Gran Turismo will reveal 'what's next' for the series on May 15

"We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating," says Sony.

Sony has confirmed that Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi will reveal the future of the series during an event taking place at the UK's Silverstone racing circuit on May 15.

No Caption Provided

While Sony is not saying whether Polyphony Digital has been working on Gran Turismo 6, SCEE senior vice president Michael Denny name-dropped the title as a PlayStation 3 game in an interview earlier this year.

The event, designed to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Sony's flagship driving simulator, will be attended by car manufacturers Nissan, Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, KTM, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, and Toyota.

"The Gran Turismo franchise continues to be extremely important to PlayStation," explained Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Jim Ryan. "We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating along with our colleagues from the Americas, Asia, and Japan."

"As well as experiencing the development of the franchise and comparing the virtual and real, it will be a pleasure to see Yamauchi-san and hear what's next for Gran Turismo," added Ryan.

The Silverstone circuit has never actually featured in a Gran Turismo to date, but GTPlanet reported in September 2012 that Polyphony Digital staff have visited the track several times to take photographs and scans.

As a fan from the original GT, I would have to say GT5 was quite disappointing. I couldn't care less what gen system it comes out on, I just want a damn good racing game. I hope GT6 will be what GT5 should have been with a bit more.

What we want for all racers 'realistic damage', because the rest seems to be coming on very well...but more for F1 right now as the damage there is far below acceptable...

I really hope this time they ship a complete PS3 game instead of shipping the game with 4/5 of the cars from PS2 editions, horrible interface and no matchmaking.

GT5 was the first GT I played, it is great, but the "standard cars" graphics were not good, looking forward to GT6, or will it be GT Vita??

I wish they would branch out with Indy, Nascar, Off-Road, and Street Racing. I want some variety and some real AI this time. Eye candy can only go so far.

@awhite33 @VeeArSick Yes, 15 years old to be exact. I don't like Gran Turismo 5. I currently play Forza Motorsport 4, but my racing game roots stem from this game, and I'll continue to support it even if I don't like it's current model.

@zhing_wong 15 years of making the same game with better graphics. Joy. Waited 5 years for GT5 and we got an unfinished game and apologies from Polyphony for not living up to their expectations.

@awhite33 Look up the sales for this game and tell me it's done.

If you want to say it's a personal let down, then sure, I agree.

@VeeArSick @awhite33 It's not done, but it needs lots of changes. Sales don't matter in this case. That's like saying look at the sales of Halo or Mario Kart. Sheesh Mario kart blows GT away in sales overall and I sure GT fans don't think it means anything.

@blackace @VeeArSick @awhite33 PD is a business. Sales equal money, and money is very important to a business. So yes, it matters in this case considering we're talking about the success of the franchise.

Halo and Mario Kart are completely different games than Gran Turismo 5. Why would you compare those sales figures? Instead, lets compare my favorite game to GT 5.

GT 5: 13m

FM 4: 4m

But, yes... it does need a lot of changes.

They made gamers wait too long for the PS3 version of GT, I just hope they don't do the same for the PS4.

Wow, has it really been 15 years? As far as racing simulators go, Gran Turismo is still the best of the bunch, IMO.

When she was learning to drive (never driven a car before) I actually made my gf pass all the license tests in GT5 using the G25 racing wheel before I would let her drive my car. lol.

@J_Dangerously Yes, yes, and hopefully yes. That's the beauty about a racing game like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. Car Enthusiasts just want to drive their dream cars as hard and as fast as they can around their favorite tracks around the world. Improvements that may not look like much to you on paper, are HUGE for players like myself.

Forza Motorsport 3 to Forza Motorsport 4. Physics improved, PI improved, Removed/Added Cars, Removed/Added Tracks, Added Drag Tires. That doesn't seem like much does it? Worth every penny I spent preordering the Limited Collectors Edition.

If by "celebrate" they mean pulling their heads out their asses and releasing a Red Rock Valley/Seattle Circuit track pack, then I'll buy the beer.

If the next Gran Turismo takes as long to develop as the last one, gimme a call in 2018. I will play Drive Club in the meantime.

What's next for the series is to steal from Forza. Because they'd been lapped multiple times by Turn10 in the span between GT4 and GT5. I used to be a fan of both, originally GT obviously, but I think I'd pass on GT6 unless it was essentially gutted down to the foundation and rebuilt. Forza has pretty noticeable changes every time. Gran Turismo needs to tone down the tire squeeling more than anything. It's like a banshee cry.

Here's hoping... GT5 was a big letdown for me. Luckily I had Forza to keep my racing-sim itch under control this generation. I hope they come back in a big way with GT6. The gaming world needs more quality racing sims.

Well...shucks! If they manage to get the engine sounds right, and a major overall in the sound design department, along with an improved suspension and tire model, I just might get a PS3 just for THIS!

Die hard FM4 fan BTW!

I'm excited, as a die-hard Forza fan, AAA racing games are hard to come by these days, no sense in not experiencing everything by "swearing allegiance" to only one game.

@Ansem_Rev Compare to GT5 it is, but for some reason many of the Europeans and Japanese gamers don't see it that way. That's the only reason Forza sales are lower then GT. Like 75% of Forza sales are probably from American gamers.

Did they say 15 years OF Gran Turismo or 15 years until the NEXT Gran Turismo???

I missed that somehow...
