GoldenEye 007 Coming to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion And Xbox Game Pass On January 27

The FPS features online multiplayer on Switch, while Xbox players get 4K resolution.

One of the most celebrated games of all time, GoldenEye 007, finally has a release date on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and Xbox Game Pass. The James Bond FPS will launch this Friday, January 27, for both platforms.

GoldenEye 007 originally came out on Nintendo 64 in 1997 and was based on the 1995 movie starring Pierce Brosnan. This updated version of the game will feature online multiplayer on Nintendo Switch, but not Xbox. Instead, the James Bond title will have achievements, split-screen multiplayer, and a 4K resolution on Xbox.

Now Playing: GoldenEye 007 – Xbox Game Pass Date Reveal Trailer

Nintendo and Rare announced GoldenEye 007 was returning in September, teasing the launch would be soon. It's possible the game was delayed a bit because of the War in Ukraine, though that was only rumored. Last year was GoldenEye's 25th anniversary and James Bond's 60th.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack costs $50 per year and is the only way to play GoldenEye 007 on the system. The game will be available through Xbox Game Pass but also become a part of Rare Replay on Xbox. That means you won't need to subscribe to a service necessarily to play in Microsoft's ecosystem.

For more (and a blast from the past), check out GameSpot's original GoldenEye 007 review from Jeff Gerstmann. "GoldenEye not only lives up to the 'quality, not quantity' mantra that Nintendo continues to tout, it surpasses it," he wrote back in 1997.

Since i bought back then the Rare Replay Collection, this game appeared in my games list as "owned"...cool thing, just downloaded it.

Still, not ready to full dive in,i have other games to finish.

Not ready yet to get used to the different control scheme yet (i played 30 mins and i had to adjust my eyes to the glorious textures lol), it could be irritating if i mix things up coz i play few other shooters right now(Warframe and yes,Anthem...its actually really fun since i had no expectations)

@sladakrobot: It controls surprisingly well on Xbox thanks to modern FPS controls. I'm having a blast playing it again that way.

I am really disappointed! I expected at least a soft remake of the game with new gameplay enhancements fit for the modern era, I really don't mind that the spirit of the original would be preserved both these graphics are really bad for the modern era, especially for somebody who is gonna play this at 4K, let alone 1080p which is still my preferred golden resolution for gaming and multimedia consumption. I have heard great things about this game and I was really hot for it, both after seeing a simple cash grab I know that I won't be playing this game at all...

@machinaex: Um, it likely has something to do with an agreement between Microsoft and Nintendo. The fact they finally ironed out all the issues to even get this game re-released is a miracle in many ways.

This is hilarious. I cancelled my expansion pack last month, because goldeneye had not been released yet.

Will this have improved graphics & modern upgrade to controls on XB? Now I wish they ported over all of the 007's games!

@just1mohr: Yes. The Xbox version of GoldenEye 007 does include improved control options (including dual analog stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD, a consistent refresh rate, and full achievement support. It also includes local 4-player splitscreen support.

Awesome for Friday night gaming. I remember playing GoldenEye 007 and couldn't get used to the C button as the right analog stick on N64. First time playing the campaign for Goldeneye 007.

The graphics are nowhere near as good as the leaked Xbox 360 version from couple of years ago. I wouldn't bother. Why did they have to mess up the graphics. All they did this time was just port the original using an emulator. They had it looking much better than this on the 360 years ago and wouldn't release it.

I played the game again last year, for the first time in many years.
I emulated it with 4K/60fps and M&K support, and it was great fun.
But then I played Perfect Dark with the same setup,
(first time ever playing through that game)
and after that it's hard to go back to 007: GoldenEye.
It's still fun, but it just feels lesser now in every way.

@naryanrobinson: Yeah, Perfect Dark is kind of the Doom to Goldeneye’s Wolfenstein 3D. We wouldn’t have got PD without Goldeneye, but Rare improved on just about everything in that second game.

Let’s be honest…whenever they announced the N64 games coming to the Switch, this is the only one we ever really wanted.

God I can’t wait. It’s been way too long!

Online play too?! WHO WANTS TO GET REKT?!
