GTA 6 Costing $100 Could Reward Players Too, Analysts Argue

Wedbush Securities, with Michael Pachter, believes bundling the new game with GTA Online currency can push the price into new territory.

Rockstar hasn't even released a second trailer yet for Grand Theft Auto VI, but that isn't stopping analysts from again predicting that the highly anticipated game should retail for at least $100. This time, Wedbush Securities--alongside well-known analyst Michael Pacter--are arguing this premium price point could benefit players as well by bundling in GTA Online currency.

In a Wedbush industry note, a prediction is made that Take-Two will sell GTA VI "at a previously unheard of price point." The game company "can offer consumers an incentive to pay $100 or more per unit by rewarding them with a large amount of in-game currency to be spent in GTA Online," write Pachter, Alicia Reese, and Kade Barr. What's intriguing about this proposal is the fact it's unknown what happens with GTA Online once GTA VI launches. Last month, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick suggested that GTA Online could continue with GTA VI's release, but theoretically alluded to it as a "legacy title." Meanwhile, GTA V just received an enhanced upgraded on PC earlier this month, with the old version subtitled Legacy.

The Wedbush analysts point to how Call of Duty: Warzone (and mobile) have helped lead "to a 40% increase in sales of Call of Duty premium," though Activision and Microsoft haven't confirmed those figures. As such, Take-Two can utilize similar integration to boost GTA VI sales. The Wedbush group isn't the first to posit that GTA VI could cost $100, though proposing this high cost could reward players seems new. Additionally, last year Larian Studios director of publishing Michael Douse noted that GTA VI could prompt a shift to more expensive games. One thing usually left out of this discussion is the fact many big-name new games already cost more at launch with deluxe and collector's editions.

Research company DFC Intelligence believes GTA VI could sell 40 millions copies within 12 months of release, leading to $3.2 billion for Take-Two. The game's launch along with Nintendo Switch 2's release should help the video game industry rebound overall this year, per Circana.

GTA VI is still on track for Fall 2025, but Zelnick notes delays are always a possibility. A more specific release date could be coming into focus after Take-Two revealed Borderlands 4 will launch September 23; basically, October and November seem likely as release months for GTA VI. Pachter believes GTA VI could launch on Halloween, October 31, following a similar release pattern to GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Those three games also came out in October, but they were over 20 years ago, too.

Pachter being an idiot will likely never change, no matter what else does.

Honestly, selling GTA for $100 would reduce the number of people buying early, which could slow adoption of GTA VI Online. They couldn't get people for RDR II Online, and that was the normal $60.

The real money is in the online for GTA VI, and since only 1% of a game's playerbase pays out 98% of microtransaction revenue, the game has to move quickly if they want to supplant GTA V Online. A bigger market means a bigger 1%.

Rockstar made so much money from GTA:online that they are able to sink in this much for the production of VI. This does not mean they should be trying to recoup the elevated production costs from your entire player base.

By building this city, this world, this ecosystem, they're setting themselves up for the next 10 years to port this game on every platform that can handle it, and a bunch of these people will be playing GTA:online, paying for in game currency etc. So it's an investment.

Charging $100 for everyone for the base game when a large number of people are likely only interested in the single player story is not a wise / friendly move.

I suspect we should see similar things to the past where we see a cheaper base game $60-80, then more deluxe versions with bonuses and online currency included.

to try and sell the BASE version for $100 and give every player online currency thinking it'll make more people play GTA online will be a gamble. I personally would then be looking to wait for the game to come down in price before I bought it (I'm only interested in single player, and I have plenty of other games to play, I'm not interested in getting on the hype train)

The GTA Online currency is a TRAP to ger more people playing it... they sold 210 million copies of Five but at its peak less than 1% of those people ever played Online.

This particular game shouldn't cost more than $70 because GTA 6 Online will be another huge live service money printing machine. That's where a ton of extra revenue will already come from, so it shouldn't need to charge more up front.

If a bunch of GTA Online currency is bundled with the base game, it won't be seen as having much value if *everyone* gets it and can start with the same advantages.

Oh **** off.

When an outlet that isn't a securities company says the same thing, or customers make that argument in good faith, then I might listen.

But "Stock brokers say thing that will increase stock price is good for consumers!" is suspect.

I don't even buy any games at $70, I wait a couple years and have yet to buy a PS4 or PS5 era game for over $40. So I sure won't be paying $100 for anything.

Should big games like this be $100? Yes. Will I pay $100? Nope.

