Google Stadia Is Shutting Down Its Game Studios, Impacting 150 People Including Jade Raymond

Google's Stadia team is getting out of the game development business.

The game-streaming platform Google Stadia is making a big change, announcing that it will no longer develop games. In a blog post from industry veteran and head of Stadia, Phil Harrison, the executive said Google is focusing on fleshing out Stadia's technology and will back away from actually developing games for it.

"Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we've decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games," the statement said. "Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them."

Google's game-making studios in Los Angeles and Montreal are closing as part of this news, according to Kotaku. Around 150 developers are said to be impacted. According to the report, Google is trying to place the affected developers in new positions within Google.

Jade Raymond, who was among Google Stadia's biggest-name hires for its new game studios, is leaving Google as part of the shakeup. "We greatly appreciate Jade's contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors," Google said.

Alex Hutchinson, the head of the Stadia team in Montreal that was acquired in 2019, reacted to the news with a tongue-in-cheek tweet. "What a time to be alive," he said.

A source told Kotaku: "Google was a terrible place to make games. Imagine Amazon, but under-resourced."

The Stadia and Stadia Pro platforms will remain operational in the wake of this news. "You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform," Google said. "We're committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere."

You can read Google's full statement below.

Google Stadia Statement:

"We launched Stadia with the goal of making your favorite games instantly available wherever you want to play them. With the recent successful launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, gameplay on all types of devices, including iOS, growing our slate of YouTube integrations, and our global expansions, it’s clear that Stadia’s technology has been proven and works at scale. Having games streamed to any screen is the future of this industry, and we’ll continue to invest in Stadia and its underlying platform to provide the best cloud gaming experience for our partners and the gaming community. This has been the vision of Stadia since the beginning.

In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools. We believe this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business that helps grow the industry.

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities. We greatly appreciate Jade's contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

What does this mean if you're a current or future Stadia gamer? You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform. We’re committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere."

At this point, even if you gave me Stadia, I probably still wouldn't play it.

Poor Jade has not been too lucky since leaving Ubisoft.

Not surprised at all but this, first nails in the coffin

🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is how it starts. I’ve been saying since before it launched that it won’t last 5 years. I don’t even really think it’ll make it to 3.

Google is notorious for abandoning projects. On top of that, cloud gaming is still at least 10 years away from becoming a thing. Probably even longer than that.

Third party developers are going to start dropping like flys. Who wants to develop games for a system where even the creators don’t believe in it enough to keep working on games?

@justthetip: A lot of people realised this was a stupid idea before it hit the ground running. I don't know how Google didn't realise this.

The beginning of the end, unless you count the announcement of Stadia in the first place. Here's hoping the folks losing their jobs can move on to work somewhere making something someone will actually play. Good luck to them all.

You aren't going to be able to do cloud gaming without a massive infrastructure overhaul.

Think about it this way, hospitals use the same type of technology to turn computers into thin clients and stream the electronic medical record application to the end computer and not directly install. Even with the application servers in house and millions to invest in infrastructure there is a still a noticable delay.

People in this thread saying game streaming is impossible or that cloud gaming will never be a thing because of the lag or whatever you are lacking in imagination. DLSS thru machine learning can take a 1080p frame and upscale it to 4k better than any human made algorithm. Eventually on the cloud side you will have these same sort of algorithms which can pretty accurately predict which direction you will move the controller next. Basically getting a headstart on the next frame. Not only that but because of the nature of the cloud it could potentially be creating a bunch of frames based on possible moves and sending you the one you actually make. Never underestimate how clever humans can be at engineering our way out of a problem.

Also I will argue people in here saying that cloud gaming should die or go away , you are condemning hundreds of millions of people who can not afford a console or PC to never be able to play these games. Just because you don't like it. Right now you are not the audience , the audience for cloud gaming is people who can never afford the upfront costs of a dedicated gaming box. Eventually when the tech gets good enough you will be the audience but MS Google and Amazon all know thats at least 10 years away. I think Phil has said that outright.

