Greedfall's Free Next-Gen Update Is Now Available, Unless You Got The Game From PS Plus

PlayStation players who picked up Greedfall during its PS Plus promotion don't have access to the free PS5 upgrade.

Greedfall's free next-gen upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is now available for everyone who began playing on last-generation hardware. However, you don't have access to the free upgrade if you happened to snag the action-RPG during its PS Plus promotion back in January, developer Spiders confirmed.

Spiders outlined the free next-gen upgrade's enhancements on Twitter, which include faster load times and a 60fps performance mode. When asked whether the PS5 upgrade would be free for the PS Plus version of Greedfall, the game's official Twitter account said that it's "not eligible."

In other words, PlayStation 4 players who bought Greedfall can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game for free. Meanwhile, those PlayStation players who got the game through PS Plus will have to purchase the PS5 version.

Spiders didn't specify why the PS Plus version of the action-RPG is ineligible for the free PlayStation 5 upgrade. We've reached out to the developer for clarification and will update this story should it respond.

Greedfall is Spiders' latest project, which launched in September 2019 for last-generation hardware. Along with the next-gen version that's now available, a new piece of DLC called The De Vespe Conspiracy is now up for purchase. It retails for $7 and adds a new region, costumes, weapons, and contracts.

What a mess...if you did this,you cant...but if you did that,you can?

Someone who got a 2nd hand copy for dirt cheap can upgrade but the ones who pay for a subscription cant?

It's unfortunately just like what happened with Final Fantasy VII Remake, where PS5 owners couldn't upgrade for free if they opted for the copy from PS Plus on PS4.

This is completely on the platform and not the publisher/dev. There's a reason this upgrade is included on Game Pass and there have been other examples as well, where Xbox has been much more pro consumer when it comes to this. Come on Sony, "for the players", right??

@sabredj: It is not really that bad. Your given free games with PS Plus: a monthly payment of $9.99, a quarterly payment of $24.99 and a yearly payment of $59.99. Which is not a subscription model like play NOW. If you bought the FF7R , you get a free upgrade, and if you did not, time to pay up - no such thing as a free lunch.

While game pass is awesome and amazing, they just do not have the same number or quality exclusives that the sony platform has to offer. Same with Nintendo. I like free stuff as much as the next guy, but I also know that when a console sales 120 million consoles 8th gen, 10 mill 9th gen and has double the tie in ratio of either competitor.... they do not have to give much away.

Pro Consumer... Xbox is really betting down on the subscription model and hopes that it will pay for these choices later on. And that the subscription model is the future. Right now Sony, is ..... is betting on must have games. If Sony has great exclusives then they deserve compensation, and a competitive gaming environment is great for all gamers, even if they have to pay for it.

@jenovaschilld:

I think we agree on most everything. I'm not expecting them to not make money reasonably, where they can, but when you could have easily made Square put the Yuffie DLC on PS4 as well, plus other choices they've made it's pretty obvious that they put money above all else right now.

Subscription is the future, and as someone with an extensive business background, I've run the numbers and Game Pass will make billions of dollars depending on subscription enrollment numbers. Just being conservative, it'll be more than profitable for them and the publishers/developers that use it. It always makes me shake my head when others say it's doomed, because it's obvious they haven't done a lick of looking into it.

I'm a fan of both companies and own/will own both going forward, I think that they both offer uniques experiences and with Xbox now focusing on exclusives we should see both aspire to the being their best... eventually.

@sabredj: ONE thing I know for sure, in 40 yrs of gaming, all companies will always choose profits over us gamers, none have our best wishes at heart, unless that wish is for us gamers to give the gaming industry all of our money. OH ALSO THE YUFFIE DLC IS TIMED EXCLUSIVE, was in state of play news.

Well I know for sure that a Netflix style subscription model is the future for a couple of reasons: one metadata (metadata has grown to become one of the most profitable streams for the gaming industry), two (kills off the loss from used games and price controls the used game markets exerts on the gaming industry), and 3 targeted advertising to the individual gamers. The still want you to buy games as well as keep that subscription service, be sure of that.

But is it the future right now.... xbox game pass is wildly successful because many it is a very cheap way to play xbox exclusives and those with only an xbox - have very few choices and game pass is at least a good one.

See here: https://www.techradar.com/news/xbox-game-pass-vs-playstation-now-which-is-the-best-game-subscription-service

The services are very similar with PSN offering many more games then gamepass but GP offering way more exclusives to the xbox console. Then there is amazons, and apples, and soon netflixs own one as well. Meanwhile i bet the rest of the 9th gen it will still be huge exclusive games that propel xbox , ps, and nin along.

Me, I have adopted PC along with console over 25yrs ago, I carefully plan out my purchases and almost never feel the need to buy anything day one. Except for FF7R - it was so worth it.