Video games are one of the only things that haven’t kept up with inflation. Considering games have been anywhere from $50-$100 since the SNES era, games are not as expensive as they should be, if they followed the price increase of everything else over the decades. If/when games do start hitting the $100 price point for a standard edition, my gaming days will either be over, or I’ll be waiting as long as I have to for them to go on sale. I’m 38. I don’t need to game, and I certainly don’t need to get games right when they come out. Feeling like you need a game right away, to where you’re willing to pay $100, is a young man’s game.

I don't play GTA Online. I don't want to pay $40 extra for some ridiculous in-game online only currency. I want a great Single Player game on a huge map like GTA is famous for. $60 should be the price for the game.

Ya they'll give you $10 million of GTA online dollars, but then in-game prices are ridiculously high.

The way I see it, we are already in the era of $100 games. Most major releases have a "premium edition" which is essentially just the base game, only tarted up with a 5 day early access privilege, a few useless skins you can't get otherwise and the promise of one piece of free future DLC if you are lucky. And i'm not even going to get in to the "limited collectors editions".

Yeah, I might not own this game ever if it releases at $100. A deep discount would still be $50. They are going to need to get it down to $25 or less before I'll buy it.
It'll come with the ridiculous Rockstar login issues as a bonus. I hate that stupid launcher. If you bought the game through Steam you should not need anymore launchers. Tell Ubisoft, EA, and Rockstar that. Steam is a launcher that verifies the legitimacy of the game copy. It is BS that these companies keep insisting on using a launcher to launch their launcher. It sucks.

When I first saw rumors of $100 gta 6, I believed it was possible. Then, I saw ol' wrong-80%-of-the-time Mikey p say it.

I'll just do what I always do and wait a few years for a sale, it doesn't bother me.

If they set a price point of $100 and it does well, it would be good for other publishers to remember that they are not Rockstar and their games don't have the power of the GTA franchise behind them. My point of course is, if anyone can do it, they can. But no one else has earned that right.

Now, I rarely pay full price just because games at $60/$70 now are just too rich for me. So I'm fine waiting the year to get some sort of discount. And thanks to my backlog, I have plenty of games (all bought on sale) to play. I can wait.

I’m waiting for the inevitable price drop since we all know it’s coming when the game doesn’t shift as many copies as Take Two was hoping for due to the $100 price tag.

@agent_stroud: this isn’t the one. You Will buy it.

The real game is how long can people pretend to have self respect and act morally superior to others.

GTA 6 will be the biggest game ever and YouTube will be flooded with “I finally caved and bought GTA” videos for a decade.

@greatquantum: I’m not buying it, so you’re already a swing and a miss not two sentences in. As for morally superior, eh, I have more self respect than letting Strauss Zelnick use my wallet as a doormat for his own personal amusement especially after the absolute scam that is GTA+. Wanna try again? 😏

@agent_stroud: unfortunately it will still sell. It’s probably the most hyped game of all time. But I feel like all these ‘analyst’ comments are industry plants looking to get a gauge on the market and try to gaslight people into applauding an overall increase in game prices. This isn’t just about take 2. Every publisher wants this to happen.

@dominicwow: There are definitely people that are waiting impatiently to buy the game. They will buy the game 1st day if they can afford it. They'll keep the price high until even the kid that had to save his allowance for 2 months to get it has it. It likely won't have a price drop anywhere for 6 months and it won't be in my range for a couple of years at least.
I have a huge backlog of some very great games. I've been on Steam for 18+ years buying all the cool games as they go on sale to the tune of 7 terabytes of internal storage in my machine and a few dozen games not installed. I turned 65 and retired last July. I am playing games and buying games now instead of just buying. I am playing Rise of the Tomb Raider right now. This series is fun. I finished the first one last week and I am halfway through Rise. I have Shadow of the Tomb Raider waiting. I have about a dozen Assassin's Creed games left to play. Like I said...for 18 years I watched sales and for 18 years I've purchased sales. I might not live long enough to play what I've already bought. If I play what I've already purchased I won't have to upgrade my PC for years. What a plan! Looking at Steam sales as I type this...

I suspect gamers will draw the line at paying 100 bucks for any game, no matter how impressive it may be. If this game does have a store/online price of $100 at release, and it does sell well at this price, other greedy publishers will follow suit and start charging a similar amount for their games, setting a precedent that will alienate gamers.

There was once this concept known as value for money, and it does not seem so long ago, new AAA games retailed at $40. Now greed is common place and they exploit the naïve to pay unwarranted elevated prices.

Hopefully common sense will prevail.

@robocoprocks: If it has minimum of 100 hours of base content, then it's $1 per hour which is cheaper than most other forms of entertainment.
