GC 2008: FIFA 09 Hands-On

EA Sports announced a host of new features for FIFA 09 at the Games Convention, and invited us down for a play of the brand-new build.

While FIFA 09 was never short on new features, modes, and gameplay tweaks, EA Sports used Leipzig to firm up even more additions to the game. The biggest is probably the Adidas Live Season--a weekly update that will keep all player data in the game bang up to date. There's also the new Be a Pro Seasons mode, which puts you in the boots of a single player through four consecutive seasons. We headed over to the company's booth to find out more, as well as play a match in the nearly finished game.

The Adidas Live Season is set to be a huge deal for people who have their machine connected to the Internet. Every Wednesday, you'll be able to download new, up-to-date stats for every player in your chosen league. These stats will reflect the latest performance changes over the past week, and if players get injured their stats will simply drop rather than their being forced out of the game. The FIFA 09 box will come with a code that you can use to register online and pick one country for updated stats. The choice for launch will include England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and France, but unfortunately, if you want extra country data then you'll have to pay an undisclosed sum.

In addition to the Adidas Live Season, the Spanish La Liga divisions one and two will feature for the first time. And there's even more good news, as EA was announced a demo for the game on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on September 11 and on PC on September 12. Gameplaywise, the new Be a Pro Season mode will give you control of a real or fictional footballer for four consecutive seasons. You'll start out as a lowly substitute if you choose to create your own character, or you can take the easier route of playing as someone like John Terry as part of the starting lineup. You'll be given tasks to accomplish in each game, such as scoring a hat trick, as well as overall season objectives like scoring 20 goals. Completing these will affect your overall stats, and thus your ability to move to other clubs.

EA Sports claims to have talked to journalists, FIFA fans and Pro Evolution Soccer fans to find out what they want from a football game. Out of the feedback, they created the new "custom team tactics" feature, which allows you to alter the minutiae of how each team plays. There are three phases to tinker with--defense, buildup, and chance creation. Everything is changed on a 100-point sliding scale, so if you choose a value of 1 in buildup, you prefer an Arsenal style of play where you like to walk it into the goal. At 100, your AI teammates will expect you to be constantly crossing the ball into the box. You can save a full league's worth of different settings for each of your favourite teams, then upload them to your EA locker to share with others.

We're happy to report that FIFA 09 is playing magnificently at this stage. The development team has balanced the speed of the game with even better physicality in the players than before. The players have also lost their plastic look. We're pleased to report that the new Adidas Live Season feature will be in the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of the game. According to EA, they're now just ironing out the last bugs before the game hits the shelves on nearly all formats on October 3.

The demo is very fast. That was one of the first things I noticed. The game play is tight, control is cool. Very easy to engage. But yeah, the demo is a bit fast paced. Awesome though, not bad. From what I saw, 8.5/10...

I´ve played the demo...isn´t the gameplay too quick guys? I loved the nice and slow gameplay of FIFA 08, also if I fully agree with vantheman75 that you need more differentiation in speed. It looks much more arcade to me than simulation compared to Fifa 08. Can you adjust game speed?

I played the demo and I'm glad they fixed some stuff as when you gave a long pass and you couldn't control the player receiving the ball. I haven't played it enough, but so far, very good

@ delatgamer12345 and dolfan928 The 360 is not holding back next gen gaming, it is poor development and production that is holding back next gen gaming. The 360 and PS3 have so far not even had their limitations stretched due to slow development.

i agree with dolfan928, the 360 dvd can handel the graphics and more clubs and stuff so they try and make the ps3 the same which makes it glitchy or just not that good, ea should make a 360 version with the most and then a ps3 version or else the 360 wil always hold back next gen sports games

God I hope they sort the online modes, I think if someone quits on you, intentional or not you should receive an achievement-recognized win! Its an issue in most games but hopefully they'll sort it in this...

