GTA 6 Release Date Not Being Revealed Yet Could Be Disastrous For Some, Analyst Says

"I'm certain some companies are going to tank as a result."

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be 2025's biggest release, but the game still does not have a release date. The lack of a release date could make this a stressful time for some studios, according to Newzoo's Ben Porter.

He told PC Gamer that because GTA 6 looms so large, the fate of other games and studios may depend on its release timing.

"If you're a game company who's holding its breath waiting for GTA 6 to get out, and then it gets delayed by three, four, five, six months, what do you do?" Porter said. "You either have to be able to launch into that big black hole that's been left open now, or you have to extend your run rate by an additional six months--I'm certain some companies are going to tank as a result of that, right?"

Porter agreed with companies like Ubisoft in believing that GTA 6's release may help "rejuvenate the market" overall. But at the same time, Porter doesn't believe GTA 6's launch will be "universally uplifting."

"Everybody that we're talking to, they're ships trying to move out of the way of this big iceberg that is GTA 6," Porter said. "Everybody's trying to pull their game forward, push their game back--their strategy is to get out of the way. So if that's what everybody's behavior is, then how do you believe that this is going to rejuvenate the games industry?"

In related news, Greg Rice of Day of the Devs and PlayStation recently said there is a fear that GTA 6 is "sucking all the space out" of the industry, but this might not tell the whole story.

At the end of 2024, it was reported that many publishers were waiting to assign release dates to their own titles until Rockstar confirmed a date for GTA 6. As of yet, that hasn't happened, and Rockstar has only said that GTA 6 will launch in Fall 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Strauss Zelnick, who runs Rockstar owner Take-Two, has said he cannot rule out a delay. After all, every Rockstar release in the past decade has been delayed, so it would be a break from tradition if GTA 6 is not delayed.

Whenever it's released, GTA 6 is expected to be a blockbuster success, with one company predicting 40 million in sales in the first year alone. The game is expected to come to PC at a later date, creating a second selling cycle for the open-world game.

If publishers were smart they would release this year anyone with half a brain knows that GTA6 isn't launching this year.

It's not coming this year so anybody ready with their games will be fine, anybody betting on its imminent release and pushing to first quarter next year is royally screwed when it sucks all the players' money and time out of '26's first 6 months, at least. They can release into that or sit on their game for longer than is financially viable.

The rejuvenation is everyone buying the new consoles that have been holding out, which from personal anecdotes is a whole lot of people. The main issue is there will again be new consoles in only 2-3 years lol

Remember when game devs weren't afraid of GTA and would release their game whenever they wanted, because they knew deep down they busted their ass making a solid game?

Nowadays, they're so afraid to launch their game next to anything anticipated because they know deep down it's complete and utter rehashed dog vomit. That's another boring as a fugging get out open would game, or a hero shooter.

It releases at 150.00 like I heard I hope consumers will push back on that. Who's to stop other publishers from wanting that price point? Heck the last great gta game i played was San Andreas I didn't even get into 4 or 5 maybe because I'm older and all that goes with gta doesn't appeal to me like it did when I was younger. It's just cussing non stop killing robbing and other stuff I'm good on it.

@fdlewisii:

TBH, I'm in the minority on this but I didn't think GTAV was anything all that special. It was "okay" but not the series of orgasmic experiences that some people seem to think it is.

There is no chance in hell that I'd pay $150 for the next game.

@fdlewisii: I don't think they will do the huge price hike thing, I think it will launch at the standard $70. Main reason being GTA 6 Online will be another huge live service money printing machine that will allow the game to extract a lot more than $70 per player on average, so it would be seen as beyond the pale if they also charged a bunch more up front

The quality of the game has already been decided. There is no way in hell a streamer is going to say something positive about the game when all the money is in “Negative Opinions”.

I’ve never seen a video touting:

“Where GAME succeeded and why the franchise is now Alive!!”

I can’t believe people haven’t figured this out yet.

I predict it'll flop and Rockstar will take THQ down and it'll get sold to Microsoft.

Simple, because it’s not coming this year and will be delayed. Very gullible and naive to actually think it’s coming this year! 🙄🤡

@fattiesgonewild: I don't think anybody is saying GTA6 will release this year, just that 2025 is still the official release date provided by Take-Two until they say otherwise.

@mogan: You haven't been to r/GTA6, then. Some people are protecting that claim like hungry badgers over a jar of honey.
