Guardians Of The Galaxy Cast Voices Strong Support For James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy cast get behind the series' director James Gunn.

In recent weeks, there has been all kinds of controversy around the firing of director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because of some old but explicit tweets. Many actors and industry people in general have since spoken out in favor of the director, but now, the entire central cast of Guardians of the Galaxy has signed a statement supporting James Gunn. [Update: Despite the letter, Disney reportedly is not inclined to rehire Gunn.]

The statement does not explicitly call for the reinstatement of Gunn, nor does the letter express any kind of support for the jokes that were made, but rather speaks to Gunn's character and how liked and admired he is by the cast in general. The letter also talks about the court of public opinion, saying, "James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial." Chris Pratt and others have posted the letter to Twitter and Instagram, where Pratt said he would personally like to see Gunn reinstated.

Now Playing: Guardians Cast Writes An Open Letter On James Gunn - GameSpot Universe News Update

Essentially, the letter communicates that even though Gunn made some poor choices in the past, that doesn't make him a bad person. They aren't necessarily asking for anything, but instead, they discuss the dangers of mob mentality, and express their hope that people will learn from this and be more careful what they post online.

Instead of signing the letter as the franchise's cast, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, and Michael Rooker, all signed their names to the statement as, "The Guardians of the Galaxy". Bautista and Rooker had already made their feelings known about the decision, but now it seems that the cast is showing solidarity on this issue.

Gunn directed the previous two Guardians films, both of which were very successful, and his firing has sparked a conversation questioning how fair the consequences can be when it comes to posting on social media.

The complete letter reads,

To our fans and friends:

We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we've been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.

Being in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has been a great honor in each of our lives. We cannot let this moment pass without expressing our love, support, and gratitude for James. We are not here to defend his jokes of many years ago but rather to share out experience having spent many years together on set making Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2. The character he has shown in the wake of his firing is consistent with the man he was every day on set, and his apology, now and from years ago when first addressing these remarks, we believe is from the heart, a heart we all know, trust, and love. In casting each of us to help him tell the story of misfits who find redemption, he changed our lives forever. We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than now.

Each of us looks forward to working with our friend James again in the future. His story isn't over--not by a long shot.

There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it's safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.

It is our hope that what has transpired can serve as an example for all of us to realize the enormous responsibility we have to ourselves and to each other regarding the use of our written words when we etch them in the digital stone; that we as a society may learn from this experience and in the future will think twice before we decide what we want to express; and in so learning perhaps can harness this capability to help and heal instead of hurting each other. Thank you for taking this time to read our words.

The Guardians of the Galaxy,

  • Chris Pratt
  • Zoe Saldana
  • Dave Bautista
  • Karen Gillan
  • Bradley Cooper
  • Sean Gunn
  • Vin Diesel
  • Pom Klementieff
  • Michael Rooker

The only two ways that I would be comfortable in James Gunn being rehired are either that Disney admits the company itself has made movies that are now considered inappropriate such as Song of the South and rehire him based on forgiveness (unlikely), or that these methods of character assassination which have been a favoured tactic of the left until one of their own was put on the chopping block are unilaterally dropped (also unlikely). Otherwise I don't think it's fair that someone should get a free pass just because they made you laugh.

This whole situation is very dishonorable.

If I had been judged today by my mistakes 12 years ago I would never be considered a master ninja. People evolve over time. It took years of training with master Zenyatta for me to become as strong as the dragon.

@genji_shimada: All jokes aside due to Genji lore, you bring a good point. Essentially what Disney is saying is that they have zero tolerance and zero forgiveness for anything. And while that may work for some, the notion that you cannot be forgiven for some bad jokes you made a decade ago is silly. If Gunn committed a heinous crime, sure, I can understand firing him and never looking back. But something as minor as terrible jokes posted on the Internet, where probably far worse jokes were made? I feel like after a decade someone can grow out of that 'phase' and be a different person.

It's also ironic considering forgiveness is a major theme in many Disney films, and yet here we are not even practicing what we preach. To add fuel to the fire though, it seems like a lot of the cast members and other affiliations trust Gunn and believe he's different compared to a decade ago.

Basically we are punishing someone whose changed themselves for the better, for changing. This just seems wrong.

