GTA 6 Release Date Probably Isn't In 2021

Take-Two's full-year financial results indicate that the publisher plans to release many games this year, but none of them are likely to be GTA 6.

GTA 6 probably isn't going to release this year if Take-Two's statements during a recent shareholder meeting mean what they appear to mean. Take-Two stated that it plans to release 21 games between now and the end of the fiscal year in March 22, which certainly sounds like a lot, but there are some clues that indicate Grand Theft Auto 6 isn't among them.

Once you dig into the details, based on what we know about Take-Two's plans, chances of GTA 6 coming this year are very slim. Take-Two stated in the earnings release that only four of those games are "immersive core" releases, which is the category that GTA 6 would certainly belong to. Only two of those games will fall into existing franchises, and we already know that WWE 2K22 and the new NBA 2K are virtually guaranteed to release this year, leaving no room in the cards for GTA 6. Additionally, if a high-profile game like GTA 6 were coming this fiscal year, you would expect Take-Two to reflect that more clearly in its fiscal forecast.

All is not lost, however. Take-Two further stated in the meeting that 19 more "immersive core releases" will follow in fiscal years 2023 and 2024, with seven of those being sports sim games and four of them being free-to-play. That means that GTA 6 could easily fit into those remaining slots, though we still don't know enough about the game's development to draw any firm conclusions.

Along with this GTA 6 non-news, Take-Two announced new GTA and Red Dead Online updates coming this summer, as well as revealing that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA 5 will release on November 11, along with the standalone edition of GTA Online for those consoles. Take-Two also clarified clarified that an announced NFL partnership game has been delayed to 2022, meaning that there are two new games coming from the publisher that we don't know anything about. However, we do know one of them is being developed by Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands.

They aren't going to say ANYTHING about GTA VI until after the PS5/XSX version of GTA V launches, and probably not for a few months after that, either. If there's going to be any kind of announcement I wouldn't bet on it happening before summer 2022. From that point, typically it's about 18 months from release. So sometime in late 2023/early 2024. And this is at the EARLIEST.

In other breaking news, the PS6 and Xbox Infinity or Whatever probably won't be coming out this year either...

Why make a new one when they’ve been milking the same one for so many years now? Sitting on GTA V has been the perfect mix of laziness and greed for them. They barely add to it, but designed it to keep funneling money through mincro transactions. The company has become such a complete joke at this point.

Did anyone honestly think it was coming this year? Wishful thinking at best. With Rockstar releasing an update for GTA V later this year we are probably at least 2 years away from GTA VI.

There is no probably about it. They still haven't even released GTA V for next-gen consoles yet, there's no way they're going to release GTA 6 before that. GTA 6 is DEFINITELY not coming this year or any time soon. They're going to milk the hell out of GTA 5/Online on PS5/XS consoles for a long time before they let a new game drop.

@DEATHWlSH: Unless they have dedicated separate teams working on multiplayer and another team to work on GTA 6 then it's possible. You don't need an entire dev team to work on the online portion of the game. Now it's just mainly about maintenance and adding some new content along the way for both GTA 5 and RDR2. Also if the main dev team isn't working on any RDR2 singleplayer dlc, then I wouldn't rule out they are already developing GTA 6.

As for work on GTA 5 on PS5/XS, this can easily be outsourced to a third-party dev. They've done this before.

GTA V has been out for 7.5 years now. GTA VI should be in the polishing stages by now.

Though I'm not really excited for this one. I figure it's going to turn into a FPS game with a weak campaign that just acts like a tutorial for the milking the gamer online component.

Rockstar was so quick to abandon single player in GTA V, I can't see it being any better for GTA VI.

@lion2447: Going to disagree and use RDR2 as evidence. Based on GTA V and GTA Online's success Rockstar could have easily skimped out on the single player story for RDR2 and instead focused on the online mode. Instead they created one of their most detailed and indepth worlds ever and arguably one of their best stories ever. The game also launched without the online component.

Even if you weren't a fan of RDR2, which I know some people weren't, it's hard to say that Rockstar approached the game any different than their past games as a result of GTA Online's success. They still provided an open world and story that was as good or better than anything they or any other developers have offered.

Why would it be released if Rockstar announced they will keep milking GTA5?

Of course it wasn’t when Rockstar finally announces the game or any game for that matter add on another year maybe 2 years when it actually gets released.
