop recorded during the same quarter a year earlier.

Moving to the full year, GameStop's total global sales reached $8.3 billion, which is a decrease of 3.1 percent. US store sales increased 1.8 percent while international sales dropped 4.8 percent.

Looking at GameStop's various business units, it was a mixed bag for the full year. New hardware sales fell 1.3 percent, while new software sales dropped 5.1 percent. Pre-owned sales fell 13.2 percent. On the better side, accessories sales jumped 22 percent, collectibles sales rose 11.2 percent, and digital sales increased 16.5 percent.

GameStop overall posted a net loss of $673 million for the full year. That was due in part to "asset impairment charges" of $964.2 million that were "primarily related to impairment of goodwill."

Despite the difficult fourth quarter and full fiscal year, GameStop executive chairman Dan DeMatteo said in a statement that the company expects to grow in the future under the leadership of its new CEO, George Sherman.

"We are excited to move forward under George's leadership as we refine our strategic direction and implement several initiatives under development to strengthen the company for the future and drive sustainable growth and profitability," DeMatteo said.

GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said in his own statement that the company recognises "the challenges facing our pre-owned video game business."

GameStop says it will address these issues in several ways as part of its overall ambition to save costs and improve profit. Some of the ways GameStop plans to save money in the new fiscal year is to focus on "supply chain efficiencies, operational improvements, expense savings, and pricing and promotion optimization."

"GameStop is a leader in the video game industry, and we remain committed to capitalizing on our leadership position to discover new and unique ways to meet our loyal customers' entertainment needs and attract new customers," he said.

Blockbuster. Hollywood Video.

I went into a Gamestop for the first time in a while last week looking for a game. As always, they had zero copies, and suggested I should have preordered. I went online and easily bought it, and it was shipped to my door.

A video game store that doesn't sell video games is dead in the water.

The writing been on the wall for awhile I hope those who rely on Gamestop to keep food on the table made plans cuz the first step in their "Bright Future" is to start closing more stores.

So if you made any money last year, even if you bent over to pick up a penny off the sidewalk, you made more money than the entire corporation of Gamestop. Go you!!

@fud_sang: ahh cheapo peasant is angry that Gamestop charges a premium to save him from trading at garbage titles they will likely never resell... Instead of doing it himself on Craigslist, Ebay or Amazon.. then he wants to complain because gamestop charges the premium.. GTFO ..

@OrgeLambart: Yeah i got enough cash so I don't need to trade games for other games like the rest of the masses who get screwed out of 50% of what they paid for every time. To be fair I do trade consoles when the new gens land (the alternative is consoles collecting dust lets be real) but other than that I think its a giant con. I'm more looking it at from a devs perspective. No need to pay the middle man if they don't exist. The more hands that touch that product before you get it the more it costs. They don't really need them anymore. Probably why their losing money every year.

Who uses craigslist where are you...2005? Who calls someone a peasant? Its not 1400AD. Some people are so behind in the race they actually think their ahead of the game.

Gamestop has a habit of ripping off their customers. They tried to sell me an opened copy of a game for full price. I got the same game brand new from best buy. Gamestop has forever lost my business.

@darklordvyperx: yeah they do that crap all the time.. selling an opened copy of the game as new.. like, if it's new I'd break the seal on my own.. I don't need you to do it for me.. Then again, I bought like 2 or 3 games over the years that didn't have a CD inside, and had to answer lots of questions when I asked for my refund.. I can only imagine how many times that happens with the hundreds of thousands of games Gamestop sells per year..

@OrgeLambart: They once tried to sell me a game for full price that they didn't even have a case for. It was in a CD sleeve. I was like "Are you stupid?"

Their used sales are probably down due to 2 reasons. 1) Low trade-in values are causing stores to have limited or no stock of games and consoles. 2) No one is wanting to pay those prices for a game in one of their generic cases when you can usually find complete copies online for nearly the same price.

As for hardware sales, I know from experience that they were losing customers that last quarter. Just trying to find a new PS4 was a pain in the butt as no Gamestop store had any new or used PS4 systems. That drove customers like me to find them at other stores like Best Buy. Some stores still are having trouble keeping systems in stock.

@supermariomelee: hardware sales are down because the systems are older, typically when the systems are newer they'll sell more... Most people who want a console already have it, and the only reason to buy another is if it breaks or gets stolen..

As for used sales,, you're likely right, more people are selling their used games on Craigslist/Ebay and Amazon, for those extra dollars, rather then using Gamestop and getting shafted..