I think it's unfair to judge a person by their past self, or even these "dark" jokes. It's just a radical behavior... These are just jokes man, lol people are so sensitive. I used to make jokes with my black friends, even joked about the KKK. It's something so dumb.. I know some people can really fell offended by it, but this is not fascist Italy or something (at least I hope so, I don't want the SJW thing to get this far). It's not classy, it's ugly, etc. I get all that, but I believe every individual is free to do whatever they want. let them love, let them hate, etc... With time, the individual can learn. Like my example again, I stopped making these dumb racist jokes not because I am afraid of the social justice bullshit, I stopped because I realized this is not something healthy to do, I learned instead of being forced. You can't fight hate with more hate, because radicalism is not something positive at all, doesn't matter the subject. Progression should be something natural. Disney with their hypocrisy of being a "family friendly" company, this is more disgusting than Gunn's jokes tbh

@gleencross: KKK jokes are pretty tame.

"Man, the KKK is persistent! How can we ever get rid of them!?"

"Well, it's easy. Give a power pellet to Pac-Man, and he'll gobble them all right up!"

It's a KKK joke that won't offend anyone.

@kaminobenimizu: We joked about a white sweater/hood of mine who had a "pointed" shape, it's kinda hard to explain because english is not my first language, lol But that thing really looked like the KKK "uniform". Also, things like "we burn a tree yesterday, good times" and racial jokes in general (like the 12 years as a slave movie was a good comedy, shit like that). There was a very sensitive dude in the group that we just liked to troll him with these lame jokes. Not a good behavior, of course, especially for a bunch of 20+ years old dudes. We are supposed to be matured already. But like I said, I learned with my mistakes. Here in my country (brazil) we don't really know the KKK, only stories about them. Also, my country was one of the last ones (if not the last one) who abolished slavery. We are not as racists as americans, but there's still a lot of racism here. So, even if you joke or troll, it's always a sensitive subject. Better to leave it alone, that poor dude never did anything wrong to us, we just liked to torment him because of his victim obsession. In the end, this is just childish and a past behavior. Also, I got involved with a lot of mixed girls, it's brazil after all, it makes no sense to joke about any race because we are basically a giant mix of every race you can imagine, it's just too hypocritical lol Also, I lived a long time in Portugal, they joke about us all the time (and vice versa), I witnessed how most europeans hates france's petulance, etc.. Humans will always find ways to create some sort of conflict. Some people joke about these differences, others take this shit seriously.

@gleencross: Ahhh...! Well, if it was like that, I can understand why you said that you changed.

When I do jokes on races or cultures, I make sure they are actually not offensive, even when the subject might be sensitive. Like that KKK joke, for example. Sensitive subject, non offensive joke.

Of course, there are those that will be offended by the fact I joke with sensitive subjects even if the result is not offensive, so I can't do much in that regard

As for your english, it's not too bad. You could perfect it in a month. It just needs some tweaking.

@kaminobenimizu: Well, in the end I was not trying to not be offensive, for the contrary. It was pretty much a case of bullying. I really despise people with a victimized mentality, the victimhood so to speak (idk if that's the proper term in english). But if the person is acting like a victim just because of their skin color, it's also stupid for me to bully this person, in the end it's just idiocy from both sides, lol I remember those days and I honestly laugh about it. I don't fell guilty, neither with this sentiment of "trying to not be offensive". It's over, it's in the past. Just like the Gunn situation, what the guy (or anyone really) did in the past, it doesn't really matter if the individual changed for real. It's literally another person, not the same idiot. And I occasionally use these games (and basketball) forums to train other languages, it's less boring that way, lol but when talking about these current social issues, the social justice bullshit and all that, I believe it's fair to admit your past mistakes and how you learned to be a better person. When social justice forces you, now that's wrong. And it seems you try to not be offensive because of an outside pressure, idk. In this day and age, how can we judge what is offensive or not? It seems everything is offensive. Not so long ago people were "accused" of being sexists just because they didn't find the new ghost busters funny, lol That's how crazy modern society is. With this mentality of not trying to be offensive, maybe you would not make jokes about how bad ghost buster truly is, fearing some kind of retaliation?

@gleencross: Yeah, many are yapping, but they are a loud and obnoxious minority, so there's nothing to fear. Also, be careful about branding others obnoxious SJWs.

There was a normal journalist at GameSpot that wrote a seemingly "extreme" social justice article about Kingsman 2, and got backlash. He had to close comments on his article. So I contacted him about the article.

He was leaning toward social justice without being part of the obnoxious sub category we see far too often. So if you see someone that seem like an SJW, don't lump them too soon with the obnoxious crowd.

Even The Marysue, which is known to be very "SJW" in general, actually called BS on a company's "feminist" (more like failinist) antics about Captain Marvel themed shoes.

https://www.themarysue.com/captain-marvel-shoe-controversy/amp/

We have more allies than we think. Many that seem like obnoxious SJWs are cool enough to agree to disagree instead of name flinging like their sub category.

