GTA 6 Will Reportedly Only Be Out In 2025, Will Include Fortnite-Like Evolving Map

For those of you who have been patiently waiting for GTA 6, be prepared to wait a whole lot longer.

It has been more than eight years since the last Grand Theft Auto game, which is the longest gap between games in the series' history by a considerable margin. One leaker with a solid track record has shared some information, however, that says wait until Grand Theft Auto 6 releases won't be over until 2025--something which Take-Two's statements during a recent shareholder event backed up recently. It's no wonder they're bringing GTA 5 to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Tom Henderson--who previously leaked Call of Duty and Battlefield 2042 details--has released a new video and in it, he claimed that GTA 6 will be set in a modern-day version of Vice City. This runs contrary to previous reports that GTA 6 would be set in the 1980s, with Henderson claiming that developer Rockstar wants to ensure as much freedom as possible for its staff when it comes to creating content for GTA Online.

Henderson also discussed a potential for the GTA 6 map to change over time, similar to how Epic Games regularly overhauls its Fortnite map during end-of-season events. There was also a mention of GTA 6 having multiple playable characters, something which GTA 5 introduced to the series when it first came out. Even if these rumors are true, fans are going to be in for a long wait due to several factors. Henderson said that Rockstar has placed a greater emphasis on employee wellbeing in the wake of several reports detailing the crunch work conditions that were implemented before Red Dead Redemption 2 came out.

The new GTA is believed to be coming to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and, as they are new to the market, Rockstar is allegedly waiting for more systems to be sold so as to maximize sales. Henderson also added that since Rockstar wants to avoid delaying the game, GTA 6 won't be announced early and thanks to the constant revenue stream of GTA 5, Rockstar has the luxury of being able to take its time with development on this sequel.

It's worth being skeptical of any GTA 6 reports until Rockstar officially reveals the game, but these claims do line up with some previous leaks. To keep up to date with gaming's current Pepe Silvia, you can check out our hub of GTA 6 rumors and fan speculation.

Wait a long longer!? Who thought it was going to be released earlier? For me is good news, 4 years is like nothing. In my mind I was thinking about 5+ years at least.

The stupidest thing is to say it will be released for play5 or series x, by 2025 play5+ and seriesx2 will be a year old or 2 years old... obviously will be released for all those. THey should have said consoles and pc and not mention anything else. And by the way, if it gets a release for consoles in 2025, it wont be put for pc till 2026, like any other rockstar game. By 2026 play6 or next xbox would be announced and another year at most to be released, so it will stay old gen, but for pc players, with a patch for the next gen later or something like that. What I mean is, talking about which console releases may happen is stupid, as there will be new console hardware by then.

Can we actually go to space on this GTA … that would be cool if they had a planet feature . Also it would be cool if you could go to another country as well. Also get a submarine and launch a rocket . Make it happen guys . I know you can do it . You have until 2025 … geeez .. also connect a oculus mode . That would be awesome .

What they SHOULD do is change a formula that has been working really well. That always works out.

I hope it isn't online only. I do enjoy GTA online and all. I just prefer to have both. A good solid single player campaign and an online mode.

@deathtroll2: i think it has serious potential especially given the choices you get to make in the single player. do i buy this fast car and make this heist getaway easier? or do i buy a better gun? or do i get the car and team up with someone with the better guns? coop opens up more possibilities assuming the economy is realistic and fair.

the cell phone brings some realism to the coop that would mix well with the division 2 multiplayer mechanics. call for backup, offer help etc. they just need to implement a risk reward mechanic for coop.

i can see souls online mechanics also working well. hiring a another player to invade someone's game and kill them would be cool. covenants would work well. like you can only invade if you're apart of the hitmen club (hidden club in the open world you have to find)

it could be awesome but shark cards will probably ruin it (unless you separate pay to win lobbies from people who unlock through the game)

Looks like it might be like Valhalla where it's a single player game but they add/modify content over time. You can play Valhalla offline and never update it if you want. If they allow this here then fine. But if I'm forced to connect to a server to play the game, then no thanks.

@sebb: Yeah, I do not mind having to connect to online but it is when I want to to and if for some reason the internet is down. I can continue to play the game and not be locked out.

@lonewolf1044: Exactly. Of course a multiplayer game should always be online because, the whole point of those is to play with others, although some/most can be played solo. But for a singleplayer game I do not expect a constant online connection.

Well I'm just saying that, you know, if rockstar starting working on gta6 it'd be out by now. Just saying though. At least it's gonna be next gen only. But if we're gonna have to wait even longer I'd much prefer rdr3.

