GTA Remaster Trilogy Rated, Suggesting It's Real

It appears the rumored remasters of GTA III, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA Vice City are indeed real, but nothing is certain yet.

More evidence has come to light that the rumored GTA remaster trilogy is real, and it's not just another anonymous source. Korea's ratings board has published a rating for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.

The trilogy not been announced, but it is seemingly the rumored remaster collection of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar is said to have originally planned to launch these remasters sooner but the COVID-19 pandemic affected those plans.

According to a report, the remasters are expected to be offered digitally in a package on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and mobile. Rockstar Dundee, the studio formerly known as Ruffian Games and known for its work on Crackdown before getting acquired by Rockstar, is said to be developing the remasters. The games will apparently run on the Unreal Engine, and the idea is for them to stay mostly true to their PS2-era origins but with better resolution and a new UI.

Another layer to this story is that, should the rumored remasters perform well, Rockstar might consider remastering Red Dead Redemption, the report said.

A spokesperson for Rockstar Games declined to comment.

While that game is not confirmed at this stage, we do know that Rockstar is working on bringing Grand Theft Auto V to yet another generation of consoles. A new edition of the celebrated and massively popular open-world game is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It was originally slated to launch in November before Rockstar shifted it to early next year.

I bought GTA San Andreas for PS4 (which is basically the PS2) version and I find it quite unplayable, thanks to the dated visuals and broken controls. It has to be 'remade' not remastered. The game deserves it. I don't care much about the other two, but they, too, should be remade.

Just upscaling the resolution and getting it on the newer consoles won't cut it.

It would have to be significantly better looking for me to buy it, and updated controls, like Vice City with GTA IV or V assets and graphics. I love the three games but if its just a fresh coat of paint on them, to give them an excuse to take down mods for IP legality, ill pass.

If I can’t speed across the Vice City coastline with some 80’s pop or cruise along in the hood of Los Santos with some Snoop & Dre then what’s the point?

Trailer for Dune released, suggesting it's real.

Water discovered on Mars, suggesting it's real.

A guy I went to high school with said there are RFID nannites in the vaccine, suggesting...social media should not exist.

What were we talking about? Oh yeah. I have a feeling this would be like trying to play Body Harvest again after all these years.

Why create a new game when they can release the same game over and over again. Rockstar has turned into EA Sports, no wonder the Housers left.

What a waste, remaster SA completely with modern controls etc. Forget the rest of them.

@Random_Matt: Dude, you didn't like Vice City? I'd say it's almost as good as San Andreas. VC & SA were legit. GTA III was the outlier imo

After attempting to play the 360 version of San Andreas as a back compatible game I'm not very excited about this remaster. The game itself was great back then, but game design has advanced so much. The improved visuals will be nice but IMO won't overcome going back in time to the old police system and a lack of other advancements GTA's made since these games were originally released.

Has Rockstar made anything new since RDR2? Have we even HEARD of anything new since RDR2? It seems they're content to just milk GTA5 Online until the heat death of the universe.

IMO Rockstar's setting themselves up for a huge letdown in the way they're handling this. Everybody in the gaming universe knows GTA VI is inevitable absent some incredible financial catastrophe that causes Rockstar to shut down, and the possibility of that is less than 1%.

It seems to me that Rockstar wants to remain as silent as possible about GTA VI and then say "Bam! Here it is!" At that point the hype is going to go into the stratosphere. It'll likely be a legitimately great game too. But when fans get their hands on it many will be disappointed because it's not the greatest thing in the history of entertainment.

@WarGameJunkie: a lot of key people from rockstar have left who’s vision made their games do great. I’m not convinced this is the same company they once were as a result.

Serious question... there is already the GTA Trilogy available with 1080p upscale, trophies/achievements, etc. So what is the point of this? Like what else could they even really do with an old PS2 game? I could understand if it was a remake in the style of RE2 or FFVII, but this just sounds like the "definitive edition" of the old rehash anyway.

Haha, indeed. At least make it so the controls aren't as horrible as the originals. The games weren't even really playable in my opinion until IV.

@ironhorse89: Or Vice City 2 or Las Venturas… with a Hangover meets Oceans 11 casino heist plot… so they’ll probably just rush out a GTA6 at some point with the focal point being online.

So I think it will happen, though not before V turns ten years old

@ironhorse89: they probably just view GTA V as a game as a service now and will just continue on with that till the milk runs out.

also with states cracking down on "crunching" i think Take2/Rockstar are probably hesitant on moving forward with any big AAA project at the moment, since they are one of the more notorious companies for applying crunch to its developers.

@alastor529: Excellent point regarding "crunching." It's likely one of many reasons why GTA VI hasn't happened yet along with the continued cash cow that is GTA Online.

@rodoxthedark: 3 and Vice City especially need that badly. Another issue is the soundtracks for the 3 games. Wonder what songs will make the cut due to licensing issues or will R* pony up and get ALL the songs back for the 3 games again.

I love these games but I have played through them so many times already. I know I'll wind up getting this because I keep rebuying San Andreas on every platform, but this will literally be my 14th time playing through San Andreas.

@ironhorse89: Maybe, but I literally just got done platinuming San Andreas on PS4, and getting 100% in GTA 3 is by far the hardest thing I've ever done in a video game. Some of the stuff like Ambulance missions & checkpoint mission Gripped took weeks of attempts. But I'm also assuming they'll fix stuff like this & the instant-death issues in the later GTA 3 missions, in the remaster.

All three won’t have their original soundtracks because the music licenses have expired. They just won’t be the same, especially Vice City without its awesome 1980s soundtrack.

I bought the GTA San andreas remaster on 360 and a load of music and radio content was cut from the game.

I would have been better off just replaying the PS2 original on my PS2 over component.

If I want to revisit them I'm happy doing so on my PS2 where all the original music is intact and they can be experienced the way they were originally intended to be experienced. The versions on the PS4 store are the actual PS2 games placed inside an emulator with probably some music cut out.

Just because they run on unreal engine means diddly squat. They'll just be upscaled versions like what's on the PS4 store and with most of the music cut out. Rockstar have been lazy for years and are just after a quick easy buck and cash in with minimal effort.

The only good thing they did since 2013 was Red Dead Redemption 2. One game in 8 whole years.

@mbsfaridi: Good advice thanks.

I just use a cheap component cable I got off ebay and it works great and am very happy with the picture quality.

A lot of people actually mix up component and composite. Composite is the crappy red, white and yellow cable and component is the good one with the red, green and blue and then red and white for audio. Only hassle with the component is in pal regions it doesn't allow you to play ps1 games on your ps2 but you can always hook back up the old cables or use an emulator if you want to go that retro.

@quinnd6: You’re most welcome :)

Yeah composite/RCA Cables are three wires that carry all the colours in one wire while component cables have them separated which gives superior quality.

Component cable is a must if one still uses composite cable.

Since Vice City and San Andreas came during a gaming down time when I wasn't playing as many video games, they are on my list of missed classics, so I'm very much hyped for new gen remasters.

It'll be interesting when this gets released as I would think Rockstar wouldn't want it too close to the GTA V next gen release.