@keiser69: Condemning hundreds of millions who can't afford a console, lmao. You make it sound like such a humanitarian plight.

It's a console. Not a fucking house. It's a few hundred bucks for a machine that will last you 5-7 years. People spend more on mobile devices every year.

@nabinator: I think you mean human right. And no it is not one. But there are 4 billion phones or more because people have decided they need phones. Billions of people have decided they can not afford or do not need to get a console or gaming PC. Thats why Tencent is doing so well because there are so many phones compared to consoles. And thats also why cloud gaming IS actually going to work because if 10 percent of those people are inticed by playing console or PC quality games on their phone tablet or TV without buying a box then thats 400 million customers. Almost 4 times as many customers than the most popular console ever the PS4. So I stand by my point if you want to say cloud gaming will fail or noone wants it , then you have a very narrow view of what the population of this planet actually looks like. Also notice I am not defending Stadia's business model. I think it was terrible and doomed. I think a more successful approach is something like MS has. A low priced sub that only requires a 4G connection on your phone tablet or TV.

@keiser69: No, I believe cloud gaming will happen and some have an right to be skeptical about it. If people buy games to play in the cloud they want guarantees that they will not lose thier programs as computers do burp every now and then. It is like Steam even though it is not in the cloud but if they bottom up there is no guarantee customers will have access to their programs and the same thought can be applied to Cloud gaming even if there is some good advantages but it also have an down side as well.

@keiser69: while it’s true a lot of people could benefit from stadia in the category you mention, too tier games still cost 79.99 to buy on Stadia so it defeats the purpose. Wait a year or two and get a disc ps5 or series x (for less because slim models will have released) and your console is running games better, more cheaply, and without the need for internet than stadia ever could. These same poor are probably living in districts that can’t afford high bandwidth internet. So it’s a good vision, just still too early. Had Stafia launched with a sub model like gamepass that might have turned heads

@consolehaven: Oh dont get me wrong. Stadia's business model for developing countries etc is awful. However a game pass subscription and 4G access on your cell phone or tablet works just fine. Thats why I think MS is in a better position , not sure about Luna yet.

Nope, it was designed for people who play mostly on their mobile phones, the ultimate casuals.

If someone cannot afford a console, save up, you have 5-7 years.

@Random_Matt: You forget that most of the world does not live like you. They are not saving up for a console. They have decided they need a phone, or need a TV but that a console is an extravagance they can not afford. Which is why cloud gaming can open games up to millions of players. Potentially more players than there are consoles sold in any generation. Now I will not defend Stadia's business model , 70 bucks for games and still paying for the service too. That was never going to work. However a Game Pass sub and a 4G connection works fine. Not sure what Luna is doing. And remember subs for game pass or Luna dont have to be priced the same for the States versus the rest of the world. The games are there the money has been laid out to get them there , so any "extra" subs at whatever price is sort of gravy.

@Random_Matt: yeah was this guy not forgetting it was 150 plus the rental charge plus the cost of buying most games after that, it sounded more expensive than buying a console, I got my ps5 on credit so I have 1 year to pay it off interest free. Google was doomed from the start

One of those cases in wich the general public knows better than the very well-paid experts.

Everybody said this was a bad idea from the time it was announced.

Forget that I like to actual OWN my games, not rent them.

Until they solve the speed of light problem, live game streaming is a pipe dream. And to sell games that you don't even own on top of that? This deserved to fail and everyone knew it would fail.

This shouldn't come as a surprise at all given Stadia's absolutely terrible ass state. I'm surprised they're even still supporting the console and pretending like they want to have cloud gaming be a thing when it's still very obviously years and years away from being a thing.

It never ceases to amaze me how these companies can't set up a decent studio with all of their resources. I feel sorry for the poor developers. There are devs who've worked at EA, Amazon, and Google over many years that have no work to even show for it because things were not released or cancelled outright. Going years without seeing any of the fruits of your labor, especially in an industry that treats it's labor like absolute garbage, must be beyond frustrating.