I just don't understand what people even do in GTA Online.
It's marketed, and people talk, like there's all this stuff going on all the time.
But you get into the game and there's nothing to do but rob gas stations, buy clothes, and spend money on yahts for some reason.

The original Vice City released in 2002 and was set in 1986. It was presented as a sort of fun time capsule, 16 years in the past. If the next Vice City were to take place in 2013, the year that GTA 5 was released, it would take place 12 years in the past. Seems crazy.

I’m not surprised but that’s12 years after they released GTAV. That’s just crazy.

I think the enhanced version needs to change things massively or there revenue stream may die very quickly

@cboye18: Agree, THey could still be great with VI imho, RDR2 was incredible, and they could learn something about it. If GTAVI adds a little rpg like san andreas, and 80h+ long sp story going straight to the point, without mp component in the sp experience, then it could be awesome. Rockstar is still promising.

Despite all that, they could turn into a live service kind of sp experience, and that would be horrendous.

@cboye18: I hate to admit it, but you are right. It's hard to replay V from the start going through 3 characters intro missions. Especially those long boring towing ones.

The problem was the map got too large without things to fill it, so taxi fast travel was used more than driving.

I hate to say it, but these companies are in the business of making money. If they put out GTA6 anytime soon that steps on the GTA V money. Now, I'm lucky enough to have a PS5 and PC with RTX 3070. Most people still aren't. They want that to happen before they ship.

@dmblum1799: By 2025 that hardware is irrelevant, ps5 would have by then a new revision so in ps5 you will play mid graphics, more or less the same as with that 3070. Nothing I care at all about though, but just wanted to point out.

@dmblum1799: Well based on your theory and how their revenue is almost guaranteed with GTA 5 and GTA Online, they could just keep re-releasing GTA 5 to some capacity and never release GTA 6 indefinitely. Ironically it is really up to the gamer and consumer population in the end if and when GTA 6 is made if Rockstar decides to make it indefinite and keep recycling GTA 5 because of how much their decisions in recent years have been based on revenue income. That's why I said earlier that there should be a boycott. Boycott all Rockstar Games GTA products until at least an official announcement about GTA 6 is made.

I remember playing gta1 and 2 back as a kid and thinking it was trash. A lot of people liked it though. Who knew Rockstar, that tiny puny dev would get so big that it could delay games by 12 years and still be ok.

@blaznwiipspman1: I still find gta1 and 2 my favourites. I don't hate all these new hyperreal type of gaming, but I play gta2 full completion every now and then (once every 3-4 years for sure) and feel too lacy to play again gta3, vice, SA, 4 and 5. Love gta1 and 2, and have fun as hell, a lot more than with gta5 that for sure, which i've played twice till the end already btw.

@ganondorf77: yeah I know a ton of people love the game. I couldn't get into gta1 and 2 no matter how much I tried. I always felt it was a trash boring af game. The gta game I played most was gta5 and that was at most 2 hours in before I gave that up.

Funny enough, I was a big fan of a game called sleeping dogs, that released back in 2012. It's been called a GTA clone, but I enjoyed it far more and even beat the game. I'm wierd that's all I can say.

@blaznwiipspman1: Yeah you would think that enough people would be boycotting games by Rockstar by now or start a petition to at least get more info on GTA 6 and ask the company to stop leaving everyone in the dark for almost a decade. Rockstar obviously puts themselves and their revenue before the gamer him/herself and they face no resistance at this point because they just expect people to keep supporting them and buy their games because of the kind of reputation they had back when they were putting out Vice City and San Andreas.

@mogan:The world is not as virtuous and humane as you think. The fact that they waited until 2021 to say that they need more time is enough evidence that all they really care about at the end of the day is their paychecks and taking extended vacation with their billions. Money talks. That is why Rockstar charges you to buy digital items in their games which should be free. Odds are that if Rockstar really needed to get another game out, whether it's another GTA, a new sequel to the Bully series, or anything else they have the resources and capabilities to do it. They simply do not care enough about the gaming community to even have a single announcement about the next GTA until 2021, almost a decade after years after the last GTA game was released. And then there's the thing about how they went soft with being political. They were not like this 15 years ago and neither was the gaming community. Both have become submissive and acting like everything is still humane when it is the exact opposite now. And remember that old announcement about how they had thousands of ideas about what to do with the next GTA. Meanwhile they still are releasing new clothing and weapon items for GTA Online to cash in on. Rockstar being humane is an oxymoron if I've ever heard of one.

@starchaser19981: Rockstar is a business; nobody said they were humane, but not making announcements about games they aren't ready to announce isn't disrespecting the community. It's Rockstar's prerogative to make their own decisions about their business. It was 15 years ago and it still is now.

