GTA Remasters Will Only Happen if They "Look Great Creatively," Exec Says

GTA remasters will only happen if it makes sense creatively and will "delight customers."

During Take Two's earnings report today, the Rockstar Games parent company was asked if it had any interest in remastering the Grand Theft Auto titles that originally released on PS2. Take Two responded, saying that it "wouldn't rule it out," though it would likely decline if it was just "to make a few bucks."

CEO Strauss Zelnick said that it's "something [Rockstar Games] will decide in due course" and that it "wouldn't do anything that's not going to look great creatively."

"The starting point is, 'Is this going to delight customers, is this going to look good?'" Zelnick asked. "You know that we're a company that is not driven first and foremost by 'Can we create revenue this way?'

"We would start by saying, 'Will this be exciting to consumers, will they be happy with it, will it reflect well on our brand, will it reflect well on our company?'" he added.

"And if the answer is yes, then it may well be a compelling opportunity. But if the answer is indifferent or no then even if we have an opportunity to make a few bucks we probably would decline. I think that's the lens through which we look, the actual decisions are made by the labels [Rockstar and 2K]."

In the same earnings call, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto V has shipped 65 million copies. Additionally, Rockstar will announce new games "soon," though you shouldn't expect anything new from the developer this year.

Take Two also talked about what it would do regarding any PS4 and Xbox One hardware upgrades.

"In general, these are all opportunities. Depending how things pencil out, a successful new console gives us another opportunity to release titles whomever it comes from," he said. "We think the people who win most are those that are the most creative, the most innovative, and the most efficient--and that's what we aspire to be."

The company also talked about 2K's Battleborn and how it's too soon to tell if the new first-person shooter will be a hit like Borderlands.

If they remastered San Andreas, and did it like GTA V, i'd buy it without hesitation. If they added the first person perspective and updated the weapons graphics and sound effects, i'd buy it without hesitation.

I'd love to see them revisit Vice City for a new game but a remaster I'd play the hell out of. San Andreas is just insane, a remaster with even PS3 graphics would be mind boggling.

Don't really need a remaster for the GTA's, even though I wouldn't mind Vice City or GTA3. Continue to make great games and move on to GTA 6

Read Dead Redemption on PC - Now that is something I would like to see. I actually missed out that title for some dumb reason, although I've played it a bunch of times at my friends place. A PC port running on GTA V's version of the engine would be freaking sweet.

Put all 3 in the same game running on the GTA V engine.

New graphics and cover shooting and the ability to travel to all 3 cities would be awesome.

I'd take a Vice City remake, with a few more options. Let me purchase a house near the water so I can drive my collection of boats around. I'd take a SA remake as well.

I would love a Vice City remake. I think people forget how insane the cast was for that game. That 80's Miami theme was perfect. I remember that night club, Love Fist, that motorcycle rooftop mission, and that huge mansion. That game was my favorite in the series, but it's before they figured out proper controls. An updated version would be huge.

I'm not the biggest fan of remasters or remakes in general, but it took Rockstar Games a long time to really start making things look as good and play as well as they do now. So they have really great games from the PS2 era that don't hold up too well and have strange controls. The stories, cast, themes, and open world gameplay are all there, so it would just be cool to see that stuff with Rockstar's current tech. I still remember those block hands...lol

Well with all the ports & compilations for pretty much everything imaginable, HD remakes are unecessary at this point.

What they need to do is give us a new city and not rehash the same 3 to death.

No new titles this year? I can appreciate they take their time with video games, but my goodness, with over 900 employees and 7 studios, it's amazing they haven't announced a Red Dead Redemption 2, Max Payne 4, GTA 6 or Bully 2 yet.

I bet Leslie Benzies leaving has a big part in their lack of production.

@wanderingknight: I have to disagree there. Most gamers don't know what's he's done for Rockstar. The reason the GTA franchise and Red Dead Redemption are what they are today is mainly because of Leslie Benzies. Sam and Dan Houser had a big part, no doubt since they founded Rockstar, but emails exchanged between Sam and other employees even revealed how much Benzies brought towards the company and its games. You can't just replace a producer like that.

Rockstar Games losing Leslie Benzies is like Konami losing Hideo Kojima. It's a huge void and it's next to impossible to fill it, let alone surpass it.

@anevilwithin: Well, considering how much GTA has evolved since GTA3 I don't think anything was lost. Dan Houser actually writes all the stories and his ability to write around anything is uncanny and unsurpassed in video games. Red Dead Redemption has the best script in any game I've ever played, save for maybe the Uncharted series.

@wanderingknight: I think how Red Dead 2 and GTA 6 pan out will decide how much of an impact Leslie had though it will be difficult regardless to overcome the expectations their predecessors set.

I agree about the writing in Red Dead Redemption, reminds me of Amy Henning's and Neil Druckmann's magical skills.

Vice City in the shiny 80's style with up to date graphics would look awesome it's just providing they can get the original songs on license because it wouldnt be the same and didn't the PC version or latest re-release have certain songs taken out.

You only have to pay for short cuts.

I don't think it will be worth it. The stories in GTA are always decent but most of the time you are messing around in the city sandbox. Once you've seen a city sand box you've really seen them all.

GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas all remastered to roughly the same quality will just feel like three of the same game with slight differences.

I went back to Vice City not long ago and all I was really thinking was "The music is great but honestly there is nothing here that I can't do in GTA V and V has a lot more to do on top of that.".

Why aren't they doing what they said before GTAV even released and developing Liberty City etc for GTAO? Oh yea, because stupid kids keep buying shark cards to purchase superfluous cosmetic DLC that they churn out because you keep paying for it.

Normally I'm against when people say remasters are a waste of developer time or whatever, but knowing Rockstar, if they redid older games they'd probably start from scratch.

@camou504: They weren't remasters as such. The graphics were 'tweaked' but t is a similar method which DVDs used on a Blu Ray player are upscaled to High Definition and doesn't really make those games remasters at all.
