Greedfall's Strong Sales Pushed Focus Interactive To $41.2 Million In Revenue This Quarter

For once, piracy helps a publisher

Greedfall has achieved sales beyond what its publisher Focus Home Interactive expected, helping them turn a record profit.

As reported by Gamasutra, Focus Home Interactive has recorded revenue of €37.2 million (about $41.2 million) in its second quarter report for the 2019-2020 financial year, up 135 percent from their revenue in the same quarter last year. €22.5 million of that revenue came from new releases.

Now Playing: Greedfall Video Review

The first half of the financial year broke records for the company, as they recorded €79.8 million (about $88.4 million) in revenue for the period, which ended on September 30. 84% of their sales were digital, up from 65% in the first half of the previous financial year, while sales of the company's back-catalog titles were also up 50%.

During this period Focus Home Interactive has published Greedfall, A Plague Tale: Innocence, The Surge 2 and World War Z, among others. The company will today release Vampyr on Switch.

Greedfall has done well for the company despite a few less-than-glowing reviews, including our own review from Khee Hoon Chan. "Because Greedfall is so cavalier about its colonialist themes," our reviewer wrote, "and because it plays it safe by sticking so closely to the template of open-world RPGs, it doesn't really feel revelatory in any way".

Nice. Glad to see the portfolio of Double A (versus AAA) titles doing well. We used to get far more medium budgeted games like the ones mentioned in the article; nowadays it seems games are either massive (usually open world) AAA titles or indie with nothing in between. I didn't pick up Greedfall on release, but at some point I will absolutely get to it. I hope the success catapults Spiders to a greater level of public regard and awareness; it would be really cool if Greedfall ends up serving as the foundation for an ongoing RPG franchise that they can iterate upon and improve with successive releases.

Greedfall has its issues, surely, but it's weird that it got docked because it "doesn't really feel revelatory in any way" yet Borderlands 3 got an 8/10...

Good for Spiders and the Greedfall game. I've been enjoying it.

Also thanks for the reminder that the review of it here, like so many others, was subpar.

That's great to hear. I enjoy seeing lesser known studio's succeed. It looked interesting, want to pick it up eventually.

Well i'm happy for them. I never purchased it being i thought there would be a bit more gunplay. But the sales may bring other games like it from those time periods. So far, AC have been the only ones to try it.

On the one hand, I am really glad there are studios fighting the current trend of disregarding what consumers actually want. On the other, I can't wait for the next iteration or two, so the game will be as good as the trailers had it looking.

Good to see gamers got it right, great game. Okay, maybe not a full blown classic but very decent indeed. Way better than the awful 5 Gamespot gave it..

Enjoying Greedfall at the moment, granted am only a few hours in. Loved Vampyr. Haven't picked up a Plague Tale just yet but will in the future. Let's hope these different games getting traction will make some of the heavy hitters explore new ideas/set up new franchises

@annettebomb: I highly recommend a Plague Tale Innocence, definitely in my top 10. And I agree that it would be awesome if more games took risks like these games do.

A Plague Tale,World War Z,The Surge 2 and Greedfall...a very solid line up of games and none of them are placed in overdone genres...no wonder their financial report is positive.
