GTA 5's Online Mode Has Generated Half a Billion Dollars - Report

The game's microtransactions are proving to be incredibly popular, apparently.

Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer mode GTA Online is free, but Rockstar offers optional microtransactions for players who want to speed up their progress. It turns out those microtransactions are proving wildly popular, reportedly generating half a billion dollars.

No Caption Provided

As part of former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies' $150 million lawsuit against Take-Two, it's been revealed that GTA Online has generated "at least" $500 million in revenue from microtransactions.

Now Playing: GS News Update: GTA 5's Online Mode Has Reportedly Generated Half a Billion Dollars

To put that number into context, Halo 5's microtransactions brought in at least $1.5 million.

"GTA Online has the potential to achieve the greatest profit margin of any game created in the GTA franchise," reads a line from the lawsuit. This is in part because GTA Online's microtransactions have "nearly 100 percent profit margin," except for development costs and fees collected by storefronts.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in November 2015 that more than 8 million people were playing GTA Online every week. He has also described GTA Online as "the gift that keeps on giving" as it relates to the money it makes from microtransactions.

As for the game itself, GTA V has shipped 60 million copies, according to the latest numbers from Take-Two. The lawsuit estimates revenue from the game alone to be in the area of $3 billion.

Single-player DLC for GTA V is still under consideration, but these incredible numbers for GTA Online may explain why Rockstar might not be rushing to get it out the door anytime soon.

Rockstar has kept GTA Online fresh since launch, constantly adding new content including more modes, items, weapons, and cars, among other things. Just today, April 12, Rockstar introduced a new mode called Inch By Inch and the Vapid Minivan.

Hopefully GTA 6 will be release for all platforms the same day so they can break their $1 billion in 3 days record.

If it wasn't for my friends wanting to play GTAV:O every once in a while I would have barely touched it at all. Now to see them add lame adversarial modes instead of something more substantial like more heists or quality of life content like a gun safe is down right disheartening. I love your games R* i really do but what you have done with the online mode lately is pure rubbish in my eyes. But I guess when you are making half a billion from micro-transactions alone you don't have to change jack-squat.

I haven't given up on DLC, not as though making DLC would cost a lot. It would still make a sh*t load.

@kyelo: Not a chance would it make a shed load of money, people would have to be compelled to actually buy it, while playing GTA online is easy as already owning the game. Extra work for free, not going to happen. GTA Onllne MT pay for those DLC updates GTA Online keeps getting up to 22 free update thus far, if each of those were paid for, how many folks would have bought all 22?

While Eddie could have said 500 million, he went for half a billion.

@Saladudo: lol that´s because Billion is a bigger number than million and people´s mind perceive it as a lot more than if he had said 500 million.

It´s a clever PR trick the eddie man is using.

I really gave the online part of the game a try... but it was impossible for me to get even a tiny bit of the feeling i got from the single player game...
Very long loading screens, constant connection issues... the open world is an illusion... tons of instances... with annoying loading screens etc... and when you not joining 1 instance or the next you got the dead city in which you run around and kill each other or some other shit...
Also the heists... oh man... pretty cool missions with one of the worst matchmaking, co-op, networking i ever seen.

P.S. I bought the game early on because of the promise of an awesome online mode that is why i am on the "attack", but on the positive side i had a lot of fun with the single player game and loved it a lot!

@kresa3333: gtaV has such a great single player experience that it's weird why they have totally neglected it. It got a 10 cause of SP not MP. Meh

@kresa3333: Yeah it's all instanced match type gameplay, I really wished they would have made more of an online "world" to live in, so to speak.

I feel like that kinda thing also applies to the singleplayer game as well, to some extent, and with each sequel I hope they'll address that. However it seems like they are content to do mostly the same thing and with the success of this online stuff there's even less incentive to try something new next time.

Maybe they can spend some of that cash getting an actual anti cheating software to run in their game, rather than inserting 10 mb of junk code, destroying cpu performance since ******* june!!!

Not bad, increased money for Rockstar means more freedom.

Also poor article, since if Rockstar was all about the cash, they would not go so long between each GTA, even GTA IV sold incredible well. So the reason why there is still no single player DLC might be because they are actually making a product they can be proud off and not just shit like Ubisoft or most other developers.

@Jacanuk: Except it doesn't mean more freedom, it means Take-Two is going to mandate that any future release has to have an online component for them to exploit. That's if they even make more games after this, if they can keep milking GTA:O with a trickle of light content they have no incentive to make a new GTA campaign.

@catsimboy: Not really , Rockstar is not obligated to follow Take-Two. As they have already proven again and again by not making GTA into a more "Annual" release. because do you really think that Take-Two has not tried?

And of course they have a incentive to make a new GTA single player campaign, GTA V sold 60 mill copies making them as the article says close to 3 bill$ while online has only made them 500mill$

Not forgetting that GTA online may have made that but it wont continue to make that, the online part will get old and stale faster than the game itself.

@Jacanuk: I seriously doubt the next GTA will have a singleplayer at all, with the success of GTA online, GTA 6 may very well be multiplayer and online-only, why waste time in a full fledged SP campaign when you can just make another GTA online and keep milking online players?

@roler42: Ehmm, im not sure how you would even begin to think that the next GTA wont have a single player.

Yes, the online part has granted a profit of 500 mill$ but that is based off a single player game which sold 60 million copies.... Not to A GTA that before it was out it went gold and in it´s first week made a cool billion. And even years after it initial release continue to sell.

Also considering that the max number GTA online had was 8million , it would not even begin to make sense why someone even at Take-two ceo level would go "ahh lets stop making GTA and expand on GTA V online´s part" Particular since the content in GTA online is not entirely new and the 1-2 new cars they bring out every 6months is not going to get people to pay.

My bet is also that those 500mill is earned within the first few months of each platform GTA V ´s release and it has dried up by now.

@alaannn: Ummm...it took more than 3 to 4 years of work to get that 750 million profit in a week. Not to mention the risk which is virtually absent with just adding small stuff to GTA:O

@alaannn: Sigh. That 500 million came at a fraction of the time and effort it took to get the 750 million in a week. And any source at all for your claim that it made 750 million in "profit" in the first week?

Here's a big middle finger to anyone who says microtransactions aren't the worst thing to ever happen to gaming. You think any of that money is going to be reinvested into meaningful content? Hell no. They're just going to make more lazy-ass car and clothing packs.

The new modes they add to GTAO are often times boring as hell I'd rather they add in new missions for us to do so we could make more money and add in new vehicles and weapons to spend it on. All the PvP stuff is boring. I also wanna see new heist come on Rockstar make it happen.

And this is why SP is dying, because real gamers are a dying breed; nowadays gamers are morons, and companies just want money

Even more sad is that, a couple of years ago, Dan Houser, in an interview, said the #1 thing for them when making a game is the SP. Guess that's over....even Remedy, a notorious SP developer, said they are thinking about making MP in the their next game; even Bioware, another notorious SP developer, was making (it got cancelled, thank god) a MP only game.

I'm eagerly waiting a new crash

WOW! If the numbers are even close, I can't blame them for not focusing more on SP DLC. They're obviously doing something else right as well, because I don't see too many people that play the game actually bitching about the micro-transactions.
