Guillermo del Toro's InSane revived

Pan's Labyrinth director's action game finds new mystery developer after being canceled by THQ.

THQ may have dropped filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's action game InSane, but the project has found a new developer. The Pan's Labyrinth director told IGN that he had shopped the game around to numerous developers and it is now back on track.

No Caption Provided

"We were going to go to a lot of developers after THQ, but it seems like we’re going to be developing it after the first meeting we had," he said. "I can't disclose where it was, but we went to a great developer on the first meeting and it seems that they’re picking it up because they love the package."

In October, del Toro was asked which studio would be a "dream developer" for InSane, and he responded with Half-Life and Left 4 Dead company Valve. He said he is a "big fan" of the outfit.

Concerning how far along in development InSane is, del Toro said at the time of its cancellation at THQ in August, the game was in "good shape." The world, the creatures, the levels, and the story were all in place, he said.

Despite that, InSane is not likely to ship anytime soon.

"We were two years away. The development span of a game like this is three years. We put a good year and a half into it and we have the universe quite figured out, but we are now going to take that and start doing all the leg work with coding it, creating the engine, and starting to test it," he said. "It’s going to take a good two years of modeling and rendering and creating the environments and all of that. The basic tenants of the game is that it’s created, but now we’re going to need to start actually making it."

InSane was also previously revealed to be a trilogy. Del Toro would not say if this was still the case, noting that he is more concerned with making a "great game" than planning anything out that far.

I really like Guillermo Del Toro's movies, he's very good at creating a spooky horror vibe, so I'm glad that this game is alive again. It's too bad that it was canned by THQ, but the good thing about games (as well as companies and employees) is that they can rise again. I hope this game can immerse you into a similar spooky vibe as his movies.

I haven't enjoyed a horror game since Clive Barker's Undying. Since I'm Swedish I have of course heard about Amnesia, but I want to be able to fight back against the monsters. It doesn't have to be easy, but I want an action element, like Undying had.

I think Activision is making the game because they use the word Insanity in Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3.

If it was a great game, it wouldn't need a trilogy. Movies are one thing because of time constraint, but games can have over 100s of hours.

I have been hoping for a good, well written horror game for years. I have been let down by many. The zombie genre was pretty cool, but I wanted some good ole fashioned DEMONRY. I thought Clive Barker's game, "Jericho" was going to be awesome when I saw development, but it was kind of a let down after release.. I am very confident that this guy would pay huge attention to detail, like he does in his movies. This guy is a creative god. I love his work.

As long as Del Toro is directing the artistic aspects of the game and letting the game developers work on the game part. I still have high expectations for this game.

It better be worth playing and by that I mean under an M-rating. We're not so idiotic as to accept that mystery and suspense owes anything but bitter rivalry and animosity toward elements which merit an M-rating. I so wish we could grow up and leave this pitiful rut, we could be so much more as a society and that would include gaming, and yes, that means better suspense and especially psychological games...But for that to ever happen we would have to reverse this reverse evolution we are undergoing as we as a society chase disgusting lusts.

@Bl4KD37H Wow, really? Hellboy1-2, Blade 2, Cronos, Pan's Labyrinth were all awesome movies! He is my favorite director, so yeah I'm a little biased, however I'm sure I'm not the only one to tell you that you are terribly wrong.

I honestly think the game is getting far too much hype, Especially for one that is still a good 3-4 years away from seeing the light of day. So, I am simply gonna kick back and relax and wait to see if they actually continue making the game or bench it once more.

Del Toro always bites off more than he can chew. He has about 20 projects announced post-2008 and not one has come close to the light of day. I don't see this one being much different, though I would love to see how it turns out.

@dylan417 But that's normal. Everyone in Hollywood on Del Toro's level has a similar number of projects in development. The only difference is that Del Toro is completely open about his development slate to fans and the general public. You make it sound like it's a flaw of his, when in reality, it's simply the way things work and Del Toro is more transparent about it than just about anyone else.

Del Toro is a man of vision. I love video games that ar clearly made by peple of vision. With what little I know, I am pleased to hear this is continuing, honestly THQ isnt fit to sweep Del Toro's Kitchen IMO. Will be following more developments as they come and I am hoping the mystery Developer is a good group of foik.

Wouldn't Valve be everyone's "Dream developer"? I seriously doubt they'll have anything to do with this game.

@SythisTaru @ElfShotTheFood You're a fool. Never post again.

Half Life were the only good games they ever made? I guess you just don't like good games then.

@Thanatos2k @ElfShotTheFood Half-Life 1 and 2 (+ episodes) are the only games I like from them, and they are great...but Valve also doesn't seem to like making them and kinda just stopped development right in the middle of the story. (Without apologizing the fans)
