GameStop rakes in $7.1B in '07

Record-breaking financials marked by dramatic 46 percent profit rise during holiday quarter; megaretailer credits Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and Rock Band.

Last month, AdWeek magazine revealed that GameStop, the world's biggest specialty retailer of games, had been successfully marketing games via its in-store television network. Today, the Texas-based retailer's annual earnings report revealed it successfully sold plenty of other games as well.

For its 2007 financial year, which ended February 2, 2008, GameStop revenues increased 33 percent to hit a massive $7.1 billion total. After debt retirement costs of $12.6 million, the company's net earnings--aka profit--for the 52-week period were $288.3 million. The retailer is enjoying a year-end cash balance of $857 million despite having had opened 586 stores worldwide during the period.

For the most recent quarter, GameStop reported net earnings of $189.8 million (up 46 percent) on revenue of nearly $2.9 billion (up 24.4 percent). One of the main reasons for the retail chain's successful holiday quarter was last year's bumper crop of top-shelf games. GameStop singled out five in particular as being best-sellers: Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and Rock Band. The company also cited its highly profitable used game business as a key revenue driver.

Console sales were also a big factor in GameStop's banner 2007 fiscal year. "What is particularly noteworthy is that 2007 was a transformative year with hardware sales setting records and the installed base of users reaching an all-time high," declared CEO R. Richard Fontaine in a statement. "Likewise, the expanding demographic profile of the video game player has moved this business into the mainstream of entertainment."

Looking ahead to the current fiscal year, which ends on January 31, 2009, GameStop's guidance is positive. The company predicts revenue growth of between 19 and 21 percent for the year, with sales rising 24 to 25 percent in the first fiscal quarter thanks to the releases of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Devil May Cry 4, and the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV. The company expects to open another 575 to 600 stories during the 52-week reporting period.

Good for them. I hate preorders! I buy newly released games elsewhere. But I do buy used games from Gamestop.

Hey guys, I work for a gamestop. Some of you know what ur tlking about. But some of you do not. First of all, for those of you who think gamesop is run by the owners, it is not. It is run by corporate. Also the trade in values. Although they may seem bad, they are reasonable. Think of it as a used car dealership your obviously going to get less and then we sell it for more. It's how we make our money! It's called business. Now i agree Gamestop has issues with giving jobs. The best thing to do, if you want a job, is to get to know people there (especially the manager). Let him know your name. Then after a few months of just dropping in for a purchase and just saying hi. Boom! the job will be yours. That's how I got it, and i love it there. Also, No playing games on the job Trust Me! its not allowed youmay think it is but its not! Have a good Day Guys

Here's the problem. I myself complained about Gamestop's terrible trade-in value policy and high-priced used game sales. You know what I did to show I hated it? Stopped buying from them. I don't trade games in there EVER. I don't buy used games from them unless it is an older game and $20 or less. I don't believe in this "let's sell a new game for $55" stuff. However, it's not Gamestop's fault, it's YOUR fault, the consumer. If people wouldn't bring a brand new game in a week later, accept $30 or less for it and if people wouldn't buy a used game for $55, Gamestop wouldn't be able to continue this way. However, people are doing just this and this is why Gamestop has such a high profit, even in a recession.

"Console sales were also a big factor in GameStop's banner 2007 fiscal year." Ya, forcing people to buy their ridiculous bundles or they can't have a launch console. Hate 'em.

I'm actually happy for Gamestop. I've never really had an issue with them. Well except they didn't hire me. =P But that's neither here nor there. I shop there constantly. Mostly because they are conveniently located to where I work. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable (Unlike the people at Fry's Electronics to whom I once went into their computer department looking for a computer that they advertised with a Blu Ray HD combo drive and when I showed the ad to the person, which said "BD/HD DVD Combo drive" his response was "O.o Blu Ray? Is that what BD means?" and he proceeded to go ask about 10 other people while I just stood there shaking my head) and the selection is fantastic. Prices are.... well standard. I don't buy used games. But I will agree with the general consensus. They give you basically pocket change for trade in games. UNLESS you go in with a coupon.

Ok. To all the Halo fanboys here, they were talking specifically about the holiday quarter. Halo had already been out for half a month, so the big 'burst' of sales was over. But the games that came out during the last quarter, the sales would include that burst of sales when a game is released.

I never had any problems with Gamestop except the fact that they barely give you any money for used games.

Good for gamestop. I personally like Disc Replay more but it is farther from my house. They might not give you that good of prices for trade in values and they don't reduce their prices enough or fast enough, but they sell used video games and I mostly buy used. And if you wait you can get games for cheap and take advantage of coupons or trade in deals.

this is the number one reason why i use gamefly for all my needs for 40 bucks a month i can play 4 games at any given time and if i wish to purchase it i usually save anywhere from 15 -30 bucks off retail for a game if i want it for my libary. now that is how to buy a used game at least 25-50 percent off retail... well worth the price of admission each month...

I want to know where they are going to put 600 more stores. After taking over EB there is already a flood of them. The Century 3 mall right outside of Pittsburgh has two gamestops in it for crying out loud. The town where I went to college has two gamestops less than mile away from each other. Gamestop = the Starbucks of video games. @nappan What antitrust violations are they guilty of? The last time I checked Walmart, K-mart, Target, Fry's, Gamecrazy, Blockbuster, etc etc still sell video games...

Stole a game from Walmart? Need a place to dump it? Try GameStop! Thanks, GameStop, for gutting games & thus voiding your own warranty. Also, thanks for putting a big knife-slash through the cover of a new game that I just HAD to have that day (COD4 PS3).

What a testament to Gamestop's relentless gouging of the consumer, shameless pandering to marketing interests, and of course patently insane antitrust violations. *sigh*

If you want an alternative for your trade-ins, try playntrade.com - franchises are opening up all over the country. They give you credit according to amazon.com prices and most of their stuff are complete. I got $35 credit for my mint/complete Zelda 64 Ocarina Collector's. That's more than I can say for eBay. The stores are actually run by the owners (not corporate) so if you have a problem, they are one same area code phone call away.

3.2 Billion is from over priced used games and from ripping off young kids from thier hard earned allownce monies and used games that they paid 50 - 60 bucks for and then giving them 18 to 25 bucks back after they finished the game to resell them for a discount of 5 bucks of new retail to us fools trying to save a buck........Gamestop is the second Microsoft of this generation.....

Gamestop is such a double-edged sword. They're great in the aspect that they carry a great selection of old/used games and they consistently get games on the actual release date, faster than retailers. However, gamers trading in games usually get shafted with low-ball trade-in value while they sell the game for a pricey $55 thereafter. I personally prefer Circuit City for new games as I have a Gamer Saver's Card that gives me 10% off and I prefer used games from my local Disc Replay that charges $45 or less for used games.

my only problem with gamestop has been that i've bought a used game that wouldn't even load up which proves to me they hardly check to see if brought in games work, and that the release date they show online is just the shipping date and not the actual day that a game is in the store.

Love them or hate them, Gamestop has really capitalized on an exploding industry by having a great business plan. While I don't personally shop there (I either buy new things at Best Buy or older stuff online), the fact that they can increase their stock by another 600 stores is incredible. I do wonder how long this industry boom will continue because these things are generally cyclical and eventually the casual players are going to get bored and move on, but I digress of course.

yeah they make money off of new releases; but, truth be told, they make the lions share of their money in the secondary market. everybody knows that. gamestop/eb sells used games at 3 times the price they buy them from gamers. at those margins they should never have a bad year.
