God Of War Ragnarok Dev Gives An Update: "We Are Perfectionists"

On the fourth anniversary of God of War's release, Cory Barlog gives an update on the long-awaited sequel.

God of War: Ragnarok's Cory Barlog has provided an update on the upcoming PlayStation game, telling fans the team is currently "heads-down, hard at work" at finishing the title for its 2022 release.

"We haven't said a lot about this. That's because everybody is heads-down, hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone is tightening up the graphics...there is so much going on right now that I just wish we could share with you. But it's just not ready to be shown," he said. "I guarantee you the moment--the very second--that we have something we're ready to share, we're going to share it with you. We don't want to hold any of this back. So please, hold tight--know that something cool is coming and that we--everybody here at Sony Santa Monica--is so incredibly thankful for all the support you've given us."

Today, April 20, is the fourth anniversary of 2018's God of War. The game sold more than 19.5 million copies, and that was before it launched on Steam, so the figure may have climbed above 20 million now.

Ragnarok was apparently originally going to launch in 2021, but Kratos actor Christopher Judge suffered an injury in 2019 that reportedly led to a delay to 2022.

Barlog directed 2018's God of War but he stepped back for the sequel, with Eric Williams directing Ragnarok. It is the final entry in the God of War Norse saga, but Barlog said he hopes to make a "big splash" with a different project as his next game--though we don't know anything about this year.

So, a ton of crunch that everyone will ignore because we only really care sometimes (and what I mean by that is actually not at all).

The only downside was the boss battles and miniboss battles. GOW was famous for those.

I hope they will add half of the Norse pantheon to kill this time. But looking at the trailer I don't think so. I saw a lot of rehash of the previous title.

I know not everyone loved it but for me that last game was an incredible 10/10 experience. Part of me wishes the next game would have gotten the PS5 only treatment like Ratchet and Demon's Souls, but when you look at a game like Horizon Forbidden West, you can still get one of the best looking games ever even when it's also on last gen hardware. I already know the gameplay and story will be top notch. So no worries there.

@mooglestar: Ive given the game three legit attempts and I just cannot get into it. One of those games where I see why people like it, but its very boring to me. Honestly my least enjoyable Sony 1st party game after Horizon.

@chaosemerald: Dang. Is it that you're not really into 3rd person games? Maybe the open world thing? Like, how did you feel about RDR2 for example? Although personally I found that pretty boring. Which isn't the popular opinion.

@mooglestar: I've definitely grown to dislike open world games, just from playing so many of them I think. I actually have never even played RDR2 for that very reason. Just figured id get bored of that too.

I much prefer linear games nowadays. Not to the point of a corridor shooter though, but yea. The Last of Us or Resident Evil Village are examples of the kind of size environents I like.

Although there are still the open world game here and there that I love. Like Elden Ring.

@chaosemerald: I have been through a similar phase. I just got exhausted from open-world games. I wanted something more straight to the point that did not give me a lot of chores to do. I never play two open-world back-to-back games to avoid burning out.

@chaosemerald: I've enjoyed a handful of open world games like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Witcher 3, MGS5. The new GOW games are actually a more subdued open world. Really not as big. But what I would say is, you really have to prepare yourself for a lot of exploration and time commitment. They can be pretty overwhelming when you want something smaller, and linear.

I definitely like those games too though, like RE2 Remake and Last Of Us 2. They're 10/10 in my book. But yeah, a lot less beating around the bush in those haha.

@mooglestar: Heck, the gameplay was so good that it could have been far less pretty and I'd still consider it a 10/10. Unlinke many, I prefer the new design over the old trilogy+, by far.

@Pyrosa: Specifically, it's like comparing DMC (old style) to Soulsborne (GOW4).

Go nuts.
