GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption Developer Rockstar Will Announce New Games "Soon"

Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar Games is "hard at work" on new games, which will be announced "soon," parent company Take-Two Interactive announced today.

The tease came as part of the company's latest earnings report, and with E3 right around the corner, the timing is particularly interesting.

Now Playing: GS News Update: GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption Developer Rockstar Will Announce New Games "Soon"

No Caption Provided

"Rockstar Games is of course hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon," Take-Two said.

The publisher did not provide any further details on these games. However, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff mentioned during an earnings call that the company is working on new IP to further diversify its portfolio, though it is not known if one of Rockstar's new games is a new IP.

CFO Lanie Goldstein also mentioned that Take-Two is expecting a 75/25 revenue split between 2K Games and Rockstar Games for the current fiscal year (April 1, 2016-March 31, 2017). This would suggest Rockstar's next game may not come out during this fiscal year.

Additionally, CEO Strauss Zelnick said on the call that Take-Two has announced its complete slate for the current fiscal year, and no Rockstar titles are on it.

Recently, Zelnick teased that the company had big plans for E3 2016. In April this year, what was believed to be the map for Red Dead Redemption 2 leaked, suggesting the game was possibly a prequel to the 2010 original.

In terms of business performance, Take-Two had a tough fourth quarter and full year ended March 31. For the fourth quarter, revenue was $342.5 million, compared to $427.7 million during the same period last year. Take-Two mentioned that last year's fiscal fourth quarter benefited from the launch of Evolve and ongoing sales of the company's "more extensive holiday 2014 release slate," thus making for a tough comparison.

Profit for the quarter was $51.7 million, down from $54.3 million during the same period last year.

Key drivers of revenue for Take-Two's fourth quarter included Grand Theft Auto V, GTA Online, NBA 2K16, XCOM 2, and WWE 2K16. Revenue from digital sources jumped 12 percent to $226.6 million, with the GTA, NBA 2K, and WWE 2K franchises, as well as XCOM 2, helping drive the growth.

Another bright spot in the quarter was "recurrent consumer spending," which includes virtual currency and DLC. This sector grew 15 percent year-over-year and made up 55 percent of net revenue from digital sources, or 37 percent of total net revenue. Catalog sales during the quarter amounted to $211.3 million, led by the GTA and Borderlands franchises.

For the full year, revenue was $1.561 billion, down from $1.669 billion during the previous fiscal year. Again, Take-Two mentioned that the previous year's game lineup was "more extensive," thus making for a tough comparison. Take-Two pulled in a profit of $218.3 million for the year, down slightly from $219.2 million.

Take-Two called out GTA V, GTA Online, NBA 2K16, NBA 2K15, and XCOM 2 as being the "largest contributors" to revenue for the full year. Revenue from digitally content rose by 36 percent to hit an all-time record of $835.2 million. The GTA, NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and Borderlands franchises led the way here, with XCOM 2 also called out as a top performer.

Recurrent consumer spending revenue was also on the rise for the full year, jumping 33 percent compared to the previous year and making up 48 percent of revenue from digital sources; this comes out to 26 percent of total revenue.

"Fiscal 2016 marked the third consecutive year of stronger-than-expected Non-GAAP revenues and profits for Take-Two," Zelnick said. " Our results were driven by the continued extraordinary performance of Grand Theft Auto V, ongoing momentum in our NBA 2K and WWE 2K series, the successful launch of XCOM 2, and our highest-ever revenue from recurrent consumer spending."

A Red Dead Redemption prequel, and a Warriors re-make (not a re-master, but a ton of added story, levels, gangs, features and obviously a graphics update). Two of my favourite games ever made, so here's hoping. Go Rockstar, just don't make a game as hollow as GTA V again please.

@Ferg1213: Isn't there already a red dead redemption prequel? since redemption was a sequel to begin with.

I'm expecting a sandbox game with a hard nosed, skin head male protagonist (cause it's easier to animate skin heads) who has some problem with the establishment or crooks while working for the establishment or crooks sometime soon then.

Red Dead for PC or PS4? GTA6? Hope they bring something less predictable, like a new Max Payne or Manhunt.

RDR 2, and please make an awesome PC port in the footsteps of GTAV. As far as GTA I am sure it will just be story DLC for GTAV, which is fine with me all their expansions for GTA story modes have been awesome so far. I actually think I enjoyed the GTA4 expansions more than the main game.

Red Dead Redemption took place in 1911. How about an awesome crossover of brands and give us a Red Dead in prohibition era 20s... IN LIBERTY CITY (or at least the state of Albany, where LC is). That would be mind blowing.

@gameoftrolls: Mafia 1 was great when it came out, Mafia 2 was way too repetitive. And then there was that whole deal with all of that extra content locked inside the game... Mafia 2 had few good moments, and was disappointing in my opinion...

As much as I'd like to hear news of a GTA6 or RDR2, I'd like to see a new IP from Rockstar more. I prefer it when companies branch out and try something different now and then. It's important to try new things now and then.

Games hey? so definitely more than one? I hope so much that one of them is another Midnight Club more like the older faster classic ones and a new Manhunt very similar to the first game, I still play that from time to time, the atmosphere and the music alone are bloody wicked.

i am so tired of rockstar's business practices... they go silent for 3+ years and expect people to be content and excited with nothing but gta v online updates? where's the single player missions? i won't be supporting another rockstar game at launch, that's for sure... also, red dead was a boring and underwhelming game. let's hope rockstar is working on a new ip and not a remake to one of the most overrated games in history.

@Xristophoros: "I won't be supporting another Rockstar game at launch" said one guy, standing in an empty field, screaming injustice at the universe. C'mon man, historically it's one of the industry's brightest, most consistent studios. They take forever to produce new games, but the end result is typically very satisfying.

@sleepnsurf: gta v single player was great, but they didn't support it with any new single player dlc... they put all their resources into the online junk and that really irks me. nd on the other hand supported the last of us with an excellent single player dlc and will likely do the same with uncharted 4. they understand that not everyone is into online mp. as for rockstar, their egos have gotten the best of them at this point... gta 4 was a dreadful game... red dead was insanely over rated in my opinion.

@Xristophoros: GTA4 was brilliant. One of the best games ever created. Niko and his story were one of the best in a videogame. GTAV was a technical marvel but the story and missions were plop. Having 3 characters made it feel real short compared to other GTA games. And there were too many characters so their stories felt bland and unfinished. I agree about Red Dead. That was way overhyped. You spent far too much time fannying about on a horse. It took 10yrs to get from point A to point B.

@athleticguyuk: For me, Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games ever created. So, to you it might be overrated, but to me that sounds like one of the most ridiculous statements I've heard (it is certainly the first time I've heard it about Red Dead). I believe it blows GTA out of the water in terms of creativity and setting (post-San Andreas GTA anyway). I want to see Rockstar release another Warriors game. That and Red Dead are a couple of my favourite games ever made.

@westsiderz28: Because GTA and Red Dead are made by different developers. GTA games are made by Rockstar North in Britain while Red Dead is made by Rockstar San Diego in Merica.

Hoping for Bully 2, a RDR PC port, and a RDR sequel that is heavily inspired by the Witcher 3 on PC. Don't really care about GTA anymore, and I can't think of anything else that's any good from them except for that N64 sandbox game about fighting an invasion of alien bugs.
