GameStop rakes in $7.1B in '07

Record-breaking financials marked by dramatic 46 percent profit rise during holiday quarter; megaretailer credits Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and Rock Band.

Last month, AdWeek magazine revealed that GameStop, the world's biggest specialty retailer of games, had been successfully marketing games via its in-store television network. Today, the Texas-based retailer's annual earnings report revealed it successfully sold plenty of other games as well.

For its 2007 financial year, which ended February 2, 2008, GameStop revenues increased 33 percent to hit a massive $7.1 billion total. After debt retirement costs of $12.6 million, the company's net earnings--aka profit--for the 52-week period were $288.3 million. The retailer is enjoying a year-end cash balance of $857 million despite having had opened 586 stores worldwide during the period.

For the most recent quarter, GameStop reported net earnings of $189.8 million (up 46 percent) on revenue of nearly $2.9 billion (up 24.4 percent). One of the main reasons for the retail chain's successful holiday quarter was last year's bumper crop of top-shelf games. GameStop singled out five in particular as being best-sellers: Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and Rock Band. The company also cited its highly profitable used game business as a key revenue driver.

Console sales were also a big factor in GameStop's banner 2007 fiscal year. "What is particularly noteworthy is that 2007 was a transformative year with hardware sales setting records and the installed base of users reaching an all-time high," declared CEO R. Richard Fontaine in a statement. "Likewise, the expanding demographic profile of the video game player has moved this business into the mainstream of entertainment."

Looking ahead to the current fiscal year, which ends on January 31, 2009, GameStop's guidance is positive. The company predicts revenue growth of between 19 and 21 percent for the year, with sales rising 24 to 25 percent in the first fiscal quarter thanks to the releases of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Devil May Cry 4, and the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV. The company expects to open another 575 to 600 stories during the 52-week reporting period.

Gamestop used to be the coolest, But Corporate take over has ruined their fairness. If you buy from them at whole sale price your a crack head. Online buying is the way for those sorta things.

I buy my games on ebay. yeah yeah i don't get it at the same day i have to wait for a week, But i get it, and for more then half price from gamestop. Now you go to gamespot and you see new release for 60+tax dollars. and game that are use and old, I'm talking about 3 years old games that been a hit still for 50dollars. That why I stop shopping there and turn to ebay. i bought 3 xbox 360 games for less then one of them that cost in gamestop store, And I'm saying even paying for shipping it still less then gamstop. My advice is to buy games from ebay and stop wasting money on gamestop. and sell you games on ebay and never take them to trade in. they totally rob you, you pay 40dollar for a game and they come and give you 10, then sell for 35, come on. you will get more money on ebay or in the street then gamestop.

I pretty much stopped doing any game shopping at GameStop last year as my local store doesn't carry many PC games. Yes, I know many games are now downloadable but I still like the CD (or rather CD-DVD) in hand. I now only buy games at Best Buy or Wal-mart as they at least sell both PC and console.

mrtweed2, dude, I used to live in Aurora, CO untill like 3 months ago. Play n Trade was awesome. The people that work at the Gamestop there are also the best I've even gotten to know. All my friends went there usually to talk game with the employees or the manager. The manager also named his son after an anime character... I'd tell you all, but that would be impersonal... bringing it up is rude enough, just wanted to let you all know how comfortable they all were when working with us. Hell, one time my best friend and I got to stay after hours and talk with this one employee for like an hour and a half past closing time, and then he let us take one of the cardboard props. It was an Armored Core 4 thing, and wasn't that big, but my friend is a huge AC fan. Other than that one Gamestop, most of the time the employees try to act "professional" and try not to socialize too much with customers... which is a real bummer, because now I'm bored as hell whenever I go... Also, I live in Tennessee now, and there are literally 3 Gamestops within half a mile of one another... I don't mean they're half a mile apart, I mean they are all literally within the same half mile. One's inside a mall, the other two are literally just outside the mall in plaza's that are a 30 second walk away... rediculous.

i, for one, find it kind of ridiculous that they didnt mention halo3 as one of their big games. but what else do you expect from that rip off of a place. but seriously, how could halo3 NOT have been one of their biggest money makers?