I gave the GameSpot journalist as an example, and the writer of The Marysue's article as well.

My attitude of not being offensive while sounding like I am has been one of my trademarks since ever, but now I would be deemed offensive no matter what. Lol

For the latest Ghost Buster, yeah, it's a shame. Especially for the director. He wanted to make something but both extremes trashed him and his movie, by bickering about it, thus, making many not want to go see it. Well, the bickering amplified the sentiment that was already there to begin with.

For more knowledge about what's happening, you can check Yellow Flash, Diversity & Comics, and TheQuartering. They cover a lot of obnoxious SJW things while making us discover enjoyable products from time to time.

When the left's tactics of weaponized mob gets turned on them, only then they see how dangerous it is. Will they learn? i predict not. They are more likely to double down while protecting their own with a double standard.

@Cikatriz_ESP: How have i doubled down? Do you know what the term means? I also never said anywhere that people werent capable of change. Why are you making things up? I am open to discussion and debate, but do it honestly and intelligently.

Do you see where i said this tactic is dangerous? My whole point is that this needs to end for everyone. Hold everyone to the same standards and let's stop over-reacting and feigning outrage whenever someone you consider an opponent says anything that can be considered "offensive". All while ignoring when it is someone on your side. Let's bring back sanity,

@Cikatriz_ESP:

Normally i would agree with you about this.. I HATE this kind or moralizing.. but when it comes down to tactics this dangerous, you can't sit back and let one side use it over and over again, for pettier and pettier reasons, and do nothing but continue to take the high road and just point out and complain.. like it or not, the standards were set long ago.. all sides are just applying them now! This tactic's use was about nothing more/less than silencing and punishing anyone who dare disagree with the extreme views of some on the left.. pushing, no forcing people, very publicly, to either submit and shut up and go away or be ruined.. If nobody on their own side is going to stop them, then there's only one option.. making the continued use of the tactic so painful, so costly all around, that nobody could use it at all. And thus here we are.. the right and the middle going total war on this issue too.

I sincerely hope that this was enough of a wake up call for everyone, on all sides to take a stand against this kind of pointless outrage based "call out" bullshit.

@James_xeno: It won’t be a wake up call, because that’s not how it works. One side goes overboard, the other side grows bitter and counters using the old “taste of their own medicine” justification, then rinse and repeat.

Conservatives are fulfilling their role as pawns in the same game that has defined American politics for almost a century now—and then it will be the other side’s turn. It’s a petty game of back and forth, like two children bickering in the back of a car on a road trip, and the only reason it continues is because we allow it to. We willingly and fervently adopt the same “us vs them” mindset as the generation before us, and nothing will change until we make a conscious effort to act like adults.

The odds of Gunn getting his job back is incredibly slim given it's Disney, but I wish him the best of luck regardless.

He did say some pretty sketchy shit. I'm not a fan of knee-jerk reactions, though. It's hard for me to decide where I fall on this issue. I understand that Disney feels they have a certain image they have to uphold.

So I've been rewatching a lot of Robot Chicken lately and I'm reminded at how they show or strongly hint at the same sort of things that James Gunn got fired for. What's the difference? Is it that Robot Chicken is on Adult Swim and James Gunn works for Disney? When he wrote those tweets he worked for a company much more "offensive" than Adult Swim.

@mboettcher: Well, if you work in an adult bakery you're allowed, encouraged to make naughty pastries. But if you move to a normal bakery and do that, you probably won't work there anymore.

Even in that I could see past being an issue. If someone showed all the customers a pic of the cakes you've done in the past, I'd assume many would say "I don't want to buy from a person who has made stuff like that, we have kids etc"

That's not to say I think this is a good thing. Things like time and context should be taken in consideration.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Sure, except in this case the "normal bakery" already knew about his previous employment and he already identified and apologized for his most offensive cakes. I agree that it puts the bakery in a tough spot, though.

Well it's good to see that people are taking a stand against this radical behavior. People have been recently ostracized for things like this and to think all it took to turn the tide was risking the future of a space raccoon movie.

Had he made them 2 weeks ago, no one would stand for him right now.

As far as the cast goes, they're all replaceable.

@Barighm: While I didn't want James Gunn to get fired and don't think he fully deserved it, I've seen the tweets he posted. If I had read the tweets at the time of posting, I can imagine thinking, "this guy deserves some sort of comeuppance. Karma is going to bite his ass one day." Inevitably, this is what's happened.
