God Of War TV Adaptation Gets Series Order

No release date has been announced.

Prime Video has given a series order to God of War, an upcoming show based on the popular video game series. Deadline was first to report.

After first being announced in May, this greenlight is a significant milestone for a series that has been long-rumored and demanded by fans. In 2018, an inaccurate but viral post on social media was making the rounds claiming that the project starring Jason Momoa was moving forward at Netflix, which game director Cory Balrog cleared up as false--but causing him to publicly ask Netflix if they'd be open to exploring an adaptation.

Instead, the series has landed with Prime Video, with Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) as showrunner and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) as writers. According to Deadline, the series will follow Kratos, the God of War, after "exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece" as he "hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak--his wife's final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world."

That plot is largely taken from and inspired by the game series' 2018 reboot. The franchise recently extended with another sequel, God of War Ragnarök in November, which has earned rave reviews. Christopher Judge, who plays Kratos in the games, wants to portray the character in the series as well.

Sony said in May 2021 that it had 10 TV shows/movies based on its games in the works.

Why start the show from the reboot? I'd love to see Kratos in Greece before seeing him move on to the north

EXACTLY! start the show from the beginning - you need to know why he's the way he is. what he requested from from Ares - the betrayal, killing his family in a rage and all that he battled with thru the 1st 3+ games. not this most recent (2018) and new Ragnarok release. get to those at some point but you need him fighting greek gods and getting help from other greek gods.

I'm sure it'll be about Kratos, and in a respectful way. Wait, they did rings of power. Kratos will be toxic bad man and Atreus will be made female and/or gay.

Well... If the series is gonna follow the new game, i hope they remember Kratos is Greek, and his wife is Nordic. If they don't start the series with "Diversity Casting" it will already be a win.

Also, Amazon usually sets a better budget thank Netflix, so hopefully they can make a good show.

@Barighm: who knows I'll wait until it actually comes out. I don't wanna bash it yet. I like too see it or wait until it's actually out for my verdict. Even though I feel like it's going too be hard too pull off.