@mogan: True. But it goes beyond them just being a lousy business. At the end of the day, they really don't care about the gaming community at all. Sega has said in interviews dozens and dozens of times that they have no plans to release a sequel system to the Dreamcast and everyone at this point got the clarification that they are, with a few exceptions, a software-based company unless their is some kind of further notice. Rockstar on the other end refuses to do any interviews or answer questions or provide any projections / predictions about GTA 6. And yes, I always got this vibe from them, even 15 years ago, that a good percentage of their company probably has a ton of people in it who don't even play or like video games or possibly even enjoy what they do for a living. It is not deep for them. They just like how their skills and concepts when applied to making video games blows up their wallets and enables them to take extremely extended paid vacations with millions of dollars still rolling in from re-releasing fundamentally the same game 3 times in three different generations and taking advantage of people by releasing skin and clothing packages by the thousands. All of that attention to juicing GTA Online could have gone to a new game which I believe at this point in time, practically everybody wants. It wasn't this bad in 2014 which enabled them to do what they did with the Xbox One and PS4 and still seem respectable to the least. Does this lousiness exist elsewhere in the world, of course, but Rockstar has been a shining example of this kind of abuse of power and control with GTA 6 and that has been my point since the beginning.

@mogan: And I just saw a video titled "We don't own game companies anything"

Well it works the other way around too. Most of us have played GTA's (some even RDR's and so on) and enjoyed them. If Rockstar wants to take a sabbatical or are focusing on getting ideas or even if they quietly pack their things and leave it's their right.

I sure hope no fan is waiting for GTAVI so much that it distracts from other things in life and world.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: It really isn't as simple as you or the documentary you saw are making it out to be. Meanwhile Rockstar is still charging people for things as trivial as clothing items and weapon packs which should be free just for buying the original game without lifting a finger. The next GTA would be out already if they weren't such good scam artists with GTA Online and you know it. Once again money talks and is the only thing that talks anymore in this sad, inhumane, submissive world. And I love how you are going after me with your last statement when I have not bought a single additional item from Rockstar other than buying GTA 5 once for the Xbox 360. I saw their corruption even with the GTA 5 upgrade for the Xbox One and PS4 and didn't support it even though it made sense because of their horrible timing with releasing GTA 5 on the soon-to-be last-gen systems.

They are almost like the Boston of the gaming industry except the band Boston gets the proper resistance from their fans for taking 9 years to put out a new album. Do you have any idea how long 12 years is? Some kid just born in 2013 will be in Jr High School by the time they are saying to expect GTA 6.

@starchaser19981: Not directed at you. But there are people who are borderline addicted to some game and send even death threats because they want to buy some microtransactions and whatnot.

Rockstar's reputation in my eyes has decreased dramatically based on abuse, crunching, whale milking etc. They have also lost people starting from Houser. But that's just more reason to say they can do what they want. If they don't create another GTA out of slaves' spines to hoard money from whales it can be even a good thing. At any rate Rockstar can make what game they want when they want.

It's sad because Vice City deserved the HD treatment and to be set in modern times like Liberty City and Los Santos. It clearly makes it sound like it will be set in multiple locations which expand and that more locations added on after that, possibly the entire US or other countries. And by 2025 the current generation of systems are going to probably be at the end of their lifespans if the current trend from the last generation continues.

I was originally hoping that they would do a map of the entire state of Florida and have missions that were based around the theme park industry in Central Florida and you could go on the rides and missions based around the government and military bases on the panhandle, etc.

Not surprising to hear GTA 6 is still a ways out. It also wouldn't be surprising if they went backwards in time considering one of the main creators said today's society and politics have basically devolved to the satirized versions they put into GTA 5(which were shockingly accurate for both sides). Basically they said 'Yeah, we don't know where to go with the social commentary at this point. It's already satire.'

An evolving map would certainly help keep the online fresh. I loved the GTA 5 map, but at this point, I just really don't find it that interesting anymore and the new island they added is a joke honestly. It's fun to get on and cause some mayhem for an hour, but then onto the next thing. Designing the next game with the intent of adding new features/places/geography(It took how long to get the Casino into the map?) into the map would really help them I'm sure.

It's a shame that these series are taking so long to come out with follow up games. I was in my mid 20s when GTA 5 came out and I'll be near my 40's by the time the next one comes out. That's an unacceptably long time honestly. That's kind of crazy considering the rate these games came out just a decade ago. I quiver at the thought of when the next Red Dead might be coming out.

I don't understand going modern-day again, other than the tech advancements that have been made since 5 came out. Vice city nostalgia was great but has been done. Would you go Sci-fi/Futuristic? Risky, but you gotta roll the dice sometimes. No risk it, no biscuit. GTA world? All the maps plus new ones? I guess we will see... someday...
