God Of War: Ragnarok Isn't A Confirmed PS5 Exclusive Yet

Despite Mark Cerny's comments about Sony "believing in generations" during the first big PS5 reveal at GDC in March, the company has since taken a more cross-generational stance with many of its exclusives. And it doesn't seem like this has ended, either.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan was asked about whether the recently announced God of War: Ragnarok, a direct sequel to Sony Santa Monica's soft reboot of God of War, would be exclusive to PS5. His answer was surprisingly non-committal.

"Sorry. I've got nothing to say about that today," Ryan stated.

In the past Sony has been very upfront about games that would be exclusive to its new console, which right now only applies to Astro's Playroom and Bluepoint's Demon's Souls. It came as a surprise to hear that Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for example, would also be coming to PS4 months after its initial reveal, along with Horizon Forbidden West and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

It's possible that Sony is still letting development of God of War: Ragnarok get to a point where the potential of a PS4 version can be properly accessed, especially since that would give it a market of more than 112 million potential PS4 consoles. But considering Sony Santa Monica has yet to announce a release date for its sequel (although it is expected in 2021), it could be a matter of timing, too.

God of War was one of the standout exclusives during the PS4 generation, successfully rebooting the franchise with a different take on its combat while building upon the centra character Kratos in a meaningful way. In our God of War review, critic Peter Brown wrote, "Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come."
