Grab Saints Row 2 For Free As The Series' Latest Games Go DRM-Free

The Saints wouldn't like DRM anyway.

GOG today launches DRM-free versions of the two most recent Saints Row games, and to celebrate, it's giving away an earlier title for free.

Over the next two days, you can add Saints Row 2 to your library for free. This is a DRM-free version of the game, meaning you don't have to use GOG or its Steam-esque Galaxy client in order to play it. Simply claim it on GOG's website before the deadline--this Saturday, April 22, at 3 AM PT/6 AM ET/11 AM GMT--and it's yours to keep forever.

No Caption Provided

As for the new releases, both Saints Row IV: Game of the Century Edition and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell (a standalone expansion to Saints Row IV) are now available through GOG, marking the first time they've been offered DRM-free. Both games are 75% off right now, dropping their prices to $5 (£3.79) and $3.74 (£2.79), respectively.

If you already own Saints Row games on Steam but want DRM-free copies, you can use the GOG Connect feature to import them to your GOG library. This applies to Saints Row 2, The Third, IV, and Gat Out of Hell. The process leaves your Steam copies intact but allows you to also download the games from GOG, sans DRM.

2 = Best Row

Sucks to hear there may be issues, but if its free and you havent tried it yet, not much to lose.

SR2 is back when it was nothing but a GTA knock off. I wish it was SR3, that's when things got fun and made it worth buying. It was all out chaos and simply down right fun, instead of trying to be some "serious" gangster game.

@sargentpsgamer: no SR1 was the knockoff, 2 made it awesome. Your memory fails you. 3 took away things that were fun and made a complete mess of everything.

@mentalrevolt: 2 was better than 1, but they were still afraid to go balls out comedy. It had some missions that were crazy, but it was still a "we need to be the best gang in town" game.

@sargentpsgamer: 2 still has the best melee weapon..... The foam finger! Playing Coop and smacking each other across the map with a foam middle finger was priceless.

"This is a DRM-free version of the game, meaning you don't have to use GOG or its Steam-esque Galaxy client in order to play it."

This sentence is very poorly worded. You've never needed to use Galaxy to run the games, nor do you need to "use" GoG to run the DRM free games. It also implies DRM free games are somewhat unusual for GoG and that's just LOL funny.

the gog PC version has very bad performance problems. The steam one had far less, keep that in mind because i've played both. Its typical of the gog versions to do this, ive run into many performance problems in their versions which don't exist in the drm ones. Since its free go for it though.

There is a player made patch that has some minor performance improvements like unlocking the framerate and adding 16:9 suport, but its still very unstable and its a patch made for the steam version, which actually does work on the gog one also from my testing. It was funny, cause one of the developers banned someone for posting this fix saying if someone used it proved they didnt own the game, yet i have both games legally and it worked on both the gog and steam version. Likely a rogue developer on a power trip abusing his little authority he had left on the forums.

If anyone is gonna replay this game on PC may as well do it right. Save yourself some trouble and install Gentlemen of the Row mod along with it. It'll patch most of the game breaking bugs and add new content as well. Tons of fun to be had.

@SteadyingMeat: one of the worst PC ports of all time. Doesn't even run at 1080p without a player made patch. Also if you enable shadows u get a lot of crazy fps drops. Its a shame also because the game is pretty fun and a much more fun game than the first one and has lots of character customization.

As you stated, many won't even be able to get it to run, and if they do will experience some really bad performance depending on the time of day in game and how much the engine chugs to dish out certain lighting effects.

@SteadyingMeat: the GOG release is vastly improved, was actually the CD Projekt who did the port originally so guess they had access to the code to fix it , sadly the Steam version is still abysmal as you have pointed out.

@BabeNewelll: its the other way around. The gog one has massive performance problems. The steam one has a exe file made by a player that reduces the poor performance, but does not completely fix it.

@Yams1980: GoG is persistent at fixing their games. BG Enhanced started out pretty crappy too. It's been almost completely fixed since then.

@SteadyingMeat: Sadly true XD I have yet to progress beyond a few missions before my save data stops working, considering I endure the horrible framrate throughout.

I wasn;t that huge a fan of SR2.......it was better than SR3 though but my fave bit in the game was the whole Septic Avenger missions.....I mean missions where you shoot the sh**t LITERALLY at houses LMFAO you could say it was a SH**T MISSION set....lol

I wish they had done more missions like that......why even put the septic truck in SR3 if the truck itself didn't do anything????

@darthrevenx: if you didn't like 2 then you dont like Saints Row. It was by far the best. Honestly can't tell if you are serious or being a troll like you usually are in 99% of your replies to topics.

@darthrevenx: But SR3 took that mission concept and based the entire game on it. That's what made it so fun, it wasn't trying to be serious the entire time.

@sargentpsgamer: honestly the entire SR series has issues....

first game was a bit bland but being able to make your own character in a open world crime drama was cool but some of the structure was too formulaic, go here, kill these, do activities for BS rep, take down gang, rinse repeat.....

SR2 was better but some of the gangs IMO were a real bitch to defeat, and it played out a little like the first game until Ultor came in, the story was good and humor was well rounded but I never beat SR2......

SR3 was just bad....mainly cus of the humor, the missions were actually good same with the activities but the jokes were all one note.....

SR4 threw everything away, the story was crazy but good, jokes were well rounded but all of the gangsta stuff was made pointless....IDK why they put so much time into the cars when you get powers it made the cars useless....good game but maybe they should have started a new IP then and there.....

I'm kinda looking forward to Agents Of Mayhem just to see what it's all about.....it could be a whole new chapter.....
