Guitar Hero getting Greatest Hits, new DS game

Activision readying compilation of full-band versions of tracks from older Guitar Hero games; third offering on Nintendo's handheld by year's end.

To date, the biggest Guitar Hero game of 2009 has been Guitar Hero: Metallica, the first full-band installment in the series to be based on a single group. However, a subsequent installment in the series may very well contain tracks from Guitar Hero: Aerosmith--the first band-focused GH game--that use more than just a virtual six-stringer.

Next stop: Guitar Hero: Freedom Rock
Next stop: Guitar Hero: Freedom Rock

Speaking with analysts in a conference call today, Activision Publishing CEO and president Mike Griffith announced that the publisher will be releasing "a separate Greatest Hits compilation Guitar Hero game that includes full band versions [of previously released songs]." Though no specific titles were mentioned, the Greatest Hits will likely draw on all prior titles in the Guitar Hero series, which began with the eponymous 2005 original game for the PlayStation 2.

Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii before the end of 2009. The year will also see the release of a third Guitar Hero game for the DS, following last year's Guitar Hero: On Tour--the top third-party game for the platform--and its sequel Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades. Activision did not say if the new GH DS game's peripheral would use the GBA slot, which is not present in the forthcoming DSi model.

Greatest Hits and the new Guitar Hero DS game will also be joined by DJ Hero, which will arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii sometime in 2009.

I guess I'm somewhat excited but... the only reason I would buy this is for some of the songs from Guitar 1 & 2 and Rock the 80's. I really wish they'd make those for the Wii... I WANT TO PLAY SWEET CHILD O' MINE SOO BAD D'=

Not the biggest fan of Metallica, but there are enough good songs from them and other bands and the addition of Expert+ that I'll pick it up when it comes out (hopefully 50, but if it's 60 then meh). However, a Greatest Hits (even though I think it would be AWESOME to replay some of the old songs from previous games *cough*Freebird*cough*) is just a rip. It's what DLC is for and it's a big reason why RB is a far better game at this point. Redo them a handful at a time, put em out a week at a time, I'll buy them all up. Or...wait for a few weeks and I bet Harmonix will be all over it like they're already starting to do with quite a few songs from previous GH setlists showing up as DLC already. If they try to make people choose betwen dropping $60 bucks and switching between discs or spending 30, getting each song downloaded 5x, and mixing them all seamlessly into one game, GH is going to be lose that fight.

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits is a great idea, I thought... until I realized that's what DLC is for! Less than a year after World Tour released, and they want us to switch between three game discs?

This is fine, but just PLEASE LEAVE OUT the stupid emo garbage like Panic At The Disco and Fallout Boy. The world could do with less and less of that crap all the time.

Is that Freedom Rock, then TURN... IT... UP!!! Anyway, a Greatest Hits game is kindof a good idea, given the lack of backwards compatibility to play the first few games on PS3 now, and the complete lack of ability to play the first and "Rocks the 80s" on 360. I'd feel a lot better about it if they'd just offer them as downloadable packs, however, since this is the non-ripoff route.

Right now, I see the PS3 / 360 / Wii owners as the group deciding this fate, since those owners are the ones capable of accessing DLC. Though, with a little work, the DS and PS2 could join the DLC-using groups for these games. The USB ports on the PS2, with a jump drive, could be used to "access" DLC aquired over a PC, and the DS, through the Wii, can access DLC that way. Would be real neat if the DS got a "new" controller with a SD card slot built-in for "DLC storage"...
leon2365 Posted Feb 12, 2009 4:33 pm PT well i look forward to playing older songs with new graphics and complete band compatibility. as long as they put killer queen and killing in the name of, im happy. and maybe the return of jordan with better graphics as 2 c the HOPO better
better graphics? It looks sharp and all, but way too cartoony, i wouldn't hold my breath for the improved graphics since they have not changed much since the first one (and yes i have played ALL of them except GH:Aerosmith)

Can you say overkill? I understand the idea of making some of the older songs full-band compatible, but why cant they just do that with DLC? Its bad enough we're only getting one all-new game this year with the Metallica one (which will only really appeal to major fans of the band)...why cant we get a "World Tour 2" with another 80 new tracks or something? Just seems like theyre milking it here. At the very least, give us TWO band-devoted titles in a year. Im still waiting for Van Freakin Halen!

I like the idea of the GH greatest hits game, even though it is milking the hell out of the series. I don't have a PS2 or a 360 anymore, and it would be nice to be able to play some of my favorite songs from the first 2 GH games on systems I actually do own now. Having compatibility for the drums & vocals is an added bonus. I'd LIKE to see Activision eventually release the whole GH back catalog as DLC for the systems that support it, but I wouldn't hold my breath... As for the DS games... please god, make it stop.

Cool news :) It would be a good chance to see songs played in PS3 that previously were available only in PS2 (e.g. Rock the 80's). I suggest that the Greatest Hits should include some new songs as well  don't let it be just a compilation of all songs.

They milked Tony Hawk for all it was worth. Killed it. Now they are bleeding Guitar Hero dry. One more reason to stick with Rock Band. Follow the originators. They respect the property. Thanks Harmonix.