I have shopped at GameStop for many years and spent thousands of dollars. Their trade-in value has a lot to be desired, but the employees usually go out of their way to help and the location near my home in s.e. aurora, co knows what games I like and suggests titles that interest me. Recently I visited a Play-n-Trade, and I must say I was pretty impressed...but that's another story.

I find it improbable that a majority of Gamestops income was due to few top ten game releases. I think it is obviously attributable To the used games they sell that they make a 100% profit on due to no laws being in place that would give the developers of said games a percentage of the used game sales.

Think about all of the games that you have bought from GameStop and you were thoroughly satisfied with either because it was traded in as mint and complete and you reaped the benefits, it was getting rare but you got it for dirt cheap GameStop standard price, or you were able to exploit a coupon or promo and got a brand new game for a fraction of the MSRP. All of a sudden, they aren't as evil as we think. GameStop basically is just a marketplace for people to exchange games. We are just paying for a service fee just like eBay seller fees. GameStop doesn't keep its games, they don't want to keep the games because selling is their intention. They take in our games, tag it, and resell it - that's it. If the games are not moving well, corporate lowers the price NATIONALLY. If you think about it hard, it's actually the independent stores that are evil :p. They research and know what games are rare, when there is an interest spike, and once they get a hold of a good game, their intention is to hold on to the game at the highest possible price until someone buys it, even if it takes 5-10 years. Hope I made you think...mwa hahahahahhah!

Gamestop is a god send for me, cuz i have plenty used to have plenty of games collecting nothing but dust. I do think they rip you off on the trade ins, some of my local businessmen are opening up their own gaming stores that are less stress shopping and they actually hire gamers to work not just idiotic adolescent kids that don't know their stuff.

To people complaining about them not getting much money for their games, theres a reason...usually people STEAL games and movies from other stores (Yes. It is possible to steal videogames from Walmart and other stores like that) and just trade them in to get quick cash. Which is one of the main reasons gamestop only gives people credit for DVDs. But i have a proper solution for people who want money... Its called a Job. With a Job you can get a Girlfriend, a House, Food and cloths.

Typical employee at GameStop when making a game purchase. "Hey, you want to reserve Halo 4..? If you don't, you won't get it man" "What about a strategy guide for the game?" "Hey, you want a $1.99 protection plan on your game?" Best Buy > GameStop

you'd think halo 3, with all the money it made, would have been a major seller for them as well. I'm surprised they didn't mention that as one of their best sellers.

HAHAHA omg another 600 stores. That is crazy 288 miillion in revenue from 7 billion in sales I dunno if i'm using the correct terms but dang thats some overhead haha. Just shows how much the publishers charge, i'm glad they make all the money from the sales and not gamestop. No wonder they push service and trade ins.( well i always knew hehe its jut these numbers are stagering) Personaly i see more value in keeping my games rather then trading them in for 5 bucks a pop. Its cool the amount of growth its showing though, you think how many more people are buying all 3 consoles, plus the ps2 plus ds(well thats the biggest mover) the install base is huge.

That shows how good the gaming industry is doing because GameStop is pretty much the biggest(as in most stores and success) game store and it includes everything the game industry promotes. That is a pretty goo feat they accomplished, but I have to say, everyone wanting a game usually goes to GameStop, but the thing is,there are other stores with other deals. My friend wanted RockBand and went and bought it at GameStop without thinking for 170 bucks. At Target,it was on sale for a month including that day for 150,and I knew. All he had to do was either ask me or look around online.I never bought a 360 game at 60 bucks and I bought all of the games within their first 1 or 2 months and I just look around. So do the same,I also recommend permanent discount membership stores like Sam's and Costco because it's the same story there.GameStop doesn't have sales like that...I only use GameStop for accessories, used games, and items that are out of stock elsewhere.

