Google Stadia Is Shutting Down Its Game Studios, Impacting 150 People Including Jade Raymond

Google's Stadia team is getting out of the game development business.

The game-streaming platform Google Stadia is making a big change, announcing that it will no longer develop games. In a blog post from industry veteran and head of Stadia, Phil Harrison, the executive said Google is focusing on fleshing out Stadia's technology and will back away from actually developing games for it.

"Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we've decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games," the statement said. "Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them."

Google's game-making studios in Los Angeles and Montreal are closing as part of this news, according to Kotaku. Around 150 developers are said to be impacted. According to the report, Google is trying to place the affected developers in new positions within Google.

Jade Raymond, who was among Google Stadia's biggest-name hires for its new game studios, is leaving Google as part of the shakeup. "We greatly appreciate Jade's contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors," Google said.

Alex Hutchinson, the head of the Stadia team in Montreal that was acquired in 2019, reacted to the news with a tongue-in-cheek tweet. "What a time to be alive," he said.

A source told Kotaku: "Google was a terrible place to make games. Imagine Amazon, but under-resourced."

The Stadia and Stadia Pro platforms will remain operational in the wake of this news. "You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform," Google said. "We're committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere."

You can read Google's full statement below.

Google Stadia Statement:

"We launched Stadia with the goal of making your favorite games instantly available wherever you want to play them. With the recent successful launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, gameplay on all types of devices, including iOS, growing our slate of YouTube integrations, and our global expansions, it’s clear that Stadia’s technology has been proven and works at scale. Having games streamed to any screen is the future of this industry, and we’ll continue to invest in Stadia and its underlying platform to provide the best cloud gaming experience for our partners and the gaming community. This has been the vision of Stadia since the beginning.

In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools. We believe this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business that helps grow the industry.

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities. We greatly appreciate Jade's contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

What does this mean if you're a current or future Stadia gamer? You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform. We’re committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere."

If google is pulling out, then I get the feeling Sony will pull out of the partnership with MS to use xcloud streaming service.

Google jumped the gun a little. A streaming game service is many years ahead of its time. We're not ready for it yet. If they focus tested, they would have learned that.

Bummer. I like Stadia. Runs smooth as silk for me and no noisy Playstation fan in the room anymore.

Did they actually get a single game released? I’d think this is a precursor to shutting the whole thing down, but who knows.

Never seen this coming...google abandons a half baked half finished project.

I know literally no one who has one of these. Maybe it sold well in certain areas I am not sure.

Even if I was back home with what could be the worlds best broadband I am not sure I would use this yet. If anything I would use Xcloud maybe.

@clawson34: Xcloud makes more sense IMO and I’m not using it either. Cheaper and better for me to just buy games.

@wolfpup7: Yep completely agree. I can see streaming being great for folks who maybe cannot afford a gaming setup or actually wants to play on their phone but for myself I just do not have any interest in it.

Google has a long history of shutting down projects, now they're up to 220 and growing. This is a major flag to invest your time or money into something they have the control over. Look for killed by google website to have an idea.

At first, I thought the "affecting 150" was a jab at how many people use Stadia. I'm still not sure.

Yeah. People stop defending this service. Its going to die off at some point. Hell might be this year. He quits for a good reason. Google lost their way.

@soulcrusher777: the only way it could survive when the exact same service from other companies is died was just he big brand name. Maaaaybe it would make sense as a game rental service but they still haven’t gone that route.

You outright buy a video game that you stream instead of buying monthly subscription to stream games right? What happens to your video games that you outright bought if Stadia shutdowns?

@systemoverload: you lose them. One of multiple reasons I never bothered with this, and it would only potentially make sense as a game rental service (and then only if the price could compete with just buying Xbox games)

@systemoverload: It’s probably written in small print that you don't own the games and they can be removed from your library without prior notice.

@gustavob: I think that's in Steam's TOS too tho. Unless you own the game on disc or buy it DRM-free, it's essentially a rental pending the closure of the service.

@KahnArtizt: In STEAM TOS is stated that in the event of closure of the platform,Valve will provide you with phisical copies of your entire library. When you buy a game on STEAM you are BUYING a game, not renting it, like in 360 Game Pass, or Netflix. You may not be able yo buy a certain edition of a game, but if you already bought it, it will always be yours (Duke Nukem 3D megaton edition).

@skyx26: how does that work when the game doesn’t have physical releases (as in like 99% of Steam games)? That sounds like a very old Steam policy when games still came out physically.

@KahnArtizt: Well, my best guess is that IF that dark day finally comes, Valve maybe provides a STEAM emulator so you can install and run the games or maybe they will remove any sort of DRM (less likely)

@systemoverload: I've wondered that myself. I had a shield tablet and had purchased several titles for it. Eventually I got rid of the tablet. That software could still be used on a shield console but it doesn't really appeal to me and that software can't be accessed on anything else. Basically it's gone. I never understood why google would require a subscription to play purchased games. But then it hit me, they're scamming people who don't know any better. Google has become really reprehensable.

Google can save some money by just shuttering this whole Stadia clusterf-ck. It's garbage. No one wants it. Nothing's gonna' change that.

Based on Google's track record of shuttering projects, I always thought it was risky to pay full retail for titles on this platform with no future guaranteed. Now, even more so.

They seem unaware or maybe don't care about this widespread reputation they have. They talk about 'Youtube integrations' where they should be swearing up and down that they will still support it in 5 years.

@pappafost: the YouTube integration is gone now anyway since third parties aren’t going to develop stuff only for stadia. I never cared about it since I don’t care about multiplayer and much less that sort of thing.

funny how they still say so proudly that the service will remain and prevail even though it was never mentionable and now the only one who cares about its success says they step aside.

do they really consider it a victory if there will be a few thousand inactive accountsjust like with all their other services? until after a couple of years when they pull the plug

how can so handedless company be so big? search engine, maps and android are successful because theres almost no competition and google doesnt need to actively promote them. they are just de facto tools atleast for now. its not like actively choose to use any of them because theyre awesome. theyre just there

What Google tried will probably be the future but now the infrastructure of the internet, the bandwith, the prices for the service are simply not broadly available/affordable and Stadias subscription model was gross!

Dunno how those overpayed ppl at Google didnt saw this comming?

I guess there must always one company which tries something and fails so its a good lesson for other how to do better.

Google needs to figure out how to add more tracking parameters and less fun to their games. Then they’ll be back.

There's a reason Microsoft have spent billions in getting exclusive content.

Stadia....more like stADIOS