This just makes me want to cry now, seriously, if anymore unnecessary games hit the DS as filler titles and we move onto DJ Hero, I'll stop dead in my tracks and no longer buy anything else from Activision that has anything to do with Guitar Hero. Granted nobody forced me to begin with, but still, the bandwagon is growing too large and I see this as completely unacceptable on their part. Though if it's to beat Rock Band at the DLC, they're gonna have to try harder than this. I know it's a money game, but the game can be paused, pun intended, and take a break from the franchise, with the exception of the DLC of course and move onto bigger and better projects.

I don't see a reason for a greatest hits release (except for milking its franchise and robbing peoples wallets), it would be much better if they released the tracks as dlc.

I'm excited for the greatest hits for guitar hero. It would be even better if they do a rock band and allow you to mix it with the World Tour disc and let us enjoy all the music without having to switch discs.

What kills me is the fact that Activision touts the number of titles they have, and the number of SKU's they've sold like they're going out of style. I can't imagine what you would be thinking right now if you've spent a lot of money on Guitar Hero:WT DLC, because the few songs I bought for Guitar Hero III (at $3.75 a pop) was the worst money I ever spent.

Will these be the asters or the HMX covers? And if they are masters why does Rock Band still have no Queen? It's hard sticking to one side because I have no money. I chose Rock Band because they seemed like the most likely to get the band. Oh well, I'm good at waiting...

Let's hope they release original artist , master track versions from GH 1, 2, and 3. Many of the best songs are on these discs (Free Bird!), but unfortunately were released before the series was big enough to demand (and get) master tracks (or, in some cases, having the original bands re-record their songs just for the game, though this obviously can't happen with Free Bird, since both the lead singer and lead guitarist are dead).

To metal_militia89, I have to agree with you on the DLC. RB has much better post-release/DLC support. I love both the Guitar Hero: WT and RB/RB2 games but the music variety is much better for Harmonix' games.

I agree militia. I would even buy the disc if I could download the songs off it and play them on World Tour. Changing games completely just for new songs is ludicrous. Please, Activision, wake up. Nobody is going to buy another Guitar Hero game with the economy like it is. Use DLC! I want to play the REAL Sweet Child O' Mine in World Tour! And I REALLY want to play Trogdor again! Alas, Activision seems to think making brand new games is better than DLC.

Instead of making a single disk with all of the songs, why not put the best song from Guitar Hero 1,2 and 3 available for download, with the drums, vocals and bass included. Damn you Activision for having such a crappy release system. Rock Band and Harmonix are killing it on the DLC, releasing so many songs and offering so much content for a few bucks.

To CasinoOutlaw247, maybe you should give the games a try. They are a blast and the perfect party game. Like you, I used to be very skeptical about these games. However I decided early last year to get my kids GH3 used with a couple of used guitars for really cheap. The kids were having so much fun that I decided to give it a try and, lo and behold, I was soon hooked. I later got GH4 and RB2 and now the whole family can play/sing along and it is a lot of fun. We have hosted many parties, most of which end up playing these games and everyone has a great time. You really have to try the game out before you can make a judgement about it. And yes I play a real guitar as well as other instruments so don't try to throw that argument at me. Just wanted to say that you might want to give it a try. You may be surprised at how fun it can be.

For the record I have never bought a Guitar Hero/Rockband game and seeing as how they come out with a new installment every week I never will. I really can't wait until this whole little niche of gaming goes away for good never to return. I love music yet I just have no interest in PLAYING the music as a video game. Or maybe I'm just too old-school for such nonsense....

Question should be if they are going to be masters or covers... Granted, we now know they prefer to (hopefully only) use masters, but there could be some bands that prefer not to give out their licenses. I recall the debacle with The Romantics and What I Like About You... I think that might be one song we can count out. Heh.

You know, watching this unfold, I see the potential for much hand-wringing going on very soon. Notice, GH issues every track they make on disk, and shys away from DLC like it's the plague. The "RIAA preferred" method of distribution. RB, on the other hand, issues just enough disks to keep their software "updated", and/or ship new compliations to get people into the game, and issues most tracks via DLC, the "modern" way of doing it. So, if GH stays strong, the RIAA will keep chanting "albums are the way to go". If RB takes over and makes a killing on the DLC market, then hopefully the RIAA will see the error of their ways...

i like the idea of this, purely for the potential tracks which may get the full band treatment, ideally i would like it to include; freebird, shout at the devil, i wanna be sedated, the seeker, paint it black, welcome to the jungle, cherry pie, talk dirty to me, i ran, bathroom wall, sharp dressed man and more. it's a shame it couldn't be as dlc as this would be a cheaper way to get just the tracks you want, but still, as long as it's fun to play i'll be happy with it.

i will get greatest hits if it contains bark at the moon,Freebird,Who was in my room last night,Cowboys from hell,Six and Jordan.Possibly Fire it up aswell. Also aint got GHWT yet more happy the way Harmonix does buisness as it seems to not shove a new game down your throat all the time.I mean my RB1 setlist contains at least 2 GH2's worth of songs...and much better since its far more tailored to my music taste.
