God Of War Ragnarok Release Date Confirmed For November, New Trailer Released

Sony finally dropped the God of War Ragnarok release date along with a new trailer.

We finally know when God of War Ragnarok is coming out: Sony today confirmed Ragnarok's release date on PS4 and PS5 as November 9, 2022, making good on the repeated reassurances that it would be available this year. The long-awaited release date was announced as part of a short new CG trailer, which you can watch below. It shows Kratos and Atreus squaring off against various foes and talking about not being alone, before squaring off against what appears to be Fenrir.

Alongside the news, Sony also revealed that God of War Ragnarok preorders will go live on July 15 (starting at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET for those in the United States) and showcased some of the special editions that will be available. Preordering any edition will get you a set of snow-themed items for Kratos and Atreus to wear.

Now Playing: God of War Ragnarok Official Release Date Cinematic Trailer

As for different editions of the game, there will be four versions of Ragnarok available for purchase: standard, Digital Deluxe, Collector's, and Jotnar editions. The latter three all include access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game; if you buy the standard PS4 edition, you'll have the option of a $10 upgrade to get the PS5 version. Prices for these editions has not yet been announced, but the Jotnar edition in particular looks like a high-priced option, as it includes a vinyl record, pin set, cloth map, a 16-inch Mjolnir replica, and more.

Ragnarok was previously confirmed to be releasing in 2022 for PS4 and PS5 after it was delayed last year. A ratings board listing in South Korea recently suggested that the Sony Santa Monica-developed action game is indeed approaching the finish line, although Sony had yet to offer a more specific release date. Cory Barlog, who directed the previous game in the series, gave an update on the project in April, saying the developers are "perfectionists" and are "heads-down, hard at work." Since then, developers at the studio have been harassed over the lack of a release date, with reports that it was set to be announced in late June.

There's still a lot we don't know about Ragnarok, though it is a direct sequel to 2018's God of War and continues the story of Kratos and Atreus as they deal with the fury of the Norse gods. It'll wrap up this Norse chapter of the franchise, as Sony Santa Monica wanted to avoid having this portion of the story from getting too unwieldy. I’ve been an fan since the first GOW on the PS2 and have owned every game and spin-off since. Sony Santa Monica ALWAYS brings it with these games and I have no doubt this one will be a GOY contender. I certainly have no problem with waiting since I know they’re going to produce a fantastic game that’s well worth the wait

No physical deluxe edition seems dumb, guess I'm going standard.

Game will be absolutely amazing, I'm sure. Can't wait to play it. Happy it's on PS4, so I don't have to hunt for a PS5 just to play the one game. The previous game already had beautiful graphics anyway.

That said...lol, a collector's edition with a steelbook, but no physical game disc. Hilarious. What is this nonsense? Modern gaming is becoming increasingly dumb (talking about the practices by game publishers, not the gamers themselves).

Well, thankfully it doesn't matter to me; just makes avoiding the fancy smanshy editions all the easier. I used to preorder and buy stuff like this when I was younger, but as I grew older, I simply grew out of it. Now all I really care about are the games themselves, not giant plastic hammers, rings, dices and other useless crap. I guess I still might find figures kinda cool if they are well made, but in my experience this is exceptionally rare. Currently the only physical trinket from all the collector's editions of games I have bought in the past that I still actually care about, is the physical copy of the Wizard's Companion from Ni no Kuni, just because that thing has a TON of work put into it, and because it's actually useful to have on hand when playing the game.

For soundtracks, if they're good, I'm happy with grabbing a digital copy later on if I want one. For the in-game extra content like armors and weapons and such, I've long since learned that they are almost invariably inferior to late game armors and weapons in pretty much all games, so they are pretty much useless, unless you're desperate for a handicap earlier in the game, which I certainly am not (too easy is the opposite of fun to me). Besides, a lot of said preorder "exclusive" armors and weapons often tend to be available to buy and download from PSN later on in the case of many games.

Save your money and buy a regular physical copy of the game, I say.

i loved the first game. i like how it portrayed kratos. I think the kid was a difficult balancing act tuned very well. The relationship was dramatic, it was seriously harsh but when turned loving - it felt believable and relatable.

I'm worried about the game director swap especially regarding the kid has now grown up and is seemingly post puberty. Is it gonna be about a dainty teen not living up to his fathers strength? And ultimately revolve around some mental health drama where 'everyone is great just the way they are'?

Idk, every can be made to work if continues in the GOW tone, but please please dont make this suck. Dont make into some teen wolf series

They're = shortened form of "they are".

Their = indicating someone's possession of something in plural form.

@tmthywtsn: Sorry sorry, I know I'm being annoying. ('^_^ ) It's just I keep seeing so many people making this mistake (and mixing up its/it's, and were/we're etc), and it's always been bugging me. You just happened to be the one on the receiving end when I finally just couldn't take it anymore, and had to say something. :-P What surprises me the most is, it seems these common mistakes are made just as much by native English speakers as by non-native ones, which really makes me wonder why that is the case. We learned the differences between all of these in the Norwegian schools I went to pretty early on, but maybe for some reason they don't in US schools for example? I dunno. Sorry, I'm rambling. Carry on.

