GTA 5 Ships 70 Million Copies, as GTA Online Continues to Grow

Rockstar has regularly supported GTA Online with new content since launch.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K Games, reported earnings today for its fiscal Q2 2017 (ended September 30), providing an update on the company's business outlook. Among the key takeaways was that Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in 70 million copies (up from 65 million), while its online mode, GTA Online, continues to grow. Additionally, Mafia III shipped 4.5 million copies in its first week, while NBA 2K17 sold-in 4.5 million copies since its launch in September. Further, total shipments of games in the Civilization series have now reached 37 million copies (up from 35 million) in its history.

In terms of money, net revenue grew 21 percent to $420.2 million, up from $347 million during the same period last year. Leading drivers of revenue for the period were NBA 2K16, GTA V, GTA Online, BioShock: The Collection, and XCOM 2.

Revenue from digital sources jumped by 14 percent to $230.8 million, up from $202.4 million. What Take-Two calls recurrent consumer spending (virtual currency, DLC, and online game revenue), accounted for 31 percent of total revenue and 56 percent of digitally delivered revenue. NBA 2K16, GTA V, and GTA Online were called out as leading growth drivers in this area.

As for "bookings," which comprise physical games shipped to retail and digitally delivered revenue, this grew 28 percent to $452.8 million, compared to $353 million during the same period last year. Main contributors were NBA 2K17, NBA 2K16, GTA V, GTA Online, BioShock: The Collection, and XCOM 2.

Catalog sales alone made up $193.7 million of bookings, fueled by sales of GTA and NBA 2K titles.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a prepared statement that GTA Online, which came out more than three years ago, continues to see year-over-year growth in bookings. A year ago this month, GTA Online had 8 million players a week, though Take-Two has not updated that figure since.

Rockstar has regularly supported GTA Online with new content. Most recently, the developer launched a Halloween event for the game.

As for the aforementioned NBA 2K17, the game had a "record" first week in terms of shipments, but a specific figure was not shared. Additionally, Take-Two confirmed that Civilization VI has shipped 1 million units since launch.

Take-Two posted a profit of $36.4 million for the period, down from the profit of $54.7 million that it made this quarter last year. As of September 30, Take-Two reported that it had cash and equivalents of $1.175 billion on hand.

Take-Two is currently holding an earnings call to discuss these results. We'll report back with more information if anything noteworthy is discussed.

What do you think happens when you make quality products that you support...you enjoy the fruits of your labor and make money from it.

@edinko: Shut up. Just because they are still supporting these products doesn't mean they aren't working on anything else. Also, if the company didnt make money off these products they wouldn't be in business any longer. Go play COD and shut up. If companies listened to fanboys and Negative Nancy's like yourself they would be bankrupt within 2 years.

Multiplayer my a$$ !!! Played the hell outta the single player story on my 360, and returned it to my local Gamestop. I did give multiplayer a shot first but when I heard school kids rant, and swear at me for beating their a$$es in a race, and then force kicked me out of the server, I called it quits. I also re-bought the game on Steam, played the single player campaign again, tried multiplayer again; this time, a new breed of monster - HACKERS and CHEATERS on the PC version. So that's it for me. Plus, the whole thing R* pulled with the Shark Cards is outrageous to me as a gamer. Shame on R*, who will now annualize their famed franchises - GTA and RDR making them like Assassin's Creed and COD. This is bad news for fans of R* and their games. Not happy at all. It all points out that RDR2 will have a massive online mode and a poor single player campaign or lack of it.

I tried to play the GTA online and got bored quickly, it kinda sucks that GTA online is so popular that means we will see no more DLC from rockstar and now they will focus more on the online part of it and less on the single player, lets just hope they continue to make a great single player game if not I will just move on to other games I guess.

"net revenue grew 21 percent to $420.2 million" but "'bookings', which comprise physical games shipped to retail and digitally delivered revenue, grew 28 percent to $452.8 million", so the total revenue is 452,8 millions? Why make the separation between the two? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I just don't understand the terminology sometimes.

I can only assume this is being played by younger casuals the way Minecraft is played by kids. I played the on-line mode and, while it is leaps and bounds, better than any other online content I have played, quality-wise, there was still almost nothing to do.....how many heists can one do before it gets tedious? Please lord, I know they would be nuts not to try to mimic the success with RDR, but please deliver the same qulaity of experience RDR1 had....which is in another league from the drivel that the GTA single-player experience was for me.

@badtaker: X1/Scorpio, PS4/PS4Pro are the same platforms, there won't be separate releases on those.

that's right rockstar, you let this festering cancer grow and multiply into your future games.

as a company they have no values whatsoever anymore, it's a disgrace.

curses to anyone who supports red dead redemption 2 and lets this continue.

Fantastic game and amazing sales. Just wish they would have released story DLC for it too.

The next GTA game has a lot to live up to.

Still, hopefully RDR 2 will also be great.

@lunchbox2042: Agree, so greedy. Youd think with that much money, they just release everywhere they could, its cheap advertising.

@iandizion713: Sorry but nintendo is a console for children generally speaking. I mean Devils third got blocked in N.america and everytime there something remotely sexy in the *japanese version nintendo censors it for the western versions. Like fire emblem etc. The reason hardly anyone develops for nintendo is cause the sales are so bad. Rockstar is different too they don't even need to bother with PC cause their games are almost guaranteed to sell over 10 million on consoles.

@gamingdevil800: Nintendo america keeps trying to keep it kid friendly. As you said they censor most of the sexy games. but Nintendo Japan makes these sexy games for no so younger people.

@gamingdevil800: Devils Third released in America and Bayonetta is sexy as hell. Also majority who play GTA are kids. 3DS is leading console seller this gen. And no company sells games as good as Nintendo. Rockstar still releases on PC, just takes awhile since they have to get ready to allow mods and defend again pirating. But Rockstar loves PC, its modding community is free advertising.

@iandizion713: My point still stands that nintendo consoles generally speaking are for kids. Mario, Pokemon etc. And not enough adult games. i think by the time 3rd party devs release their games on nintendos console its so late on that the sales are doomed to be bad. Like watchdogs came out on wiiu months after everything else.

@gamingdevil800: strangel... all studies show that the average player of pokemon, Smash, MK, Mario Party, Pikmin, Splatoon, etc... is 30 years old... Your argument is ... completely invalid.
