GTA 6 Could Prompt Major Studios To Delay Games - Report

Three "major" publishers could delay their upcoming games to avoid a clash with GTA 6.

Grand Theft Auto VI is coming this year, and it's expected to be a huge success with 40 million sales and $3 billion in revenue in its first year. Its release looms so large that some publishers are apparently considering delaying their games to avoid a clash.

Three anonymous "major" video game publishers told The Game Business that they are "ready" to delay upcoming projects due to GTA 6. The report didn't say what these companies are, but an anonymous boss of "one of the world's biggest game publishers" told TGB that Rockstar's releases "always suck a lot of money, and more importantly, time out of the market."

"We don't want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles," the anonymous executive said. Another unnamed senior executive at a publisher said even without GTA 6 coming to market, it's become "immensely difficult to find free time for new games to shine. Time is the real scarcity for us, not money. It's tough out there."

Two anonymous developers of "top 10 live-service games" told TBG that they are not planning any major updates to their titles around the time of GTA 6's launch.

One unnamed studio boss told TGB that GTA 6 is "basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear of the blast zone." A different developer said there is "no point" in trying to compete with GTA 6 and it might be smarter to "prepare to win players back once the excitement has started to die down."

GTA 6 is officially set for release in Fall 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but every Rockstar Games release going back a decade has been delayed, so it would be notable if GTA 6 is not delayed. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has acknowledged that GTA 6 could be delayed.

Publishers being wary of launching near GTA 6 is not a new concern. At the end of 2024, it was reported that many publishers were waiting to assign release dates to their own titles until Rockstar confirmed a date for GTA 6. More recently, an analyst said some companies might not survive if they don't properly plan their launch timings around GTA 6.

GTA 6 coming to market could also help lift the overall video game industry, as a game of that magnitude is expected to draw in new or lapsed players. Ubisoft, for its part, said it sees its own game sales grow when a big game like a new entry in the GTA series comes out.

In related news, Greg Rice of Day of the Devs and PlayStation recently said there is a fear that GTA 6 is "sucking all the space out" of the industry, but this might not tell the whole story.

GTA 6 is the first new entry in main series since 2013's GTA V. That game has enjoyed enormous success, selling more than 200 million copies and generating countless additional revenue from GTA Online.

I can absolutely see why companies would not want to go up against GTA6: marketing. A game as big as GTA6 is going to take up a large portion of advertising space close to its launch, it's going to take the focus of the majority of news outlets, it's going to be the videos and streams that a lot of content creators will focus on. GTA, as a franchise, can suck all of the air out of the marketing space before and after its launch. The fact that, to this day, GTA5 is still showing up on the best selling charts in the US should be enough to prove that GTA6 will absolutely be a force to be reckoned with.

It's nonsense to delay the release of a game just because of another game because of many reasons:

1) Not everyone has to care about that game and a GTA game is no exception.

2) People can play lots of games at once. For example even when GTA San Andreas released I played tons of games with it. My reasons was mood, a little boredom and I didn't want to finish the game too quickly.

3) It's a bit new generation greed reason: If they'll make it $100 people will play other games until the game is in discount. It also indicate possibility of for half a year its sale may be too less than expected. So-called experts anticipate certain numbers of sales for this game, yet their idea based on an era we have left behind long time ago. Now everything is expensive, even eggs and most of jobs are not enough to make a living. People started to give birth to lots of kids just to afford surviving by aid by having a children and making children work and all. It kinda turned out into new generation Victorian era no matter you living in America ducks yeah. :DDD

4) GTA 6 may require a system people cannot afford to buy for years, so they will buy video games they can play.

5) People may wait to have free relax days before they play GTA 6, until then they will play other games.

I mean I can give lots of reasons but you got the idea.

My personal opinion is: GTA 6 doesn't interest me at all so I won't gonna play it. If any company delay game because of GTA 6 then I'm not interested to pay money to them to not support their nonsense decision. I better play football on the street then lol. Everything is political now so any decision anyone makes can face strong backlash and political side. "I don't like the hairstyle of this CEO so I'll use their products the bomb their headquarters" are a new reality in the year of 2025 after all. :DDD

I personally don't believe any games should avoid collision with GTA6 week of release as every game has it's audience and some gamers will buy GTA6 day one, wait for a sale, or wait for PC version but I don't view GTA franchise as some Godly figure of a game. Let the people vote with the wallets.