People do need to get over the trade in value at Gamestop. The most annoying thing is how pushy they are in sales and service plans. Trade in values are never good when you trade to a retail entity that 1. Purchases regardless of need. 2. Assumes the risk it may not sell. 3. Warranties the product. That is just how "trade for resale" works. When you sell directly to someone who wants exactly what your selling and will use it immediately you get closer to top dollar.

Only thing gamestop really helped me out with in 2007 was finding a Wii. Reserved it there and they told me I'd have one within a month, and about 3 weeks later I got the call. They're surprisingly reliable when it comes to those kinds of things.

GameStop? Raking in the dough? Who would've thought? Seriously, though, I love GameStop. I mean, they do sell video games. Always a plus. They've recently opened a movie retail store near me called MovieStop, and I hope they expand on this chain, as the store is fantastic. You can get new movies really cheap (ex. "American Gangster" two-disc unrated DVD is only $13), and they have tons of hard-to-get foreign, anime, and classic DVDs, as well as great deals on used DVDs (I bought "A History of Violence" for free as a result of a buy two, get one free deal).

For older used games and DVD's, they are worth it. But I've started going to Blockbuster to trade-in games because they give me at least $10-$15 over what Gamestop does, and they mark their newer used games lower. That, and I will NEVER forget the idiot in Gamestop who told me that F.E.A.R. was a much better game than Gears of War. But most of the employees I run into actually know somethings about games which is a good sign. They could still pay their employees much better though.

GameStop is my #1 choice when it comes to buying or reserving new games. However, the only aspect of the store that bothered me was when they stopped stocking used NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, N64, etc. games. To tell you the truth, those used games are what originally attracted me to this retailer. Oh well, at least they still stock used Game Boy games. In fact, I just bought a used "Mario Vs. Donkey Kong" game for $20 yesterday. What a deal!

Oh my God, someone is making money. They must be evil because anyone that has more money than you do is CLEARLY some sort of monster and anything you can't afford MUST be a ripoff. Hey, on the trade in side of things, be glad you get anything at all for used games. Every game I ever bought for my PC and finished with is just sitting in a box somewhere. It costs a lot of overhead to keep retail stores open and there's no guarantee as a retailer you are going to sell those used games so you gamers looking to get rid of them are not going to get top dollar for them any more than you would selling a used car or your funky used clothes. Which reminds me - the way most people treat discs, you should thank God anybody wants your scratched up junk in the first place even if they DO play. The whiners should chill and be glad you even HAVE a place to sell them. If getting twelve bucks for your crappy zillion year old copy of Splinter Cell is the worst thing that happens to you today then God Bless America. Burton Out.

HeinzKatchup Hey guys, I work for a gamestop. Some of you know what ur tlking about. But some of you do not. First of all, for those of you who think gamesop is run by the owners, it is not. It is run by corporate. Also the trade in values. Although they may seem bad, they are reasonable. Think of it as a used car dealership your obviously going to get less and then we sell it for more. It's how we make our money! It's called business. Now i agree Gamestop has issues with giving jobs. The best thing to do, if you want a job, is to get to know people there (especially the manager). Let him know your name. Then after a few months of just dropping in for a purchase and just saying hi. Boom! the job will be yours. That's how I got it, and i love it there. Also, No playing games on the job Trust Me! its not allowed youmay think it is but its not! Have a good Day Guys ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Where I live in Florida the Gamestop near me their employees play video games. The trade in value is a rip off at gamestop and you know it. $60 games 2 weeks later you give the person like $20 for a $60 that looks NEW and sell for $54 thats a big difference. That to me is a rip off and bad business. Why me and many others rather sell online you get more then Gamestop gives you. Then another thing that pisses me off is how on the receipt it states you have 30 days to RETURN accessories open or not for a full refund. Yet you call gamestop to ask they will tell you that you cannot return accessories once open. What is up with that?
