Green DS Lite bundle planted May 3

Nintendo's money-minting handheld picks up apt new hue; packaged with Personal Trainer: Cooking, carrying case next month.

The Nintendo DSi launched to impressive demand earlier this month, selling 600,000 units total in North America and Europe during its first two days. However, even with that impressive demand for the DS's latest hardware revision, Nintendo still has plans to support its best-selling DS Lite.

Tasty.
Tasty.

Today, Nintendo announced that the latest color to be added to the DS Lite's hardware rainbow will be green. The green DS Lite will be available on May 3 and comes bundled with Personal Trainer: Cooking and a green and white carrying case. Nintendo did not specify a price point for the hardware-software combo and had not responded to requests for comment as of press time. However, retailers are currently listing the package for $149.99.

Released in November 2008, Personal Trainer: Cooking is not so much a game as a digital cookbook. The software contains more than 245 recipes, pulling tastes from countries around the globe, such as Argentina, Portugal, and Thailand, and offering step-by-step guidance on how to prepare the dishes. Check out GameSpot's hands-on with Personal Trainer: Cooking for more on the title.

I own this one.

I bought it to replace another DS that I lost. I already owned Personal Trainer, so I gave the new copy to a friend. I also already had a case (and wouldn't be caught dead with that purse thing), so I gave the one that came with it to a girl I knew that had a DS.

I'm about to replace it with a 3DS (haven't decided on color, but I'm leaning towards purple), but I'll hang onto the Lite. I'll need it anyway to trade Pokemon to Black and Black 2 from my fourth gen games.

I'm new to the site and I don't classify myself a hard core gamer. I just bought a DS lite and have no loyalty to any gaming systems. Therefore I'm surprised that so many people are being so closed minded as I have seen here. Why do you care how a DS is bundled or what color it is? For years I have had to deal with the intimidation and lack of consideration that prevented, me - a girl, the desire to play games more seriously. So for those of you, you can take your "green chunks" and your "games for gamers" opinions "to boot" and let them blow like "dust in the wind" and may "God help . . ." you take others into consideration. I wrote a blog on this about a week ago but I had to wait till I was a level 3 before I could comment. Please feel free to leave me a comment or two if you'd like.

@KhanhAgE: It looks nice, and the system too. And if I carry one of these around the streets, it doesn't make me a pantsy, it means I'm secure about my sexuality. In fact chicks like nice things in nice colors, know what am sayin'?

The green and white carry case looks nice and all... but I think that any man caught in public holding one is going to look like total a pansy (a pansy who looks like he is carrying a purse).

One thing will top the red DS Lite, GCwasthebestsys. The discovery of the capslock button, the one that you discovered once before and haven't been able to find since you pressed it.

On another note, I'm still deeply surprised Clubhouse Games hasn't been a pack-in game. They even rereleased it since the first print a few years ago was lamentably small (and knocked the price up to $50+. It's now a nice $20). It should be the Tetris of the DS. It appeals to just about anybody, it has online play, online pictochat that's better than the built-in one, and... well... it's just great. The community would be huge if every DS came with it. From Memory to Shogi, Stratego to Solitaire, and of course staples like Chess, Checkers, Hearts, Othello and even Battleship. It provides plenty to do even when you're alone, unlocking avatars and other fun bonuses with challenges. There's even a mode where you play through each game one to three times (skilled players can win in one play and go to the next game, new players practice and go on to the next game after a few rounds). The game has well-written instructions for every game in-game. You can also send demo's to others, allowing them to play one of the 42 games to their hearts content until they turn the system off. Also, single-card play allows up to 8 players and they manage to do that without cutting out anything. The only real flaws are that purists might not enjoy some of the game rules in the card games, the physics in action games like billiards aren't very good (but there's very few of those), and a DS is required for each player, as there's no mode to pass the DS. Also, the DS was practically made so we could have Clubhouse Games, it plays like an absolute dream. It's worth owning solely as a copy of "Pictochat Online". It's a touch generations game as well. Completely inoffensive, and perfect for children and the elderly. But no, we get crap like Personal Trainer: Cooking. Do yourself a favor and pick it up. The reprint is a nice second chance for those who missed out. Oh, and DSi owners probably ought to ignore the downloadable Clubhouse Games. This is $20 to that games' $5, but it's much more than 4x better. I don't mean to sound like an ad, but really. Who else agree's Clubhouse Games would've been the perfect pack-in game?

Personal Trainer: Cooking?! I HAVE to get a vomit green DS Lite now! Ummm... I'm still holding on to my original silver DS from launch that came with First Hunt. The d-pad is better, and unlike my friend's DS Lite, the hinge is not cracked and my GBA games don't all stick out of the bottom halfway. Too bad about the screen being dimmer, but what're ya gonna do?

I-I-It's.... strangely alluring, yet repulsive at the same time. That's an awful game to bundle with it though. And a purse-thing to boot. Should've made the DS standalone for $120. This was aimed at casuals though, so in that sense this marketing is absolutely brilliant and right in time for mother's day I think.

What a disappointment. I saw the title of this article, and I got excited, hoping for maybe a nice-looking dark green DS Lite with a good game, maybe even at a cheaper price (like $120). I got this ****. What an ugly color, and who plays Personal Trainer: Cooking? I hate those so-called life training games. If I want to learn how to cook, I'll ask a real person who knows how to cook, not touch a screen with a stylus. I guess I'll just keep waitng for a price drop, then get the DS Lite.

I don't even care what color a system has, unless it is pink or something. I believe it's the games that matter. Nintendo could have used this color or something, but bundled the system with a much better game like mariokart or yoshi's island. No matter how cool the color is, the game will make a bigger difference.

Dear Nintendo: The color isn't a reason to buy a DS, the games are. I hope this is not the future of gaming :S.

I think Nintendo needs to focus less on color coordinating options for people, less on "games" for my mom and grandma and more on games for gamers.

theres a lot of stuff i love about the ds. and there's a lot of stuff that worries me. this is one of the things that worries me. I'm not going to knock nintendo for going in this direction, but i just hope the other companies dont follow and leave us "gamers" to become dust in the wind. its quite obvious that this "casual gamer" market is far larger and easier to sell to than us, as the wii and DS have more than doubled the PS3, PSP, and 360 sales, and the people at sony and microsoft arent idiots. so, i guess while i dont mind that nintendo is going this way, i hope that it doesnt hurt us "gamers" in the future

This is just more pure proof of Nintendo's wide ranging demographics and their at times genius marketing. Hardly any core gamer or Gamespot visitor is going to give two flying goombas about this, but we all know it's not targeted at us. Mom's and the few still non gaming girlfriends out there will thoroughly enjoy a package like this. They don't need the expensive DSi so Nintendo will sell them the cheaper DS lite, and give them the quite amazing Personal Trainer Cooking they actually will use. And from experience I know girls love to match their DS with a case, so a green/white case tops it off. I don't know why anyone would be complaining about this since if you're reading this it's probably not for you anyway. Now go out and buy your mom this for Mother's Day.

Wow very odd that they wouldn't just be treating the Lite like last years version and start supporting the DSi more. My guess is its cheaper to make and there probably thinking that the lower price tag might keep the gamer that doesn't want to spend more then $150, but stilll very odd.

weird its coming up just after the DSi. i'd rather get a DSi.. but.. my DS Lite white is just fine. maybe in a year or so.. i take a wait n see. its just too much money for me to buy it just to check out the gimmicks & stuff, unsure of whatever it is they'll end up making (or not) of it all.
