Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Tsushima has been a smashing success for Sony, as the game has sold more than 5 million copies since launching on July 17 for PlayStation 4.

In fact, Ghost of Tsushima is the PlayStation 4's "fastest-selling first-party original" game, according to PlayStation Worldwide Studios head Hermen Hulst. Hulst made the announcement on Twitter, congratulating Sucker Punch on the "incredible achievement."

This metric is an increase from the statistic PlayStation shared in August, in which the company said Ghost of Tsushima was the "fastest-selling new IP." The open-world samurai action RPG sold more than 2.4 million copies within just the first three days of its launch.

Ghost of Tsushima has been a success, but it's not the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive. While the game reached over 5 million sales four months after launch, the critically acclaimed The Last of Us Part II exceeded more than 4 million copies three days after its June 19 release. And in the same period, Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man sold over 3.3 million copies.

The open-world RPG received a free update last month that added the cooperative Legends mode, a series of missions players can take on solo or as part of a four-person online squad. Legends' first raid, The Tale of Iyo, is now live for 100-level Ki players and above to tackle.

Ghost of Tsushima is playable on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility. And thanks to Game Boost, the game can run at up to 60 fps with even further decreased load times.

I enjoyed Ghost, enough to platinum it, but I find myself on the fence over how to rate it. I'd say that for me the game was overly large and many of the tasks felt cumbersome and boring. Could have done the duels all day long though. Still, it's a very good game that I think most people should play. Especially as it gets more affordable closer to BF.

This games deserves every dollar of sales and love by the players. This game was a breath of fresh air and the perfect last hurrah for the PS4 (being a Japanese origin console). The developers deserve this milestone especially how they've been listening to the fan feedback and rolled out a huge multi-player update over an above the single player for absolutely free. This is a prime example of how to treat the fans and the sales will become automatic.

I platinumed it on PS4 and will pursue NG+ on my shiny new PS5. Can't wait to experience the whole story again.

And it totally deserves it!

Currently making my way through it as we speak and all I can say so far is that there is a very strong argument to be made that this is Sucker Punch's finest experience yet.

What impresses me the most so far is how well GOT manages to handle the usual tropes associated with open world games (repetitive fetch quests, collecting/farming items, etc...) while making them all feel unique and pertinent to the overall premise of the game.

Can't wait to see where the rest of the game takes me and congrats to Sucker Punch on delivering a great new IP. More importantly, it shows other developers that you CAN still take chances on new franchises.

WOW it actually beats Horizon Zero Dawn, quite an amazing feat. Hope it reaches 8 million by end on the year, wholly deserved it.

Well it's pretty easy to get that title if there aren't a lot of new first-party IP's in the first place, which speaks volume about this generation. Both Sony and Microsoft need to step it up and create more studios because only 1-2 AAA first-party exclusive(s) per year feels anemic. Most of them are sequels as well.
