Guardian of Light, Borderlands DLC hit PSN
PlayStation Store Update: Sony's virtual marketplace adds isometric Lara Croft title, fourth Borderlands expansion pack, Swords and Soldiers, Rapala Pro Bass Fishing, multiple demos.
Last week Sony updated its PlayStation Store on Monday, a day before it usually does. This week, the company returned to its regular schedule and released the first download-only Lara Croft title, a fourth content expansion for Borderlands, and more.
Leading the pack is Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light ($14.99). From series developer Crystal Dynamics, Guardian of Light is the first download-only installment in the 15-year history of the franchise. The game casts players as the adventurous Lara, trekking through lush forests and dark caves and fighting off assorted pugnacious foes. Unfortunately, the title does not support online cooperative play presently, but Crystal Dynamics promises to patch it in at a later date.
Guardian of Light will receive five add-ons, which will be made available from October through December. The first three will be expansions featuring new "puzzle, exploration, and combat experiences," while the last two will include new playable characters for the game. Crystal Dynamics did not say who the characters would be, noting only that they will be well-known figures pulled from a range of Eidos titles.
And for those looking to add to their existing games, Gearbox Software this week released the fourth content expansion for the sci-fi shoot-and-loot game Borderlands.
Announced in early August, Borderlands' Claptrap's New Robot Revolution ($10) content adds multiple new missions and enemies--including Claptrap-ified monsters--to shoot and loot, as well as new boss battles. Additionally, the content lets gamers earn an additional two skill points (for a total of 61 possible points) and three supplementary backpack slots for holstering more weapons.
Would-be purchasers should know that Borderlands is getting a Game of the Year edition on October 12, which will include all previously released downloadable content for $59.99.
Sony also ushered in Swords and Soldiers ($9.99) this week. The side-scrolling 2D real-time strategy game from Ronimo Games features three factions (Aztecs, Vikings, and Chinese) fighting over a giant pepper. Each faction wants the pepper for different reasons, which ultimately leads to battle. Its developer describes the game as a mix of RTS and fighting, where the ultimate goal is to build units and cast spells until the opposing castle is bombarded and destroyed. The title was warmly received when it was released on WiiWare in June 2009.
Switching to the PSP download hub, Sony added Rapala Pro Bass Fishing ($19.99) to the store this week. The angling title thrusts players into a competitive tournament experience set on North American freshwater ponds and lakes.
For those wishing to try before they buy, Sony added a number of demos this week to its virtual marketplace. Gamers can now try their hand at EA Sports MMA, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, MySims SkyHeroes, the PlayStation Move version of Heavy Rain, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team, and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.
For music gamers, Guitar Hero welcomes songs from Soundgarden's Telephantasm album, and Rock Band adds an eclectic assortment of tunes from My Chemical Romance, Anthrax, 30 Seconds to Mars, Atreyu, Buckcherry, and The Doobie Brothers.
A full list of the week's deals and new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, discounts, and add-on content, is available on the PlayStation Blog.