I just don't understand how God of War: Ragnarok will cover the entire battle of the gods, but some of the early trailers insinuate that it will try to be true to the story. Come on, we spent the entire first game playing around with Odin's boring kids.

The first game was somehow hailed as the best game of all time, and while it sports amazing visual and animation - the game was extremely linear and didn't cover nearly as much ground with the story as one would hope.

Will Odin die to Kratos or to Fenrir? I think that's the main questions most people should be asking. Perhaps we will kill Fenrir and use his power to assist us in killing (swallowing) Odin.

@vgmkyle: "the game was extremely linear"

More freedom is fine in games like Breath of the Wild, but for more story focused games like the new God of War games, a more linear approach is preferred imo. It makes the experience better to me, not worse. I much prefer story heavy games with a cool setting and a more tight focus, to massive open world games with a ton of freedom. Always have. Besides, the only way the previous game would be linear imo is if you skip all the side content and only do the main story. There are tons of well-developed sidequests that take you to unique locations, so I personally don't find it all that linear.

I love story focused games as well and IMO the "new" God of War games are revolting for that too. I don't like segments where my speed is cut in half and would just prefer a cut scene. I thought the story of 1-3 was far more interesting than how they wrote a battle of the gods storyline.

Saying there are "tons" of side-quests in that game is not that true IMO. If IRC I beat all of the side-quests in less than a day and was left fighting enemies at a volcano for the rest of my gameplay.

Final Fantasy XV did the same types of side-quests as God of War, which can be called VERY basic fetch quests, but FFXV got panned for it and GOW was called the best game of all time by IGN.

@vgmkyle: Will just have to agree to disagree. To me the game is a straight up masterpiece, and one of the best games I've ever played. The old games meanwhile, although I played through every single one, were for me never anything other than mediocre.

Also, for this game, several of the sidequests aren't even available until really late in the game's story, so if you beat all the sidequests in less than a day, then you must have finished most of the entire game in less than a day, which sounds completely unbelievable to me even if you were to skip lots of stuff. Unless of course, you saved all the sidequests for late in the game, and then did them all in a row in bulk. But even then, I don't know how you manage to be that fast. It would take me tons more time, so I struggle to believe it could be done unless you skip stuff. Off the top of my head, there are at least 6 large, unique locations in the game that are just for sidequests, and some you have to return to more than once. Then there are all the smaller islands in Midgard on top of that. Niflheim and Muspelheim are also rather time consuming to complete. Also, I don't agree with you at all about the side quests being very basic fetch quests. If you get several entire huge, unique areas dedicated just to sidequests, then a lot of effort was put into them, and they are incredibly fun. That you happen to grab a specific item at the end of said areas doesn't matter. Plus, several of them also involve saving the dragons, fighting extra bosses like Soul Eaters, the Valkyries etc. Those are not fetch quests.

@thecupidstunts: No, they confirmed the Norse saga will end with this game, making it a two part story instead of a trilogy. According to Santa Monica Studios, this is because they didn't want the saga to stretch over too many years, as each of the games take quite a while to make. Personally I still think it's a crying shame it's not a trilogy, though...I worry this game will rush the story to hell and back as a result. There is a lot to cover in just one game...

There is only two ways this rebooted series can end right? Either Kratos' son takes his head and earns the mantle of God of War or Kratos has to take his sons, which allow him to disappear to another area of the world where he can then kill all their deities lol.

I still haven't even seen an Xbox series X in person.

It’s a pity the game won’t look like this, that CG trailer looked phenomenal. Not going to expect a big jump in visuals from the first game this time. I made that mistake with HFW thinking it’ll be a big jump from the first game but you can tell it’s a cross gen game. It’ll be the same here. Going off of the last gameplay showing you could tell GOW Rag was cross gen. Again it’s a pity. Still will look great though, I just wish it was ps5 only.

Looks like I’ve got till November now to finish the first game.

@gamerbum:

Hopefully they spent a good bit of time making sure that all versions are as optimised as possible. Santa Monica usually makes sure the games look as good as as they possibly can. The last one looked absolutely phenomenal on my Pro, I'm confident that Ragnarok will look even better on my PS5.

@thecupidstunts: Yep. It looks & runs so good on my PS5 that as soon as the upgrade for it came through I played it again despite the fact I'd just completed my second playthrough less than 2 weeks previous. I'm fully confident that the Santa Monica team will give us another masterpiece & the best looking game they can possibly make, which if they've built it from the ground up for PS5 means it should be about one of the best looking console game to date. 4 months isn't really that far away, well it is & it isn't if you know what I mean and I've already got my week starting Nov 9 off so I'm ready to go. Hopefully by the time I'm done The Witcher 3 PS5 patch will be live 🤞😬🤞

I don't think that's the case though since it's still on last gen consoles. Still, I have no doubt that it will be a stellar game.
