Ghost Of Yotei, A Ghost Of Tsushima Follow-Up, Announced At State Of Play

Sucker Punch is making a sequel, and it stars a female protagonist this time around.

2020's Ghost of Tsushima from developer Sucker Punch is officially getting a sequel. Announced during September 24's State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei is in the works for PS5 and will launch in 2025.

The trailer doesn't detail much in terms of the game's story, instead focusing on beautiful-looking environments and a few moments of combat where we get to see the new ghost, Atsu, in action. Atsu seems to possess a similar skillset to Ghost of Tsushima's Jin when it comes to both swordplay and stealth, but the trailer also showcases that she has access to weapons that Jin didn't. Atsu is voiced by Erika Ishii, a skilled actor and producer who is portraying K in Misfits and Magic Season 2 and is one of the voices for Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Ishii is known for their work as Valkyrie in Apex Legends, Ana Bray in Destiny 2, Dr. Wenjie Evans in Deathloop, and Ame in The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One.

In a PlayStation blog post, Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb wrote, "While we aren't diving into story specifics yet today, we can reveal that Atsu's journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It's a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it's the setting for an original story we can't wait to tell."

Ghost of Tsushima was one of Sony's fastest-selling new games ever at launch and has sold more than 8 million copies to date. So the announcement of a sequel was only a matter of time. A Director's Cut of the game came to PC earlier this year with additional features.

In addition to the Ghost of Tsushima sequel, a movie based on the franchise is in the works from John Wick's Chad Stahelski. The Ghosts of Tsushima movie is being developed under the PlayStation Productions banner. This unit produced the movies Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as the Twisted Metal TV and The Last of Us series. Other upcoming projects include the God of War and Horizon TV shows, and a Days Gone film.

It looks good. I had no real issues with Tsushima other than it had a bit of repetitive things to do in the open world but this is an issue with most open world games. I doubt they'll fix that with this sequel. But it still looks really good. They craft some good stories.

Ah! Remember those good old days when you knew you were playing on a new generation of consoles because you could see a massive difference in visuals between one game and its last-gen predecessor?

Meh, another open-world repetitive game. Copy-paste, sell, profit.

@adrardohan: Except half the gameplay elements of Ghost of Tshushima were taken straight from AC.

Is that the girl from Assassin's Creed Shadows? These open-world slop games all look the same to me.

@mogan: Well... it's the genre itself I find very derivative and stale. AC, Horizon, this game, Rise of the Ronin (and way too many others), it's all the same game to me.

It's a bit like the triple-A equivalent of the farm life simulation genre for indies. There's only so many times I can play a Harvest Moon rip-off before it starts to feel like "slop".

@Tiwill44: People work hard on these games. Hundreds of people, thousands of man hours. Can you make something better? Save your entitlement for mommy and daddy.

@theStrict9: They worked hard and got paid. We're free to make observations about the end result as we like. It's called having an opinion on a piece of media.

@jms01015: No idea what makes you say that. Unless your view of gaming is so narrow that you think there are three genres, so if I don't like 2 of them, I must like the third.

But you know what, out of those three... yes. There is more potential for varied level design in a linear, tightly designed FPS campaign, and a wider variety of combat encounters and movement mechanics possible in a multiplayer FPS match against real players. Especially if you add up all the modes and zombies. So hey, you're not wrong. Call of Duty slop does have more gameplay variety.

@jms01015: they are skillful actresses and other appealing factors , skilled writers all hired on merit. Unlike today's ilk oh you ticked a box your in.. nope not choosing the best man or woman for the part. And today's just stand there like a stooge.

@adrardohan: And you know all this that the character playing in Ghost of Yotie, a video game on top of it, isn't deserving of the part? You don't even know the story. And what you are saying is the writers at Sucker Punch aren't skilled or deserving of merit to do so? And keep in mind, the actresses doing those movies I listed were basically at the beginning of their careers. You want to call a bad game, movie, or whatever as being bad I get it, but what your kind does is blame it on things like you are doing. There will be plenty of great games and great movies where a women plays a prominent role, where it isn't about checking a box and purely about entertainment. Unfortunately, your kind will never see it as so.

@jms01015: nope not talking about sucker punch They are awesome. Well the lead actress is ghost of yotie is an idiot. Spewing nonsense and being disrespectful to fans should be sacked. The box ticking is ubisoft , rocksteady, bioware much of the western Devs full of idiots pushing nonsense. This isn't an attack just an observation 👍

@adrardohan: Well if she's so bad then perhaps there's a solution: enable the japanese voiceover like in Tsushima, that way you won't have to hear her voice AND you'll have japanese authenticity to it.

@CrimsonDeacon: true but she should be sacked with her behaviour be respectful not an ignorant person. I grew up gaming Devs and voice characters had fun and treated fans with respect. We're all the same don't matter who you are. Have a nice weekend buddy 👍