@ dj_dominik There was a lot more missing from 08 on PS3. EA seems to think the PS3 is identical to the 360, so they left out a bunch of stadiums and teams that were on the PS2 game, but wouldn't fit on a 360 DVD with enhanced graphics. I'm sick of EA being lazy and ignoring the PS3. I want to see all the MLS stadiums, USL division 1(Miami FC fan), and deep create-a-team and league features with user imported logos(MLS keeps expanding... this would be handy) that can be used within manager mode for the PS3 version. There is no reason this and much much more cannot be done on the PS3 version. I'm tired of the 360 holding back next-gen sports games.

does anyone know if you'll be able to change playing conditions, for example, night games or cloudy or rain-soaked pitches? it's the only thing lacking on fifa 08.....unless someone knows something i don't. i'm sick of playing at the same stadiums under sunny skies....any feedback would be greatly appreciated. the only reason this upsets me so is that on my PS2 version i could play in the snow if i wanted and now i can't :( .... and it's not because i'm from Canada that i want snowy conditions .... i'd rather just play night games to be honest...thanks in advance

I've been a FIFA fan for something like a decade, but 08 was too hard for me who only plays soccer games on occasion. I hope they have put in more variety in difficulty level for 09 along with weekly updates it's gonna be a real winner!

I think the changes they made in Euro in regards to passing and dribbling were a sign of progress. If they keep it up this new online stat tracking and be a pro mode should be a delight. I also think that cocomacoco is wrong with saying that euro was slower than 08. I thought 08 was very slow especially when you have faster players being caught from behind by slower players. at least in euro there was a noticeable difference in speed. I am looking forward to playing the 09 demo, will see if we can do some overlapping runs without players running into each other

I am a FIFA-over-PES man since PES went next-gen. But I can't get over EA's money-spindling scam of paying for this Live season who don't (for example) want to start in a major league but would like updates. They should carry on working on the smaller leagues and maybe registered games could grab an extra FREE code to type in off EA's website.

Yay , Stats go down if they are injured! Ronaldo possibly out til november! then considerably less people pick man utd online! so now i dont have to show them up with inter (viera and cambiasso solid as a rock my friends). p.s not really happy about ronaldo's injury because we are yet to prove that we are good without him but at least there is an up-side,

Euro 2008 showcased a preview of some of the changes that wud be implemented in 09 and it was awesome, with minor bugs and ai issues sorted along with the new features being brought to the table Fifa 09 is shaping up to be very special. Pro evo has been getting poorer each year since PES 5 and unless konami do something special they are in trouble cuz gamers looking for a true football experience arent going to tolerate it much longer before they defer.

they need to make the game far more fluid and responsive. fifa 08 felt more like gliding statues around a pitch. pro evo was a dissapointment too. hope both games improve for this year or i will just stick to footie manager for my football game fix

Notice the difference in previews; for Fifa 09 everything is positive, for Pro everything is negative. I'll be buying both this year, having not missed a pro since it began and having ever owned two Fifa's. But lets be honest, this could be the year Fifa overtakes... Hope ur reading Konami and actually do some work for Pro next year.

ok 1st of all.. if you havent playes pes Dont freaking comment on Fifa.. Fifa 07 was one of the biggest disasters in football gaming history..Then 08 Sucked jsut as bad but atleast it was getting better.. Be a pro mode was Horrid.. no tactics... god it sucked.. now atleast they seem to be taking feedback from fans and seeing wha a fans want and not what they want for the fans.. Hopefully 09 will be much much better.. It sounds good about the custom tactics.. m damn glad thats happened.. still this be a pro or w.e is gonna bore people to death.. O and up to date stats is soooo gonna ruin the game for you lol.. But it will be realistic in some sense..

i can say that i am super pleased already with Fifa 08 gameplay, is fast, balanced and spectacular, I didn't liked the Euro 2008 gameplay style at all, i thought it was really slow and broken, i just hope they don't do this for Fifa 09, I want the same speed or even a bit more than in Fifa 08, because reaL life football is fast paced, not slow, Winning Eleven got the speed right many times, EA should learn from this. But Fifa 08 is the best ever for me.

For 1 thing, if you ever want to play online, u have to go blindly with FIFA, never trust Konami with their online gaming. Damn everything looks good, I will be picking serie-a for the league.