They are going to be ok? So why they desperately tried to sell Gamestop? With their terrible trading mechanics, terrible employees and costumer management, people getting to the digital side day by day and Sony cutting of digital content from retailers, they are going downfall pretty quickly, soon they will find the same fate as Blockbuster.

I honestly believe that Gamestop's biggest downfall was not selling retro games in store. Nowadays gamestop feels more like a psychical online store more than a getaway for gamers. They should also hold more gaming competitions (with retro and new games) to build a strong community. Honestly whats the difference between Gamestop and the game section at walmart?

@camou504: And they used to hold local tourneys and it was a decent spot once upon a time. Now its like walking into a giant retail commercial. Half the local staff here couldn't tell you what retro gaming is outside of nintendo and a bit of Sega.

@camou504: It doesn't help that they're cutting back on their retro section too. They've slowly cutting back on their Dreamcast, Saturn and original Xbox sections. To the point that they're not taking Saturn or Xbox consoles anymore and are not taking in over half of the games that they originally did when they started accepting them again.

@camou504: it's down fall was not improving their services and offerings when digital was coming around. Only now they are starting to. Also a lot of people left it when Amazon and best buy allowed you to buy new games for 20% off with $10 preorder certificates on top but since that is over gamestop can save themselves if they offer something similar.

@ballashotcaller: Those are both loss-leader strategies. They gain market share but at severe cost -- to the point where the company is working for free, and just hoping you'll buy something else which actually has a profit margin. A company losing 700 million/year can't go that route.

I really agree with @camou504. "Gamestop" should live up to its name and become a gaming destination. Generally speaking, the only way to pay for brick & mortar now is to offer something online stores can't.

@Lamesy: The only thing they could possibly offer that online stores cannot is cheaper prices and exclusive goods. Gamestop has never had cheaper prices and good luck getting physical and digital exclusivity for new releases.

@neurogia: No, they can't offer cheaper prices than online stores. That's not numerically possible. What they can offer is use of a public, physical space. They could (but don't, at least regularly) offer employees who are gaming/nerd culture specialists. In-store events. Use the limited inventory space to encourage strong curation. Physical stores need to present some compelling "experience."

@spectrexr1: They wouldn't be able to make that work. To be fair, if you buy a game NEW it's $59.99, if you were to take the game back to them and resale it to them (usually the first week or month of release) You'll get typically $30 (half) then, as you said, its places back on the shelf for $55. Its totally sucks they cut you by half, right out the gate, but WE ALL have to understand, that they have employees to pay, leases on buildings, lights ect. So if they were to give us more, they would be even further in debt then $650M+ and in past years, it hasn't been better for them. Regardless thats a "them" problem, not ours.

They've expanded so much over the years, they can't afford to keep up with the number of stores and employees they have. Now with their business model failing year after year, and the rise of the unfortunate (IMO) "digital era" the first step should be store closures and employee layoffs. It would cut expenses significantly, especially if they trimmed down to a mere fraction of their current, open stores... It would help keep their head above water for a while longer, but eventually (like the titanic) their going to sink.

Personally, they have ripped off and lied to you and me for years... F them. Do what i do... Any console game thats a must have, that you just can't wait for a sale, and have to have it on release... Buy it from a retailer (NOT gamestop) at their "midnight launch" (if whoever is having one) or just find a retailer that offers release date delivery (sometimes its even free) try the game anywhere from a week to a month (depending on the popularity of the game) then, resale it on ebay. I can normally buy a game for $59.99, play it for a month, then resale on ebay for $40-$50 shipped (including fees) again, the game matters... CoD, battlefield (usually) any new rockstar games ect. Best resale values... poorly reviewed, shit games (like fallout 76 imo) its better to go to gamestop lol.

No need to mention pc games... Those gamers have the best end of the stick on nearly everything lol.

@j3diknightdave: people ignore the fact that Gamestop takes pretty much any game, so that dud that nobody wants, Gamestop still takes it.. Like that new game you purchased that sucked and getting horrible reviews... In the first week or month they are still giving you 30 dollars for it.. While odds are they won't sell that game at the price they listed it, and ultimately will wind up taking a loss on it..

It happens all the time with garbage games, people buy them... hate them... return them.... Gamestop eats the loss and has hundreds of thousands of copies of a game that they'll sell if they dramatically discount it.. even then they probably still won't..
