Guitar Hero 5 Outsells Beatles

Last week saw the release of two heavyweight rhythm games, Guitar Hero 5 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Guitar Hero 5 was promoted on the strength of a brand-new party mode and the ability to play any combination of instruments, while The Beatles: Rock Band brought with it three-part harmonies and, well, the Beatles!

No Caption Provided
We're number one! Take that, Beatles!

With all the press hype last week around the Fab Four, including rave reviews, the release of the remastered Beatles catalogue, Beatles week on the BBC, and the Times dedicating an entire fortnight to them, many were expecting The Beatles: Rock Band to jump straight in at number one in the UK all-formats sales charts.

It turns out that the pulling power of the Beatles isn't as strong as the urge to watch Kurt Cobain rap, as the game debuted at number four, with Guitar Hero 5 going straight in at number one. Chart Track is reporting that this is the first Guitar Hero game to score a number one on the all-formats chart, with previous titles Guitar Hero III and World Tour managing to hit only the number-four spot. Though not managing to outsell its rhythm rival, The Beatles: Rock Band's entry at four marks the series' highest debut, with previous entries only reaching number six.

Last week's other heavyweight title, the critically acclaimed Dirt 2, jumped straight in at number two, again marking the series' highest position in the chart. The original Dirt only reached number three.

@sharpie_basic then you design the game, and try to come up with a bunch of new features each time they make a game. with rhythm games theres not really much you can do each game, Guitar Hero 1: One player, guitar and bass only, no real co-op options Guitar Hero 2: Guitar and bass only, Co-Op Added Guitar Hero 3: Guitar and Bass only, Co-Op, Online Competitive Guitar Hero: World Tour: Biggest Leap for the franchise. All instruments, Great online support, guitar/character/song creator, online bands. Guitar Hero 5: more accessible to everyone, (I.E any combo of band members, jump in and play) yup, exactly the same cept for music

check back in a week and see which does better. i would never buy neither one cause thats not the kind of games i play. but in true retrospect i would go for the beatles if i had to chose of course. i don't care for gh5 track list at all. the only tracks i ever liked were tool and there on world tour

its funnier to watch jonny cash rap :-p or sing death metal or do anything that isnt what he would do, he's just out of place (not tring to bash him, he was an amazing song writer and singer) but somehow i dont think he would like the beastie boys

Have seen a lot more Guitar Hero 5 adverts, also GH does have that name behind it as Rock Band in UK and Europe is kind of a sore subject with a lot of people thanks to EA deciding to gouge us with their initial pricing (which got slashed very very fast). Shame really as The Beatles Rock Band (and the Rock Band series in general) seems a much better game

I'm shocked by this because the Beatles rock band was a better game than Guitar Hero 5. Honestly all the music in GH 5 is terrible when compared to Beatles Rock Band. @hotfiree you sir are an idiot of the highest order. the Beatles are better than any band to come out in the past 20 years!

@ stupermike6 I'm considering the whole picture when i say variety = win. Consider the broad picture that most people would like a variety rather than a game concentrated on one band, even though the Beatles are/were an awesome band. For the record, I plan on picking up the RB Beatles game.

I agree the Beatles are awesome but they released this so close to the CD releases. The audience they were going for is gonna buy the CD before they get the game.

The Guitar Hero franchise started to suck after 2 in my opinion. Harmonix knows what they are doing. Plus the Beatles are awsome.

People forget that most gamer are still in there teens or twenties. Beatles aren't that popular with this age group. I mean there is plenty of people in that age group that likes the Beatles but from the looks of things not as many as GH fans. Personaly I have become totally disenhartened with the whole genre and going to buy other games I get more play time and fun out of. Although Beatles Rock Band looks the better game.

**to clarify with the world** UK were offered world tour as the freebie for buying GH5. Only the £69.99 guitar bundle had the 'limited edition' red guitar, only one store chain sold them (GAME) and every other uk/european website was screwed delivery-wise and now there is a surplus of overstock GH:WT. Guitars shipping with GH5....if you want the red guitar...YOU HAVE TO BUY BAND HERO! Europe got shafted....the end (kotick wasn't lying wanting GH customers to spend on average $500 on stuff, europe is fronting the bill)

Gamers are lemmings. They don't know squat about music and will buy blindly based soley on the franchise's name. And this proves it more than anything.

i think both games are bad because of a dumb set-list. I'm not saying the beatles are dumb i just like the really hard fast songs like TtFaF. Now all of the new rhythm games seem to be going for the more and more less skilled audience each year

I am surprised by this to be completely honest. I have played GH:5 but not the beatles yet but I am still shocked. I really do not know why GH:5 sold so well? I rented it and think the set list is very, very boring. I just couldn't get into it. IMO it's the worst set list yet. But I know that's my opinion but it just shocks me. The Beatles though, why I didn't buy that either is cuz it just doesn't seem like it would be challenging enough. Props to both companies but I'll pass on both these games this time around. Shocking, though. Real shocking...

And you can blame Paul McCartney and the $250 bundle for me not buying a copy of RB:Beatles and GH:WT's crappy gameplay for me buying neither. =) A shame too, Sweating Bullets in GH5 is one of my favorite songs...but I didn't enjoy a minute of GH:WT, and its vocals seemed pretty broken(Sweating Bullets being the one song I can sing), so...=/

It's probably because of Activision's desperate move of including Van Halen in the package. Apparently, they are really that desperate to sell Guitar Hero 5, except it's not really a big move on their part. I mean, this is basically how all of their band featured games work. Guitar Hero + Random band name and music + Lots of other bands and music with not enough relation = Tons of unearned sales. At least Harmonix made a way better effort on The Beatles: Rock Band.

Activision screams: "JUMP!" Fanboy's ask eagerly: "How high?" I really, really thought about this whole GH5 vs RB: Beatles situation. My equation was this: GH5= Quantity + friends. RB: The Beatles = Quality + Depth + The odd friend here and there. I've got other games that I can play multiplayer on. And I've already got GH: World Tour. So, quite frankly... I'm getting RB: The Beatles. ;-p

thats the difference between the mass marketing juggernaut of guitar hero against the more subtle rock band. id rather be playing the beatles game then watching kurt cobains image be completly sullied. I thought guitar hero was supposed to celebrate musicians, not make a complete farce of them.

Yes yes I know there are kids that like the Beatles but for every person here that says they like the beatles I can find 30 times as many kids that have never even heard of them. Kids are more familiar with Paramore than the Beatles thanks to Twilight. (Not that I dislike Paramore)

This is a no brainer. Beatles, while the better overall game in my opinion, has a very distinct target audience. You must like music/rhythm games and more specifically, The Beatles. How this even comes up as a news article is beyond me.

Is anyone surprised that GH5 outsold RB Beatles? I'm not, especially when I consider the song selection. Granted, I love the Beatles, but the music is more concentrated than GH5. Even if someone doesn't like the song list of GH5, they gotta admit that it has more variety. Variety = WIN
